Joseph Campbell was an American mythologist and philosopher. He wrote works such as “The Hero With a Thousand Faces”, “The Hero’s Journey”, and “The Power of the Myth”. Also, because this is interesting, he was one of the fastest half mile runners in the world at one point (The Hero's Journey Summary.). Campbell focused on comparative mythology which is when you compare mythology from different cultures and find common themes and ideas (Joseph Campbell Foundation). Joseph created a monomyth that summarized a hero’s journey, it contained seventeen stages (INTRODUCTIONS). These seventeen stages can be simplified to nine stages, which are birth, departure, crossing the threshold, special weapon, mentor/help, proving themselves, facing death/lowest …show more content…
Now on the note of Beowulf’s special weapon, it would probably have to be the one he found in Grendel’s mother’s cave. In his fight with Grendel’s mother, Beowulf “...saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons But so massive that no ordinary man could lift Its carved and decorated length.” (Raffel) Beowulf used many swords, but this sword that could only be wielded by Beowulf is the most iconic of those swords (Beowulf). The next stage of the journey is the mentor. Not all heroes fit perfectly into every step, like Beowulf doesn’t fit because he did not have a mentor. Even though he doesn’t fit here he still fits very close to the monomyth. He fits into the next stage of proving himself. In his fight with Grendel “Beowulf fights him unarmed, proving himself stronger than the demon, who is terrified. As Grendel struggles to escape, Beowulf tears the monster’s arm off.” (Beowulf) No warrior had been able to hurt Grendel before Beowulf, proving his abilities to the Danes. Years, later after fighting Grendel and his mother, Beowulf is brought to his lowest point. This is when he fights a dragon that had terrorised the Geats. During the battle “None of his comrades Came …show more content…
His birth was significant because his dad is none other than Darth Vader, though Luke doesn’t find out till later (Davis). Luke departs from Tatooine, his home planet, with Han Solo after Luke find a distress signal from Princess Leia in her R2-D2 (Davis)(Star). Luke crosses the threshold when his aunt and uncle are killed by stormtroopers and he leaves to become a Jedi (Davis). His special weapon is the lightsaber that his father used till he was turned to the dark side (Davis). Obi-Wan was Luke’s first mentor teaching him the basics of the force. Then after he is killed by Darth Vader, Yoda becomes his new master guiding Luke on the more spiritual side of the force (Star). Even though Obi-Wan was killed, he still guides Luke from the spirit world (Davis). Luke proves himself on and off the battlefield. He has near death fights with Darth Vader and helps the Rebellion in more large scale fights. Also the original Death Star is destroyed by Luke. He proved himself as a person as he matured due to his Jedi training (Star). The lowest point for Luke is when he faces Darth Vader in Cloud City and he gets his right hand cut off. This is his lowest point as a Jedi and for his quest to save his father from the dark side (Davis). Finally on his final ordeal he faces Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. When Luke is being hit with Palpatine’s force

An infamously lifelong agnostic, he discovered something. The man looked into the sky that morning. He watched the enchanting metamorphosis of the plethora of colors. It started with a dark navy blue. The first rays of rosy-cheeked Dawn combined with it to create a splendid magenta and then went into a phase of marigold.
Luke's ability to motivate and move others is astounding. His carefree and positive attitude become his main personality traits, and he doesn’t seem as hopeless as he was in the beginning of the

Heroes need weapons to defeat their enemies, and it is no different for the hero Beowulf in the epic poem Beowulf. Beowulf uses all sorts of weapons throughout his many battles with monsters. Each weapon that he uses there is attached a cultural significance. There is a cultural significance attached to each weapon that he uses, ultimately aiding him in his survival and his killing of the beats. As he grows older, he needs to wear more armor and fight with stronger weapons to be able to kill his enemies.
Mrs. Rosine, the next day was carnival night where you got to wear normal clothes since we had to wear uniforms every day and all of camp counselors said that it was really extravagant. I will tell you all about it. That night I dressed in my normal cotton tee-shirt and shorts. Olivia was still getting ready in the cabin while I was waiting for her outside. “Are you ready yet?”
Within the epic poem Beowulf, there are three main battles that each have a great influence on the story. In the poem, the three main battles are where Beowulf, the protagonist, fights Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. In each fight, Beowulf must use his inhuman abilities to take on each opponent. However, even though Beowulf has these special abilities, that does not mean he automatically wins each battle just from pure strength. Beowulf also uses his past experiences to prepare him for these three encounters, but only stories are told of those battles, as Beowulf uses his tales to impress King Hrothgar, who was having an uncanny amount of trouble trying to defeat Grendel, who kept attacking his men.
Fighter of dragons and other magical creatures alike, the story of Beowulf is often, at times, considered to not be an epic by some people. However, there are those who believe that the story is in fact an epic. A story including Prelude and forty-one chapters, the story does follow all of the characteristics of an epic. Beowulf focuses mainly on the exploits of a hero, takes place in a vast setting, and contains superhuman feats including strength and military prowess. Most epics have focused on the exploits of a hero or, a demi-god.
Joseph Campbell’s theories about “The Hero’s Journey” can be seen in many pieces of literature including mythological and superhero stories, such as in the movie Spider Man (2002) and in the book Theseus by Plutarch. Spider Man, a well-known and loved modern hero, follows almost every step of the “hero’s journey” exactly how Campbell intended for them to. The Ancient Western hero, Theseus, is also another great hero that follows Campbell’s steps closely. Spider Man, Theseus, and Campbell’s steps share many similarities, such as the “Call to Adventure,” “Crossing the Threshold,” and the “Road of Trials.” Theseus and Spider Man, in my opinion, are two exemplary models of heroes that most accurately represent Joseph Campbell’s steps of “The Hero’s
You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself,’ i lived through this horror. More often than not, heros can be people who aren’t depicted as supernatural humans, with various powers. The more common heros are those with the trait of bravery, alongside various other traits. In “A Worn Path”, a grandmother by the name of Phoenix Jackson goes on a quest to obtain medicine for her sick grandson. The following traits from Joseph Campbell’s hero chart are what defines Phoenix Jackson as a hero. One of the common things that often shows during the beginning of the story of a hero, is the mystery of where they came from or what the current time is.
OVERARCHING THEMES Though The Odyssey and Paradise Lost are penned during completely separate time periods–with a span of roughly nine centuries between the writing of each–the two works still share many similar themes and subject matters. Some are more vital components for the genre in general, necessary for a piece of literature to be considered an epic; others remain less conspicuous, though with just as great an impact on the overall story. Heroism and the Hero’s Journey: One of the most defining elements of an epic work is the presence of the Hero’s Journey, also known as the monomyth. Introduced by Joseph Campbell, the Hero’s Journey describes the typical narrative pattern that accompanies many forms of storytelling, most commonly and most easily seen in classical literature.
Joseph Campbell is the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a novel which outlined the idea of the hero’s journey. His novel identified the common patterns that were found in most myths, fables and spiritual traditions. Campbell expanded on this knowledge by creating a detailed framework that identified the twelve stages of the hero’s journey. His guidelines provided an accurate description of the hero’s journey, as proven in many popular stories and it is clearly presented in the South African movie Tsotsi. Tsotsi is the story of a young gangster who hailed from the slums of South Africa.
