Have you ever heard the phrase “In order to succeed, you must never give up”? In the powerful poem, Beowulf, this was the constant variable that occurred in every battle that had taken place. His dedication and lack to give up, compassion for others, and his trust in his men were the key components that later led him to his Heroic name. As in the quote “he knew too well that here was the last of life, an end of his days on earth“ (12) proves that no matter what the risk, he was always willing to sacrifice himself in order to save the lives of others.
Throughout this poem Beowulf showed time and time again, just how much dedication he had throughout his success. From the start of his very first battle against the Grendel, he had in his mind that one day he

One more heroic characteristic Beowulf showed was the trust in his men. With every battle that
Beowulf was involved in, he was never to leave his warriors behind. During the battle against the
Grendel he purposely picked out fourteen of his strongest warriors and fought alongside sixteen of the
Danish warriors making that thirty warriors Beowulf had to confide and trust in through it all. Even though more than half of the warriors were not his own people, he treated them the exact same. He trusted in that they would be successful in the fight and follow the orders exactly as is without question.
In this quote “’Tis time that I fare from you. Father Almighty in grace and mercy guard you well, safe in your seekings. Seaward I go, ’gainst hostile warriors hold my watch” (4) Beowulf explained to Hrothgar that him and his men would do all that they could to keep them safe from the monster. The last battle before his death was against the dragon. He originally took with him one warrior, Wiglaf a
Beowulf was not the only one who showed bravery. Wiglaf did as well and he ultimately saved and helped Beowulf slay the dragons while all the other danes left him and ran away like cowards. . All the outcast sought vengeance and ended up being destroyed by the infamous
Beowulf, the epic tale of a Danish society plagued by evil beasts, reveals many thought-provoking and admirable character traits of the main character and hero, Beowulf. Firstly, he shows chivalry through his interactions and actions towards the king of Heorot, showing him the respect and honor he deserved. Secondly, he demonstrates bravery in all battles above and beyond the standard of the times and the standard of his fellow fighters. He owes his bravery in part to his seemingly immeasurable strength, having more power in each fist than that of thirty men. Lastly, he demonstrates a trait that applies to people for his time and ours, pride.
Personal loss is a pervasive element throughout the epic poem Beowulf, serving as a poignant reminder of the transitory nature of life. The poet writes, “I risked my life often when I was young. Now I am old, but as king of the people I shall pursue this fight for the glory of winning.” (Beowulf 18.250-21). Beowulf's use of repetition with the phrase “I risked my life” emphasizes the extent to which he was willing to put himself in danger for the sake of his people, even from a young age.
The story Beowulf contains many different rulers that people follow. Among the various characteristics these men share, a few great qualities shine through, these being generosity, loyalty, and bravery. The leader Beowulf portrays these qualities multiple times throughout the story, which define him as a model of leadership for all times. One of the reasons is that Beowulf always acts decisively and courageously to combat evil, and he is also noble in his actions. He knows how to create peace as well as to wage war.
Beowulf also shows loyalty by the statement, “Beowulf ruled in Geatland/ Took the throne he’d refused,once/ And held it long and well” (Beowulf 451-53). This resembled loyalty toward Beowulf because it shows how he stayed true to his word and can be trusted. The last characteristic Beowulf showed as an Anglo-Saxon hero was friendship. Beowulf resembled an enormous amount of friendship throughout the novel Beowulf.
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
Beowulf attempted to comfort Hrothgar and the warriors by exclaiming, “Let your sorrow end! It is better for us all to avenge our friends, not mourn them forever”. He then aims to convince Hrothgar that “for the glory of his name, fame after death is the noblest of goals”. Beowulf believes it is worth dying for a good
Beowulf possessed the poised demeanor necessary to defeat all evils by the arrogant swing of his sword. The commitment shown by lending his life to the welfare of his people was imperative in order to be called a flawless warrior. Beowulf embodied the determination that Anglo-Saxons saw as unmeasurably valuable. If nothing more than just fiction, Beowulf is the ideal hero of the people from who he originated. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.”
Beowulf is a historical poem that was made in the 8th century. Beowulf has taught many people in the world that we should always fight and succeed when it comes to our obstacles. Beowulf is a story that is mostly fighting the people that Beowulf fights for is his king and allies after all he is a strong warrior.he fights lot in the story and someone he fight is grendel a evil monster he fights and dies as a loyal soldier. Beowulf is a wonderful book that poems admiration and loyalty in every way possible. Beowulf was a strong warrior to show how he was i have this quote directly said by beowulf himself”If death does take me send the hammered mail to Higlac and return the inheritance i had from hrethel l and he from wayland fate will unwind
Beowulf embodies many universal societal heroic values that are signified in the modern world like courage, bravery, and strength. In the poem, Beowulf displays courage. “Now, I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat” (Heaney 425-426). This quote shows courage because he’s telling them that he can fight Grendel and wants to weather he wins or loses.
Beowulf’s bravery became an example for all of the warriors who would follow after him in Herot and even in other lands as his story spread all
As a result of Beowulf keeping his intentions in mind, scholars consider him as a strong role model. Scholars depict him as “the very model of the warrior hero” (Loughman). Due to his leadership skills and his confidence, Beowulf’s men easily follow him into the battle . (Loughman). Therefore, he knows that they will achieve the goal they need to.
They put their life on the line for the citizens of the United States of America. The final characteristic of a great hero is loyalty. Loyalty is staying true to what you say or say you will do. Beowulf was loyal to the Danes and Geats, when he said he will fight off the enemies he stuck to his word.
Forever and ever; your courage has earned it,/ And your strength” (953-956). Beowulf’s life had been remolded by his victory, building a story beyond his
Beowulf manifests the features of a literary epic by reflecting the Anglo-Saxon warrior culture from which it came from, and containing great, descriptive language and plots that include great battles and conflicts. The warrior culture is evident from the explanation of the story in Journeys where Beowulf, along with his group of warriors, sails to Denmark, ready to defeat Grendel to the very end of the excerpt where defeating Grendel brings Beowulf honor, pride, and glory. “He was happy with his / nightwork / and the courage he had shown” (826-828). Great battle and conflict, as well as descriptive detail, can be seen in this line from Beowulf and Grendel’s battle, “Every bone in his body [Grendel’s] / quailed and recoiled, but he could not
