The Importance Of Coffee And Sugar In Colonial America

In Colonial America, during the 1600’s and 1700’s, there were religious, political and geographical changes which resulted in democratic and undemocratic changes. Religion had a big impact on Colonial America. Maryland had to pass the Act of Toleration because too many people were not able to exercise their religion freely. (document 1) The act stated that nobody in Maryland who exercises their religion will be embarrassed and is free to do so willingly, however this act only applied to Christians.

The colonies also make crops and trade them with each other when they need things. The economic

England at the end of this all had more money coming in than out. The sugar plantations, owned by wealthy people, had to be built. And the building of the plantation cost a lot of money. They also needed supplies, which brought in even more money. England created laws that permitted more money to come in than out.

The first few years of the Carolina’s served the British in many helpful ways. The southern part of Carolina served as support for the British West Indies and soon slaves from sugar islands reached the shores of the colony. The introduction of rice to the colony started a major economic boom. Many people started to see how profitable the crop could be and a massive wave of planters and slaves came to the colony. Southern Carolina’s “heart” town was a merchant port called Charles Town, which later became known as Charleston.

In the New England colonies the soil grade was very poor and couldn’t be used to produce crops ( of much value) as the soil in the south. New England colonies turned to fishing, shipbuilding and whaling in efforts to save their economy The New England colonies manufactured and exported rum and other goods in exchange for African slaves from Africa. These slaves would come to America and work on the plantation fields in the south. About 10 million or more slaves were taken during the triangle trade and became apart of the southern ethnic count. The south also had European, Spanish and French.

Saint Domingue was one of the richest colonies of the Americas during the late eighteenth century. Its extravagance resulted from their large production of highly demanded coffee, cotton, and sugar, which heavily depended on strict slave regime. Slaves, many whom were African born, made up the vast majority of the population and suffered poor working and living conditions. The anger of slaves caused the Haitian Revolution, which would lead to Haiti freeing itself from its oppressor and becoming an independent republic in the Caribbean. The Haitian Revolution created a profound effect not only the former French colony, but also acted as a leader for reformation around the world.

Frey lays the book out by discussing the economical and geographical differences in America and the effects of this on racial segregation. The pre-Revolution south in America had a highly successful economical basis in slavery.

The manufacturers were faced with maintaining a high crop yield, but luckily the Caribbean islands provided an ideal location for growing cane sugar. Once plantations were constructed yet another issue confronted the owners, cheap labor. For the plantations to produce large enough quantities of sugar to fulfill the demand, many slaves were necessary; thus, a successful slave industry arose with the aid of these wealthy entrepreneurs who hoped to own successful plantations. The absentee owners in England, Spain, and France became increasingly wealthy as the demand and industry for sugar

With slaves came the opportunity to work. With more hands that were not paid plantation owners only had more to gain as this went on through several states. Several slaves were sent in abundance to the West Indies to speed up the process of collecting sugar cane. This was extremely hard work for the slaves and only pushed the separation bar further apart. Along with Native Americans and slave women had no say over what went on in their lives a majority of the time.

Millions of years ago, the Earth was divided into two the Old and New Worlds. This lasted for quite some time, so long that different evolutions began. For example, on one side of the Atlantic rattlesnakes developed, but on the other, vipers grew. The Columbian Exchange was the exchange of non-native plants, animals, and diseases brought to the Americas from Europe and vice versa. This all happened after 1492.

It has fertile soil for growing crops.  They have long growing seasons.   They get lots of rain.  

The most common slavery was for sugar cane production and the cocoa bean production (which is used to make chocolate). Sugar cane was the most common because sugar was becoming one of the most widely used commodities. In the assembly when slavery was being abolished they recorded the events which occurred, “Camboulas: Since 1789, a great transformation remained incomplete; the nobilities of the sword and the Church were eliminated, but an aristocracy of the skin still ruled; it has just breathed its last. Equality is established; a black man, a yellow man, and a white man will sit among you representing the free citizens of Saint-Domingue. (The deputies applaud).”

Life in the colonies would be hard but, some people had it easy. There was rich and poor and people in the middle. There were also many things to do and be. Some aspects in life are down below and there are many more like African Americans, leisure, and cities. So there are many aspects of life in the colonies and some people had it easy and some didn’t.

Unresolved was the issue of changes the “noirs,” the slaves, and for women, who were very much instrumental in the Revolution. As with the issue of slavery in the United States, these issues were dealt with subsequently and, as with the United States, not without bloodshed. The American Civil War led to the emancipation of blacks and the slave revolt in St. Domingue (now independent Haiti) was instrumental in France. The high demand of tea in England in the 17th century and business restrictions imposed by China, which was the main source of tea then forced business people to engage in a long business chain to survive in the business. China required tea to be bought using silver. For foreign business people to get silver, they had to sell an item in China and get paid using Silver. England business people involved in the tea business engaged in opium business to ensure they got silver. They would buy opium in India, transport and sell it in China to obtain Silver, buy tea using the Silver, and transport to sell it to England.
