The Legalization Lookup: Why is Marijuana so Bad? An issue that is hotly debated in today 's world is if marijuana should be legalized in the United States or not. Evidence collected from the state points to the fact that marijuana should not be legalized. First and foremost, marijuana should not be legalized because it is a gateway drug, which means that it leads users to other dangerous drugs. Furthermore, minors could get their hands on marijuana, leading to it disrupting their brain growth. Marijuana is one of the leading causes of crimes, car accidents and other violent behaviors. It[marijuana] contains the chemical, tetrahydrocannabinol(THC), which is responsible for stimulating the CNS(central nervous system). Once THC starts working, it turns off nerve connections to the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for controlling your risk-taking actions, therefore, enabling people to partake in actions that are risky and careless. An increase in safety means that the government has to take steps to enforce new laws and policies, as well hire more policemen, to make sure that citizens stay safe. A quote that outlines the fact that marijuana causes safety problems is, "The dangers of secondhand smoke from cigarettes are well publicized, so common sense would just tell us that more widespread use of marijuana will increase the likelihood that other people would suffer the same damage from inhaling smoke," from NYLN.org(2014). It causes safety issues, can get in the hands of minors, and leads to other dangerous drugs. People think that marijuana cures and relaxes cancer patients. True, it has some benefits, but there are numerous other medications and treatments that relax patients and compromise the risk of cancer. Marijuana is a big safety risk, it causes the multitude of car accidents and other crimes. It also can affect minors who use it, causing them lower life satisfaction and later in life, psychosis.
