“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, both portray many examples of imagery. As the two stories progress, both of their imagery levels become very detailed and create an entertaining plot for the reader to imagine. From going in depths to give imagery of the island, the characters, and the scenery in the story, “The Most Dangerous Game” uses many examples of imagery for the reader, making the story better and more senseful. Even though both of the stories provide imagery, “The Most Dangerous Game” provides the better of the two stories. There are many ways “The Most Dangerous Game” uses imagery to create imaginative ways for the reader to look at the story.

I have read the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. In this story, Rainsford, a faimed author and hunter, falls off his ship and winds up on an island where he meets a man. This man turns out to be a former Russian General, General Zarroff. General Zarroff , it just so happens, is a hunter in his own but of a different nature. To escape the island he must outwit his host in the General’s own game of hunting.

The Most Dangerous game, General Zaroff is like a shadow. He possesses the trait of an evil man because he is a hunter of men. He likes to hunt men because that is the only thing that gives him a thrill, so it makes him a murderer and an evil person. So, shadow represents him because it is very evil to hunt men and want to kill them.

Due to the use of first person in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” Montresor’s syntax and diction are the only mechanisms used to characterize Fortuno in the story. This subjects the perception of both Fortuno and Montresor to a great deal of bias. Although Montresor claims that Fortuno has committed “a thousand injuries” (127) there are never any specific instances of his treachery cited within the text.

General Zaroff and The Atrocity That is Hunting Humans Hunting animals or people for sport is cruel,unethical, and unfathomable. Human beings like General Zaroff, who believe that hunting the weak of humankind is acceptable are ruthless monsters. I strongly disagree with General Zaroff’s way of thinking. Hunting humans is cruel and inhumane. Zaroff claims he is “civilized”(14) yet he says he hunts humans because it gives him “pleasure”(14).

Suspense Can Give Different Vibes Suspense is a key ingredient to a tale of action. The mood of suspense is evident in the two short stories, The Most Dangerous Game and The Cask of Amontillado. The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, tells a story about a man trapped on an island. The Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allen Poe, tells of a man assassinating another man in a catacomb. Though the two stories’ moods differ, a notable element is the same.

Zaroff wanted to find the “ideal animal” to hunt (Connell 69). He wanted an animal that could reason with him. Unfortunately, the only animal that can do that is humans. He started to kill humans because of his boredom with hunting animals. Zaroff deliberately isolated himself from society so he could fulfill his satisfaction of wanting to hunt humans.

General Zaroff shows his true wicked being when he makes the statement of , “ Let me show you my collection of heads,” (9). That quote truly showcases General Zaroff’s evil roots. There is not a person in the existence of the world with any sort of morals or respect that would have a

“I am strong, I hunt the scum of the earth”(17). He only kills them because he wants to hunt something that can reason, something that can change its mind when faced with a life or death situation. “But they are men,” said Rainsford hotly. “Precisely,” said the general”(17). Zaroff is an apex hunter, and he demands the ultimate prey.

Edgar Allan Poe is most famous for the gothic themes he presents in his writings, this was no exception for Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado”. Several important ideas are brought up about the story’s central theme of revenge. These ideas can be broken down into 3 parts: the incentive, the extent, and the reaction of the person partaking in revenge. It is essential to consider these ideas while reading Poe’s story, in order to comprehend his views on revenge. It also provides the reader the ability to question their own views on revenge as well as compare it with Poe’s.

Referring to the quote, it exposes how Zaroff tells about the prey and Rainsford got surprised. He even tells Rainsford that he hunts different types of people.

Zaroff kills to fill his need of boredom but Montresor kills for his revenge. These 2 characters both state their reasonings Zaroff says ‘’Hunting had ceased to be what you call a sporting proposition it had become too easy’’. Pg34 Connell. This shows Zaroff's struggle to fill his hunting desires ‘’I must not punish but punish with impunity’’ pg 83 Poe. Showing that Montresor wants to punish with reason to get justice from Fortunato.

General Zaroff wants to kill people for the fun of it and to challenge himself. And when the character, Rainsford, confronts him about hunting people being a crazy idea, Zaroff is surprised that Rainsford doesn’t like the idea. Zaroff is similar to Montresor, in the way that they want to kill people. Although, they have different reasons for doing so. Montresor kills because he wants Fortunato to pay for the so called injuries he committed towards Montresor.

And later on the story we learn that general Zaroff 's ideal animal to hunt is a human being, because it is able to reason and this is why humans are the most dangerous
