Culture is an identity of a group of people. It can extend to customs, beliefs, and traditions. It is estimated that there are about 500 unique cultures on earth (Introduction to Sociology, 2016). Although we are all human beings, that are innumerable factors that make us different from one another. In order for children to be introduced to these cultures, they must go through socialization. Socialization is the process in which people are taught to be proficient members of society (Ron Hammond, 2015). Culture is introduced at a young age and each culture has a set of rules and norms that are incorporated within them. Interactions with other people is what lead to forming a culture. Without any kind of human interactions, we would not know how to act and when to do it. We would have no sense of self without interactions with other people. Charles H. Cooley developed the looking glass theory to help understand our self-concept. The theory uses a mirror as a metaphor for reflecting upon the actions and …show more content…
This is called ethnocentrism and can lead to a stronger connection within one’s own culture. By comparing different cultures, a sense of pride can form for your own traditions that may differ from other cultures. However, when talking about an ideal society this can cause some issues. An ideal society would be different for every culture. There are some universal aspects of culture, but they often differ in countless other ways. In order for a perfect society to exist, everyone must get along with each other. Assimilation must be avoided so nobody losses what makes them unique. Ideally every culture would bring something unique to the table and live together in harmony. Not everyone can be so accepting yet though, so problems still exist. In fact, even within just one culture an ideal society may not be
My first reading reaction paper is over week 4. I choose to write this paper about the letters from Franciscan missionaries warning Governor Vargas of secret Pueblo Indian meetings, Dec. 1695. These letters are between Governor Vargas and San Antonio between December 18, 1693 and March 20, 1694 Theism source starts with Vargas telling what the plan is and then San Antonio warning the Governor of the Pueblos plans to revolt and how the Natives reacted to the missionary’s coming into Santa Fe . These are right before the Pueblo Revolt and my biggest reaction from this primary source was the may I perceived the Spanish and the events that led up to the Pueblo Revolt of 1696. This paper influenced my learning because I feel like before this
Society needs people to make it. However, something in turn, has to make society. Culture turns people into societies. It puts its people up to certain standards, which are honorable to meet; and gives people their idea of right and wrong. In his book The Lord of the Flies, William Golding cleverly shows us what would happen without culture.
Ethnocentrism occurs when one culture comes into contact with another. It the evaluation of one culture based on preconceived ideas that have derived from the customs and traditions from one’s own culture. William Summer, an American sociologist, believes that an ethnocentrism is “A view of things in which one’s own group is the centre of everything and all others are scaled and rated in reference to it” (Sorrells 2013). This phenomenon can have detrimental outcomes; such as stereotyping and prejudice both of which may hinder intercultural relations and assimilation therefore impacting on societal cohesion.
Culture is what is brought up into society, but as time progresses, the more we restrain from it. Hence, it only exists in our minds. It is still being held up today but not as quite the same as the primitive days. It is the non-materialistic, materialistic and diversity that forms a people’s way of life.
Culture is an interesting concept. It is the traditions of a type of people as well as their arts, manners, and many other things. It’s essentially the collection of a peoples’ intellectual achievements. Your culture is with you from the time you’re born. It’s all around you, and shapes who you are as a person.
Socialization is a process that sociologist use and is defined as the way in which people learn the ways of the society in which they live. People can be socialized by many different things including peers, family and media. In Lindsay's case she is socialized heavily
John M. Barry includes an allusion to Lewis Carol 's novel, Through the Looking Glass, to explain how successful scientists gain their research from exploring the unknown. Within Barry 's use of allusion, scientists are meant to represent the character of Alice. Alice wanders through the looking glass into a world that is foreign to her, just as scientists venture through the unknown in search of a breakthrough or conclusion. Both Alice and the scientists are brave enough to make the journey into this alternate universe in search of the knowledge they do not currently obtain. Barry exemplifies how important it is that a scientist should be courageous when it comes to his or her work by stating, "A single step can take them through a looking
Social development is the way in which a child or young person learns to fit in to the world that they live in. Developing emotional resiliance, self reliance, principles, morals and learning to maintain friendships and relationships with others. In the first six months of life, babies will communicate through crying to express their needs, such as hunger, tiredness, warmth or emotional comfort. They will smile and form a close bond with their main caregivers.
When approaching the topic of a perfect society the first thing that comes to mind is Plato’s Utopian Society. Plato, a famous ancient Greek Philosopher wrote several dialogues and although little is known about his life due to a lack of surviving records it is unanimously agreed that he was one of the most influential figures in the development of philosophy in the Western tradition. In his book, The Republic Plato writes about the ideal human society where justice prevails and there are equality and egalitarianism among the people. This society is devoid of any crimes, any injustice and is a world where one can enjoy peace and happiness without the worry or fear of oppression of any kind. Plato went on to write how such a society would
Everyone around the world has different beliefs, behaviors, objects and religion that are common for a particular society or a group of people who enjoys shared values and thus gives positive contributions to the society. This is called Culture. These are carried on by the people from generation by generation. It is the particular view point, customs and beliefs that discern one culture from another. It is transferred from one generation to another through language, material objects, and daily rituals.
Ethnocentrism and its prevalence in U.S culture Ethnocentrism is judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one’s own culture. Individuals who are ethnocentric judge other groups in relation to their own ethnic group or culture. I think The United States likes to refer to themselves as the “big mixing pot” of cultures. I would agree, we do have a wide range of different cultures, but that does not mean that we do not “evaluate and judge other cultures based on how they compare to our own cultural norms.” I think us as Americans feel this way, because we are too scared to change what we have learned and known since birth.
Culture is defined by characteristics that are shared by a group of people. It is usually represented by language, religion, cuisine, traditional clothes, music, arts, and is dependent on social habits. Therefore, culture plays a major role in an individual’s perspective of life and his/her personality. Cultures have differed than each other, depending on the places they were established in, the way of survival people pursued to acclimate with different circumstances, and how they shared their experiences with each other.
This reflection helps in the understanding of why things happen the way they do or how it effects my thought process. It is about going beyond the general concept of things and into the root of the idea. The development of such concepts allows me to ask the
From this case, there have two theories would be a “best fit” for Dr. Jannie. One of the suitable theories that make The Hour Glass successful is Trait Theories. This theory leadership focuses to identify a link to successful leadership in a variety of different personality traits and characteristics. While Trait Theory builds off of the “Great Man” theory, it still adheres to that leadership is naturally indispensable. The search for the characteristics or traits of effective leaders has been studied by the central leadership, which leads to the assumption that leadership is embedded in the characteristics of the individual.
Culture is a very vast and complicated term. As a result, it is extremely difficult to provide an all encompassing definition. In layman terms, culture is used to refer to symbolic markers used by societies to differentiate and distinguish themselves from other societies. These symbolic markers range from religion to customs and traditions to something as basic as language and clothes. Basically culture is a way of living.
