The History Of Slavery: The American Civil War

Slavery, political tension, disagreements between the north and south and the split opinions about Abraham Lincoln were components that contributed to the start of the American Civil War. These factors were the catalyst in the beginning of the Civil War. 

Slavery was the most influential factor that contributed to the beginning of the Civil War. The North’s support to abolish slavery in all American states was viewed as a violation of constitutional rights by the South, thus creating an extreme hatred between the two sides, and ultimately beginning the Civil War. The south, or “the great cotton empire”, was dependant on slavery to keep the large cotton plantations in business.

My group’s assigned task was; Explore how people view issues related to the Civil War from different perspectives, focusing on the roles of various groups and individuals from Virginia that influenced the outcome We were also given a guiding question to drive our work forward; When was the impact of slavery on Virginia as well as the nation? To answer our question we used a book called Our Virginia past and present, and a website called Civil War Trust.org. We conducted lots of research and created two visalus, a timeline that includes major events from before, during, and after the civil war and a map showing the Union, border, and Confederate states. After we decided that we had enough research we ultimately decided on a claim. Slavery, as many people know, was the cause of an ongoing dispute during the early-mid 1800s that caused several things like states seceding, rebellions, and even the Civil War. Slavery had a huge effect on politics and several debates, decisions, acts, and compromises had to be formed in order to keep the people in check. In the North and West, most people were anti-slavery while most people in the South were pro-slavery. These two regions were way more different than they were similar not only in the issue of slavery, but also in their economies which helped further the sectional disputes. When the Civil War began, President Lincoln “insisted that slavery was irrelevant to the conflict.” (p. 520) “In the early days of the war… the Union had no intention of interfering with slavery.” (p. 520)

The main issue was slavery, but there were also other issues at that time. Trying to avoid being a one issue party, Republicans also were concerned with tariffs on foreign goods, the construction of the railroad, other internal improvements and a homestead act that would grant cheaper western lands to settlers. The slave issue was by far the largest issue though. This issue was debated for many years before the civil war. Compromises considering this issue were made and overturned for many years.

Slavery in The Civil War The American civil war from 1861 to 1865 divided many people in the United States, even turning brother against brother. There were also great amounts of bloodshed and was one of the bloodiest wars in the US and left a heritage of brief and bitterness. And the basis of this war, slavery, slavery is usually very cruel and has been around since early man. Their were two sides to this war, the North and the south.

Everyone knows what a slave is, its a person who is being held against their will and forced to do a task without payment or able to exercise their freedom. Back then in a America, before equal rights. Before the civil war, that at least gave the slaves the freedom to do as they please under the law. As we know from American history. Almost everyone, in the south and some supporters in the north believed that slavery was okay.

The Civil War was necessary to resolve the escalating tensions between Northerners and Southerners regarding slavery. To Southerners, slavery was essential to their agricultural economy and way of life. The North was industrialized and did not need slavery to support their economy. Since the regions had different views on slavery, compromises and fighting occurred to try to solve the issues which slavery brought up. Tensions over slavery began to grow when the country started expanding West because the North and the South wanted their personal beliefs to be spread West.

In addition, the historical neglect of slavery is used as a tool in for white supremacy. Through ignorance, Americans show a common theme of showing pride in their heritage of the Confederacy and fail to see the bigger picture of it. They buy and wear merchandise such as flags, shirts, hoodies, hats, etc… proudly, with the incomprehension of the damage it is doing. We have failed to properly display the Confederacy as the villain, or even to show that the preservation of slavery was the reason for the Confederacy to secede from the Union in the first place. Where slavery has mostly been condemned, the defenders in history have not been condemned but instead have their actions be viewed as a part of American history.

Freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. The foundation of America is freedom. Freedom from Britain. However, the freedom is limited to white males who own property. When colonists started to immigrate to America, they wanted to escape from under the rule of Britain.

In the 1800’s slavery was a lifestyle in the southern parts of America. White Americans saw African Americans as inferior beings to them, this was especially seen when they used their power to harshly and constantly abuse in order to keep them working. Slavery was more profitable in the south because of the ideal climate and large amount of land for farming, so having slaves farm and grow cash crops led southerners to become very rich. The Northern economy was more based on manufacturing, so they did not need slaves as much. As years progressed tensions began over keeping slavery in the United States and started the civil war.

In the 1800s, slavery was a prominent figure in the United States of America. . As no clear records of slaves were kept, estimates of their total numbers can not be based on a census, but are instead determined by the knowledge that slaves (originally brought to the New World in 1619) reproduced at a rapid rate. Additionally, the continued influx of slaves through the American Civil War caused the total number of enslaved Africans to grow.

Have you ever wondered how life was for the slaves in the South? Slaves in the South suffered through many consequences. For example, they suffered through many whippings with cow skin if they didn't obey their master, they also got separated from their family mostly the fathers, so, they can be sold to a very mean slave owner. Even if they were living a miserable life on the farms, they had their own culture and they managed to even get married in the farmland or where they worked. Not only did the slaves live on the farm.

The compromise of 1850 was the opening for the 1850’s, slavery was the main focus throughout. As the books explain the south was a heavy favorite for keeping slavey, and the North were the “heroes” they were the ones who wanted to abolish slavery and emancipate the slaves. Harriet beecher stowe is the lady who wrote the best selling anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom’s cabin, this novel was so controversial that Abraham Lincoln called her “the little lady who made this great war”. “ Politically, slavery was the biggest problem during the 1850’s and everything revolved around the issue of slavery. Socially slavery caused this rebellious controversy between the North and South.

The American Revolution brought independence to slaves, colonists, Native Americans, and women. The Revolutionary War made the United States and France allies go against Great Britain. France made a choice to assist the United States military until they received independence from Great Britain. The Revolution had a huge part in slavery, such as bringing conflict between slavery and liberty because the North prohibited slavery. The South did not believe that slavery should be abolished.
