Gatsby ends up getting humbled in the end when he asks Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him and Daisy can not do so. Daisy loved Gatsby, but she also did love Tom and her memories with him still mattered to her. Tom offered Daisy stability and reassurance. Daisy did not think Gatsby had enough to satisfy her back then and she continues to have this same feeling now. Gatsby is hurt by this but he does not give up on his love for her until finally she gives up on it for the both of them.

During the 1920’s, many people were power-hungry. They all wanted to be at the top and be the richest of the rich and be able to buy whatever they want. The 1920’s was a time where people were able to go from rags to riches, industries were growing and making money, and it was also the era of the Prohibition, a law that banned alcohol. “The Great Gatsby” was able to reflect on noticeable and non-noticeable aspects of the 1920’s. It reflects on the postwar disillusionment, the rise of the nouveau riche, and how business became the new religion for the United States.

In the novel “The Great Gatsby”, F. Scott Fitzgerald creates a mysterious character that catches the attention of all his readers. The bootlegger? The WW1 hero? Second cousin to the devil? Jay Gatsby.

Gatsby’s dreams and aspirations in life are rather interesting and amazing as he goes about his life in the book. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald helps highlight the social, moral, and political issue that were very present during the 1920’s and today. Gatsby is the focus of the book as before the book began, he was an ex-soldier who came to wealth by some rather illegal ways. Daisy a married woman is his person of interest, who was his ex-lover 5 years before the book started. Gatsby’s actions, and words demonstrate a clear obsession with Daisy that seems to have no end.

However, in chapter 7, during the confrontation, Daisy quickly rethinks her decisions and states, ‘I did love him once – but I loved you too’. As Gatsby hopes and expectations of them being together breaks the audience starts to comprehend that Daisy contradicting statements is purely because she is afraid to leave Tom. Tom came from a wealthy family and was highly respected in society. Daisy knew that life with him would be luxiourous and entirely satisfactory in terms of respect and wealth. In addition, the author is trying to convey to the audience that Daisy is too secure in her marriage with Tom to even consider leaving it.

Daisy then goes on to say “‘Even alone I can’t say I never loved Tom’... ‘It wouldn’t be true’” (Fitzgerald 133). Gatsby is so wrapped up with the made-up scenario in his head, he honestly believes that Daisy never loved her own husband. His own mind is playing tricks on him, and it’s making him go

Chapter 1 Things were monotonous in my early life. On the 20th March 1890, I was born to Henry C. Gatz and his wife in rural North Dakota. This was the same place that I spent the first 16 poverty-stricken years of my life. I can’t remember the exact details of my family life, as I have long since forgotten my parents, but I will never be able to forget my lifestyle on that farm.

Furthermore, Gatsby does all the things for Daisy in order to compete against Tom and his “old world” wealth. When Gatsby revealed to Tom,” She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart, she never loved anyone except me” (Fitzgerald 130). The truth to Tom about Gatsby and Daisy's intentions revealed what she thought in her heart.

In the climax Gatsby and Tom argues over who Daisy truly loves and who she will end up with as both characters regret the way she’s been treated and ultimately ruin Daisy and Gatsby relationship. Gatsby states in this harsh argument, “Daisy is leaving you,” (133). This expresses how hostile the usually calm and proper Gatsby can be due to how much he regrets having already lost Daisy once. Daisy then tells Gatsby with obvious reluctance, “I never loved him,” (132). She tells this as she is forced and almost scared of Gatsby.

The Great Gatsby Literary Analysis “They were careless people…” says Nick Carraway, the narrator of The Great Gatsby. In a story depicting the 1920s during a time of prosperity, growth, and the emergence of the America as a major global power, this statement may seem to be contrary. But in reality, Nick Carraway’s description of his friends and the people he knew, was not only true, but is an indication of those who were striving for the American dream. F. Scott Fitzgerald suggests that the American Dream is foolish, the people who pursue it are immoral and reckless, and this pursuit is futile. First, F. Scott Fitzgerald proposes that the American dream is foolish.

Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, the American Dream is depicted as a mirage due to its ultimate lack of fulfillment, outsider’s inability to obtain it, and the corruption it causes. A. Those who have achieved their idea of the American Dream are ultimately unfulfilled emotionally even though they possess tremendous wealth. B. The American Dream is a mirage, and thus unattainable as it limits success of an individual by their class and ethnic origin. C. Not only is the American Dream exclusive and unfulfilling, but it also causes corruption as those who strive for the American Dream corrupt themselves in doing so and the old rich hide behind their wealth in order to conceal their immoralities.

Jay 's Obsession in The Great Gatsby There is a fine line between love and lust. If love is only a will to possess, it is not love. To love someone is to hold them dear to one 's heart. In The Great Gatsby, the characters, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan are said to be in love, but in reality, this seems to be a misconception.

They both love Daisy in their own way and do not want to lose her. Gatsby states, “Both of us loved each other all that time” (Fitzgerald 138). Gatsby wants Daisy to tell Tom she never loved him so that they can be together, but she cannot because it would not be true. Daisy says to Gatsby, “I did love him once-but I loved you too”(Fitzgerald 140). Daisy used to love both of them but chooses Tom because she is used to life with Tom and does not change.

I believe the first time I read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was when I was in high school. The novel was never assigned or studied in any of my English classes and so, out of sheer curiosity because I knew it was considered a literary masterpiece, I decided to read it for my own pleasure. The only information I had about Gatsby was that it was set during the 1920s and that it was an American classic.
