Industrial and Transportation Revolution During the late 1800s, the United States economy changed due to new inventions, remarkably rapid growth, and new forms of communication and transportation. With the American Industrial Revolution in full swing, the shift in society was prevalent. In the late 19th century the growth of the industry moved Americans from rural farms to factories. This shift in mass production, made production faster and cheaper. Although the United States prevailed as the powerhouse of production, it came with some sacrifices. The factory worker was unskilled and paid a low wage.

The early industrial revolution was a time of the biggest change in the American economy. Advancements in the textile industry, changes in social class structure and increased transportation infrastructure were defining aspects of the industrial revolution. With the victory in the War of 1812 the Americans realized that it was time to produce goods in our country and to stop relying on Great Britain. The textile industry was the mark of change from home made products to products being produced in factories.

In 1807, Robert Fulton invented a steamboat that could withstand strong wind and the current. Unfortunately, Robert Fulton’s steamboat was not quite built to the necessary perfection and needed improvements to help it make it back on one of its trips. In 1811, Henry Miller Shreve improved Fulton’s steamboat to make it able to travel up the strong Mississippi River. Now people and goods could get transported farther and faster. Now that travel was easier along Rivers, cities grew.

As merchants and manufactures reorganized work routines and built factories. This output increased and goods that were once luxury were now part of everyone's everyday life. The importance of the division of labor and the factory were very strong.

Before the Industrial Revolution most of society lived in rural areas of the country and made a living for themselves and their families through farming and domestic work. Because of the lack of technology, these people were constrained in their abilities to produce at high levels of productivity which translated into low standards of living and to some only the necessities of food to survive. The Industrial Revolution transitioned 19th century American agricultural society into manufacturing of goods in large scales and high quality. Some of the major attributes to the Industrial Revolution were the building of roads, railroads, and canals.

The industrial revolution began with machines. Before the industrial revolution machines were prevalent but they weren't nearly as complex or efficient as the machines of the industrial revolution, and then on. Machines before the industrial revolution relied on an outside source of power; like wind, water, animal, or man power. But machines of the industrial revolution ran off of an engine, the new engine used gas to create controlled explosions.

The Industrial Revolution began in England in the middle 1700s. During the Industrial Revolution, workers became more productive, items were manufactured, prices dropped, making hard to make items available to the working and middle class and not only the wealthy. Life generally improved, but the Industrial Revolution was also harmful. Pollution increased, working conditions were harmful, and capitalists employed women and young children, making them work long hours for low wages.
