How do you go about living life? Do you look at life as being a race, or do you look at life as being run? Depending on the way you view life can tell you about the person you are. In “The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner” by Alan Sillitoe gives an inside look of the two perspectives from the point of view of a teenage boy named Smith. There are many differences between looking at the image of life as a run and looking at the image of life as a race. Looking and comparing life to a run as to a race would be as if you went about life in a more calm and relaxed way. Therefore, this may tell you that if you look at life as a run you are a calmer person and take on life from a day to day basis. Going for a run would be equivalent to looking at life as a journey, the destination or finish line not being the end goal, but the events from the beginning to the end is what matters. For this reason, you absorb and take in everything going on around you and you think about how these events and moments affect you in your life. On page 1207 of “The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner” Smith says, “And this long-distance running lark is the best of all, because it makes me think so good that I learn things even better than when I'm on my bed at night." Living life as a run expresses the importance of the journey and the little things, whereas viewing the image of life as a race expresses the importance of the end result more than the events that got you there. People say that a person’s past depicts their future. The good times can make a person optimistic in future times of worry or sadness. The bad times can make a person stronger or grateful of what they have no matter how little in future bad times. This can be seen by Louie Zamperini in the novel Unbroken. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, follows the life of Louie Zamperini during his career as an olympic runner and also as a prisoner of war during World War II.
The French leader who quickly rose through military ranks once stated “ Great ambition is the passion of a great character. Those endowed with it may perform very good or very bad acts. All depends on the principles which direct them." In Laura Hillenbrand’s nonfiction book Unbroken, the determined and ambitious man, Louie Zamperini against the belief of others persevered and qualified to run in the 1936 Berlin Olympics at a very young age. Through all of the miles that he ran it was Louie’s determination that made him a record breaker and a hero in the sport.
On the top of page 2, it remarks,”...which I have to do on account of I’m serious about my running…” She even says herself that she is critical about people interrupting. On page 5, it emphasizes that when she runs, she feels light, loosened up, and weightless. This explains that her passion for running comes from the warmth she experiences when running. On page 1, “There is no track meet where I didn't win the first-place medal.”
The multinational apparel corporation, Nike, in their commercials “Shades of Unlimited,” Oscar Isaac narrates a variety of athletes, known and unknown, are putting themselves through rigorous training and preforming amazing feats, Chance the Rapper raps over videos of NBA and WNBA players, A cover of Pursuit of Happiness, by artist “Lissie” plays over female athletes training, Bobby Cannavale giving an inspirational speech to current famous athletes infant selves, Mo Farah narrating over himself training, Allyson Felix’s brother narrates in the background, explaining what drives her and why he admires her, Serena Williams talking about her struggles both on her path to being one of the best, and the present. Nike’s purpose is to redefine their tag line, “Just Do It,” by showing a multitude of athletes preforming different stunts which seem impossible to do and the narrator freaking out over said stunts. Isaac first speaks with an inspirational tone, saying anyone has the ability to be an amazing athlete in their own right, then becoming excited when the athletes begin preforming more intense feats, in order to appeal to the audience that they’re experiencing the same state of awe.
Everyone knows the name of the company that owns the "Just Do It" slogan and the swoosh logo. Nike is a successful company that uses motivational advertisements on social media, which contain many different rhetorical appeals to connect to their consumer. By making logical, ethical, and credible arguments through the company's advertisements on Facebook they are successful in selling their product. These rhetorical appeals are also seen through the individual positive and negative comments on social media. Nike was founded in 1964 by a college track athlete and his coach from the University of Oregon.
A lot of people believe that people can’t change, and that if they did something before, they’ll do it again. This isn’t true, though. Being over six feet tall, Author of Born To Run, Chris McDougall was constantly being told by his physicians to stop running. However he defied the odds when he overcame his injuries by using as minimal equipment as possible while running. McDougall describes his encounters with various runners, especially the Tarahumara indians, to show runners that attitude is more important than expensive equipment, in the interest of proving that all humans are born to run. McDougall does not possess the typical “runner 's body.” He describes a time when he visited his doctor, Joe Torg, to ask what he could do in order to minimize his injuries while running.

In the film Cool Runnings, the characters break down several barriers by being the first Jamaican bobsledding team. Throughout the film there are more positive messages than any other sports film. This film is about four Jamaican men who create a bobsled team and try to compete in the 1988 Winer Olympics. The movie portrays all the perfect qualities of sports psychology such as goal setting, leadership, determination and motivation. Together these men come together and represent their country since they did not qualify for the summer Olympics in running.
Many important life lessons come from being in sports. The race I remember most from Track is my one of my very first. Although I do not recall what team we were versing, I recall the moments before my race. As I was warming up, I was very nervous and excited. My confidence level was high, because I believed in myself.
