There are many avenues to travel in order to fight childhood obesity. The primary road is the changes that have occurred in the school lunch programs across the nation. Parents and students alike are complaining that lunches are being thrown away on a daily basis as they are unappetizing to students, in addition to students walking away hungry from the decreased amount of calories provided. All of this is happening because I think that the government is too involved in the lunch programs in our school districts and they need to get out.
I can honestly say that nutrition was not my first choice, or at least I thought it was not my first choice; for the past few years I always assumed that physical therapy was my future career. I spent my four years of undergrad studying Exercise and Sports Science because I wanted to learn every aspect of the human body, the biomechanics, physiology and even the human psyche of how the body interacts and ways to improve upon so that I can become a good physical therapist. During this time and actually before attending college, I was always in self-awareness of my body, nutritionally and physically. Consciously aware of what I was allowing into my body and making an effort to be physically active was a life hobby for me, little did I know that this was an immense stepping stone for what I was truly meant to be. On a regular basis, to stay fit and healthy, I would research healthier alternatives, exercise programs and preventative measures.

The benefits of nutrition education and counselling can directly influence nutritional status, consequently, helping in attaining the millennium development goal (MDG) to reduce the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition (Garcia, 2008). In a recent preliminary study conducted by ENDESA in 2007, the way in which the mother’s educational level influenced malnutrition was observed. Statistics reveal that 15.4 percent of children of mothers with no education suffered from chronic malnutrition, while 9.4 percent and 4.7 percent in children of mothers with secondary or higher education levels respectively (Acevedo & Menendez, 2006).
