In the book, “The Midwife’s Apprentice”, written by Karen Cushman, is about a girl trying to find out who she is as a person with a lot of trouble along the way. Alyce struggles with self-esteem. She is the girls name, she chooses the name after another girl. Alyce decided to change her name from Beetle to Alyce after a comment and a comb a guy gave her. Alyce is a dynamic character. She changes during the course of the novel due to her experiences and actions. When the novel begins, Alyce is Brat. She is homeless. Ulrich uses Marth Ballard diary entries along with other historical documents from the eighteenth century to show her audience the life of women specifically a midwife in the American society, and the sexual standards that were present during the eighteenth century. Martha Ballard the wife of Ephraim Ballard was midwife during the eighteenth century in Hallowell, who not only played the role of a midwife in the society, but also the role of a wife and a mother. Ulrich starts to book by talking about scarlet fever epidemic that had taken places in Hallowell during the summer of 1787. During the time of the fever and after the epidemic had ended, Martha played the role of an important member in the community, even though the social structure in Hallowell was giving more importance to male doctors.

This because she is a capricious protagonist who can be perceived as utterly, unstable and unreliable. In one passage she cries and feels pity for herself, and in the following she expresses maternal compassion and care for others. Alice’s constant changes in size are puzzling for her. She seems to struggle in order to comprehend her identity, but the various oscillations in size and in life phases cause considerable confusion on her. So she decided to make a big change in her life and change her attitude and lifestyle towards different things. When Alyss was younger she would displease people because of her childish attitude. Later in her life she becomes a mature, smart, attractive young woman. Mrs. Liddell is so pleased with Alyss that she comments “‘you’ve made me so terribly happy Alice’”(200). When Alice was welcomed into the Liddell family, Mrs. Liddell thought that she needed to grow up and become the mature young woman she naturally should be.
In a world where lives are born and taken every second, I think back to my childhood and my earliest memory is my parents divorce, but there 's so much more to me than just that. Who I am and how I got here today is a collaboration of many more memories. My parents divorce, my siblings, friendships I’ve made and lost, achievements and failures, and my future goals and aspirations. Ultimately, all of this makes, and has made, me. It is a collection of influences, experiences, and memories that make up all of us, as individuals.

Self is the ability to know right from wrong, understanding the society norms, behaviors, culture, and values. An example of this is learning and talking the native language, know how to eat from a spoon, and able to communicate with other people. If people or myself fail to experience socialization, they will not possess the acquired skills needed to develop self. This process is required for me to be apart and successful fit in the society.
