The “killings” by Andre Dubus is a shocking story about a killer named Richard who murders frank the man having an affair with his wife, who is his pride and joy. Riveted with murder and passion the author revels the characteristics of Richard Strout’s in the “killings” as a psychological obsessive and controlling person; these traits effect his emotions and behaviors throughout the story. Richards’s anger which evolves throughout the story, is what leads to his obsessive and controlling behaviors. “The Shawl” and “The Years of My Birth” by Louise Erdrich One similarity between the two stories is the theme of abandonment of a child by its mother and a difference is that one ends on a very sad note and the other on a hopeful note. The ending of “The Shawl” is tragic and the ending of “The Years of My Birth” is hopeful as Linda has created a life for herself and moved beyond the tragedy of her earlier years. Other themes similar in both are twins and mothers are self-centered and care more about themselves than their child.

Doe Zantamata, an American author, once said, “Good friends help you find the most important things when you have lost them... your smile, your hope, and your courage.” In Frank Darabont’s film The Shawshank Redemption, hope and friendship are a large part of the characters’ lives, as they are inmates in the Shawshank prison. Andy is a newcomer and intrigues Red, an inmate who has been in the prison for a long time. Although Red is not sure what to think of him at first, they soon become good friends.

The three short stories I am going to compare and contrast are by Raymond Carver; they are Cathedral, Little Things, and Why Don’t You Dance. In these stories Raymond Carver uses several literary elements to bring the works to life. The elements I am going to discuss are setting, tone, theme, plot, and point of view. The first element I am going to discuss is the setting. In each of Carver’s short stories he produces a setting which is consistent to each subjective story.

For example, the opening first story explains her desire to eat American food instead of Indian food. She describes how the children at school have tuna salad sandwiches her mother doesn’t know how to make it nor does she really care for the food. For hundreds of years, people have used art as a way of portraying strong emotions such as passion, lust and joy. One of the more powerful of these emotions is that of loss, which is often portrayed as a overwhelming and devastating feeling. Various forms of art have different ways of conveying emotions, whether it be through the use of melody in music, with colors in paintings or through the thoughts and actions of characters in literature. In “The most dangerous game” written by, Richard Connell, he uses many devices such as: characterization, plot structure and theme to contribute to the overall meaning of the story. Characterization is a big part of the overall meaning of the story which is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to their environment. The protagonist Rainsford is at a constant battle with the antagonist General Zaroff. Throughout the entire short story they both have similar minds sets and then farther along the main character 's mind set develops into something more. The reader can almost sense a self centeredness, and that he believes that there are only two type of people in this world, “the hunters and the huntees”, and he believes that he is the hunter.

There is a combination of colour and black and white images which feature rapidly throughout the film (Hersey, 2002). The colour images which represent a perfectly normal and happier environment rapidly move to black and white, which is usually associated to threating events, highlighting the bleakness of the expected outcome of the scene (lburgess3, 2013 and Natural Born Killers, 1994). There is animalistic reference with the rattle snake symbolising poison and death and the wolf symbolising the hunt for prey, both symbolising the outcomes of the subjects within the scene. There is also a man holding a newspaper with the headline “666 Death” before he dissolves away from the scene and for most of the scene being black and white because of the murders that are committed by Mickey and Mallory. The end of the scene is in colour with the pair celebrating their victory in dance and a projector displaying fireworks in the background
