There are a variety of different theories and approaches to counseling and each counselor or therapist has their own unique way and approach to various situations. While perusing and examining the distinctive types of hypothetical models of counseling, I found I was not able to connect fully with only one of them because there are so many approaches and ideas I can resonate with. I found myself viewing all of the different theories and approaches and pulling them together to make my own personal therapeutic approach to counseling. One professional organization that helps counselors with appropriate ethical approaches in decision making would be The American Counseling Association (ACA). Indeed, the ACA is filled with important ethical principles counselors need to adhere too. One important ethical principle is for counselors to be apprehensive of “Accurate Results”. This section makes sure the counselors are planning, conducting, and reporting research accurately (American Counseling Association, 2014, p. 15). The second ethical principle is “Research Records Custodian”.

As entire communities and populations have evolved, so too has the counseling world. One of the most important tools used in our contemporary age is data. As identified in ASCA (2005), data is the best method to associate with the success of a comprehensive counseling program. It gives validity to the improvement of educational systems.

One ethical issue is that of a counselor being able to balance their personal beliefs versus their profession. A counselor must be able to resolve their own feelings toward a client or their behavior and enter the professional relationship from non-judgmental standpoint. Another key ethical issue is that of dual relationships. A counselor must understand that there is no circumstance in which a client and counselor must engage in a relationship outside of the professional aspect. It is unethical for a client and counselor to have any sort of social interaction whatsoever and boundaries should be established (Scott, 2000).

When considering all of the possible ethical violations that could occur within a counseling relationship, what are the top three most common violation reports made? I found a study that determine the most ethical violations of counselors. After, reading the journal, I found that the professionals were not about to do their job efficiently. The professionals treated clients in areas they were not qualified for.

The most critical section of the ACA’s code is section E that focuses on evaluation, assessment and evaluation. According to the section, while using MBTI or any other assessment tool, mental health counselors should consider personal, cultural and social factors while making assessments. For instance, counsellors should recognize the value of past prejudices in misdiagnosis of specific cultures or groups of people. The professional track I am pursuing is clinical mental health counseling. In regards to The American Counseling Association ethical guidelines, a counselor is to adhere to enhancing the human development, appreciating multiculturalism/diversity, advocating social justice, ensuring counselor-client relationship integrity, and practicing in an efficient and ethical manner (American Counseling Association, 2014). According to the American Mental Health Clinical Association (2016), the counselor is to be committed to their clients, committed to other professionals, committed to the clinical supervision, obtain professionalism, committed to the community they serve, and maintain integrity (American Mental Health Clinical Association, 2016).

The practice of counseling draws primarily upon empirical research from the social sciences. Theological constructions comes from a variety of sources including philosophy, church history, and Scripture. When individuals look for counseling, they normally ask the counselor what they can do to change things and wonder why their life is turning out the way it is. Counseling, in a nut shell, helps clients develop skills to cope with the different situations in their lives while theological reflection can help clients make meaning of these same dilemmas.

It is safe to say that ethics is the principal of what is considered morally correct. The Zimbardo prison study is a controversy still be studied to this day. The famous study focussed on the dangers of having too much power and it soon became an unethical milestone for psychology. In this semester, I have been exposed to the subject of Introduction to Guidance and Counselling which is a new field of study for me. After I have received this lesson, I can relate my experiences with what I have learned. Not only that, I also have different perspective towards after I learned this subject.
