Sonia Nazario’s piece, Enrique’s Journey, thoroughly depicts the hardships that come with modern day immigration and the issues that can stem from a single decision. In her book, Nazario writes that immigration “is a powerful stream...that can only be addressed at its source” (Nazario xxv). She uses the metaphor of a stream or river to illustrate the gradual escalation of complications that can arise from immigration and the choice of pursuing a greater future in the United States. The author presented detailed examination of illegal immigration and clarified most frequently misunderstood aspects of illegal immigration. For instance, the genuine reasons for Enrique’s journey melted the hearts of many motherly readers; it represented an expedition for love, unity and family. Enrique, a little boy scarred from the separation of his mother portrays the urgency of immigration reforms in the nation. Most people tend to label illegal immigrants as rapists, robbers and murders, but in fact, majority of them are innocent kids waiting to meet their mothers. American society was established by immigrants and yet people are ignorant towards immigrants in the nation; they say, immigrants bring crime, but people are blind to the domestic injustices caused by the citizens.

The purpose of the essay is so clearly seen throughout this woven piece of diction and tone that one can’t help but understand the reason behind the essay, “...taking pride in this unlikely ability to throw all of us together in a country that … is as different as a dozen countries, and still … call it by one name.” (Quindlen 16) The understanding of the purpose to uplift, unite, and inspire the American population is distinct even through the complex diction. While interpreters and translators can work in any field, they frequently come across a sea of doubts when deciding what word to use, therefore, building a glossary on specialized terms can make our jobs more convenient. Even though this is a time-consuming task, at the end this will pay off. As my area of interest is interpreting in immigration settings, I have chosen to build a glossary on immigration based on the book from the series Current Controversies Immigration, by Debra A. Miller, published by Cynthia Sanner. Although immigration rates have decreased over the years, there is still a huge communication barrier between LEP (Limited English Proficiency) people and immigration staff, thus demanding the need for interpreters and translators.

Socially speaking, immigrants may find themselves feeling excluded from a society with organizations and perceptions that generalize them as illegal aliens who disrupt and complicate social institutions, instead of being a contributing part of society. Immigrants may feel constantly fearful of the federal and state governments’ influence on the undocumented community, which leads to how divided politics has been on the issue. Immigration is deeply rooted in the American culture, yet it is still an issue that has the country divided. Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco, in their essay, “How Immigrants Became ‘Other’” explore the topic of immigration. They argue that Americans view many immigrants as criminals entering America with the hopes of stealing jobs and taking over, but that this viewpoint is not true. They claim that immigrants give up a lot to even have a chance to come into America and will take whatever they can get when they come. The Suarez-Orozco’s support their argument using authority figures to gain credibility as well as exemplification through immigrant stories.

Perspective plays a big role in the discussion of illegal immigrants that enter America daily. With American society becoming more and more prejudice in each decade since Martin Luther King had his “I Have a Dream” speech Blacks are not the only ones on the discrimination list. This problem has since began to come to a head under President Trump and his term. Unbeknownst to many who support the deportation of illegal immigrants wholeheartedly, immigrants add to the society just as much as people fear they’ve been taking.

This quote may be from the mid-20th century, but it keeps its significance with the everlasting controversy on immigration and immigration laws. However, this is not the only time that the United States has experienced immigration controversies.

Immigration activists decided to protest the stalling of President Obama's executive order, which would have given deportation relief to millions of undocumented immigrants. It's a peaceful protest that involves publicly fasting for nine days across the street from 5th U.S. Circuit Court in New Orleans. Protesters are intent on convincing the judges to make a decision as soon as possible, because as more time goes by without a ruling, the less likely it becomes that the case will ever make it to the Supreme Court. There are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S., and President Obama's plan would give deportation relief to almost 5 million of them, according to the International Business Times. Immigration has always been a major part of American history. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people travel to the United States in search of a better life. Of the 1.49 million immigrants who traveled to the United States in 2016, 150,400 immigrants were from Mexico. There have also been many people from Mexico who have immigrated illegally to America, with 5.6 million Mexican unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2015 and 2016. The large scale of immigration, both legal and illegal, has brought up issues such as national security and the U.S. economy.

In Central America there are high levels of violence, particularly, in regard to gangs who are specifically targeting women. Resulting in families fleeing to the United States through the southern border. In an attempt to stop illegal immigration the current administration has been placing migrants, when caught, in detention centers. This is done as a message to others to not come over, and also as a holding place until they can be sent back to their home country. This becomes more controversial because of who is being held in these centers.

The essays share the same central focus: immigration. Both authors describe the many benefits of immigration for America. “...we would have to conclude that our history and society would have been vastly different if they (immigrants) had stayed home”(Kennedy pg24). Our country has been monumentally impacted by the creations, choices, and brilliant ideas of immigrants.

Despite the multiple attempts at creating a well-rounded immigration reform the United States has failed to achieve the full capacity of the reform. The United States first failure at the reform was in 1986 when congress passed the “Immigration Reform and Control Act”. The purpose of this legislation was to amend, revise, and re-assess the status of unauthorized immigrants set forth in the Immigration and Nationality Act. The content of this bill is overwhelming and is divided into many sections such as control of unauthorized immigration, legalization and reform of legal immigration.
