Justice is everything “The dead cannot cry out for justice. It is a duty of the living to do so for them.”- Lois McMaster Bujold. Many people Have died unjustly and their killer or reason of death was not found to give their death justice. Justice is something not everyone gets, in “To Kill a Mockingbird” there are people who are not treated fairly. Even in the real world there are many people who do not get the justice they deserve and there should be more people who do the right thing to help them get justice. In 2015 there were 149 people who were cleared for crimes they did not commit. Some of those people were on death row they could have died for something that they did not do. There are people who give false confessions or plea guilty …show more content…
He went to jail for the rape and murder of two little girls. Levon was a very nice man and continued to be that way even in jail. He was told not to long before he was put in jail that he was going to have a daughter and had a job that he was happy doing. He ended up staying in jail for eighteen years missing out on a lot of his life. After he was released he opened a restaurant with his wife and later died of cancer. If he would not have been convicted for this crime you could have lived out more of his life doing things that he loved before he died instead he was forced to spend it in jail. ¬¬¬¬¬¬(Levon Brooks, a Mississippi man wrongly convicted by bad forensics, dies at 58) Tom Robinson an Africa American man in “To Kill a Mockingbird” was accused of raping a Caucasian girl. During the time that the book was set in interracial couples were not allowed. This was when black people still worked for white people doing all their outdoor work and cleaning. Tom is taken to court where instead of judging by fact and evidence the judge goes against him because of his color. “the jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells’.” (117 Harper Lee To Kill A Mockingbird) Everybody believes that because Tom has a darker skin color he is guilty and a …show more content…
Atticus Finch took on Tom’s case only because he thinks it’s the one that will change his life personally. “every lawyer has at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I. guess.” (101 Harper Lee To Kill A Mockingbird) Atticus tries to make the court believe that Tom is innocent but has very strong doubts about it and has very little hope. There was no way to convince the court that a black male was innocent against a white family at the time. Even though there was no evidence proving that Tom raped the girl and there was evidence to prove that he didn’t like the fact that the girl was beat with someone’s left while Toms left hand was messed up he was still found guilty of the
Atticus Finch was assigned Tom Robinson’s case because he was the only one that Tom had a chance of getting his life back and getting back to his family. Atticus’s daughter, Scout Finch may have saved Atticus's life and even Tom’s life at the jailhouse. Atticus was at the jailhouse to make sure his defendant wouldn’t be murdered but still gave up after Tom was found guilty at the courthouse the next day when Atticus knew Tom’s case could have been easily appealed. Atticus should have brought more people and fought harder to keep his client from not being found guilty. Atticus accepted being Tom’s lawyer so Tom can be found innocent and he knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but he still gave up when he could have done something when he heard the word guilty come out of John Taylor’s
Under our justice system, all citizens are treated fairly in our courts of law. This statement is completely false. Black people, hispanic people, they don 't have the same chances, the same opportunities as white people. Even nowadays, if a hispanic person is convicted of a crime, then the news shows horrible pictures of them, shows them dressed like gangsters, makes them look intimidating, and even though that’s “just the media” it’s stereotypical, and racist. If in the Trayvon Martin Case, they had showed pictures of Trayvon that were current, the public would’ve thought a lot different, he wasn’t a cute little 14 year old.
Justice is an idea used by people, with varying opinions, on what they deem right from wrong. Throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird we can see people’s very different opinions of what they think is just. However, the very idea of Justice in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is expressed in the opinions of Atticus, the outcome of the Tom Robinson trial, and the death of Bob Ewell. First of all, in To Kill a Mockingbird the opinions of Atticus are seen as the most fair, and are the unwritten laws of the land in the book that people must follow, or they will eventually be punished. One of his most important opinions is that people or animals that only put positive energy and generally benefit the world should never be harmed in any way.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus uses all of the resources and knowledge available to him to help his cause, which was proving Tom Robinson innocent of a crime he did not commit, even though he was an African American. After Atticus presents his case to the jury, they have time to discuss the final verdict, “Judge Taylor was polling the jury: ‘Guilty . . . guilty . . . guilty . . . guilty . . .’”
In the book Atticus and the members of the court system express the reach of prejudice, justice, and fairness in the justice system. The justice system was filled with prejudice. In the book it states, “ Now don 't you be so confident, Mr. Jem I ain 't ever seen a jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(279). Reverend Sykes is witnessing the trial of Tom Robinson.
One thing that often occurs in court cases is bias. In “To Kill a Mockingbird”, the jury was all white and from a different area. However, Tom Robinson was a colored man accused of rape. On page 273, Atticus states, “The witnesses for the state, with the exception of the sheriff of Maycomb County, have presented themselves to you gentlemen, to this court, in the
To Kill a Mockingbird is famous for its controversy. In fact, it has been banned from being read at many schools for its use of racial, sexual, and political content, all of these aiding the book’s “big ideas”. To Kill a Mockingbird has many themes. For example, one is about racial injustice. You would think a jury would establish their final decision based upon the facts, but in this book, the jury had already made up its mind once it heard that the case was a white man versus a black man.
Atticus 's strong sense of morality and justice motivates him to defend Tom with vigor and determination, giving it all he 's got with one mission in mind. He wants the people of
In the 1930s, if a black man was on trial there was a ample chance he would be convicted even if evidence proved he was innocent. Throughout history humans being prejudice and bias have affected the lives of thousands of people; some ending with favorable outcomes while others weren’t so fortunate. Within the book To Kill a Mockingbird the readers learn that prejudice and bias people outnumber the understanding and kind. One decision or in this case twelve decisions decide the fate for an unfortunate man. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee reveals that people often follow their biases and prejudices rather than the truth.
Tom was charged for something he never did and was pleaded guilty. Atticus was being courageous and he possesses integrity for standing up for Tom. The first reason it makes sense for Atticus to stand up for Tom is because back then black people were treated as slaves and they weren’t appreciated like the whites were. Atticus was also being very courageous.
Since the very beginning of America, racism has always been an issue that cannot be solved. Slavery was the start of it and even after it ended, society had still managed to find ways to be oppressive. The Jim Crow laws were created for states in the south, in which it strongly enforced segregation from the late 1890’s until the 1960’s. People of color were not allowed to share the same bathrooms as whites, use the same water fountain, or eat in the same restaurant. The Jim Crow laws especially gave a huge advantage to people that are white in the courtroom.
Even if Atticus can’t win the trial he fights hard because he wants to be a role model to Jem and Scout. Atticus believes Tom is a mockingbird, meaning his innocent and a victim of racism. For him to take the case makes sense.
To Kill a Mockingbird The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee is set to place in the 1930’s, right in the middle of the Great Depression. During the time period, there was great prejudice, which is shown greatly in the courtroom with Tom Robinson. A scene in the movie shows Calpurnia sitting in the backseat of a car while Atticus is driving and the passenger seat is available for her to sit.
Atticus 's strong sense of morality and justice motivates him to defend Tom with vigor and determination, giving it all he 's got with one mission in mind. He wants the people of Maycomb town, whether they believe it or
He was trying to help out Mayella Ewell by gathering firewood and chopping dressers because he felt sorry for her, but was accused of rape because of his color. On page 87, Atticus said that “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” He was trying to help those who are innocent and in need, and even though he knew that he was going to lose the case, he wanted to try. Atticus hoped to better the lives of the mockingbird-like African-Americans in the South, so he attempted to help an innocent and helpless Tom to the best of his ability. Also, Tom’s crippled left arm is proof that he did not attack Mayella, however, he is accused because of his color.
