Andy: Imagine you are stranded on an island, starving and thirsty. You have managed to build a fire and have pushed through countless rainy nights. You are using the skills of a survivor. These skills have been used by other survivors such as Hyeonseo Lee, a North Korean who escaped her country. Aron Ralston uses survival traits to survive being trapped in between a boulder and a wall of rock. Rainsford from the story “The Most Dangerous Game” used his skills to survive being hunter by General Zaroff. Throughout these three stories, three survival traits are used to live through harsh conditions. Resourcefulness, determination, and willpower are the traits one must have to be a survivor.
Resourcefulness is the survival trait used by Rainsford in “The Most Dangerous Game.” On page 20 of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford constructs a Malay man-catcher trap as an attempt to kill General Zaroff. Rainsford does this using the natural resources around him. Throughout the story, Rainsford builds two other traps as well. By building these traps, Rainsford was able to take the upper hand against

On page two of "My Escape from North Korea", Lee explains that she and her family have been jailed multiple times, yet she kept on pushing to get her family and herself to freedom. The determination that Lee demonstrated is what got her family to safety. This is an inspiring example of determination. Lee also shows determination on an earlier paragraph on page 2. In paragraph 8 of "My Escape from North Korea", Hyeonseo Lee used determination to get passed the Chinese police. This is an example of determination because of cracking under the pressure of the police interrogation, Lee was able to achieve her goal of escaping North Korea. Because of Lee's determination, she was able to get herself and her family out of North
Now in “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford has to find a way to outsmart the hunter “ The softness of the earth had given him an idea. He stepped back from the quicksand a dozen feet or so and, like some huge prehistoric beaver, he began to dig”(Connell 21). This is how Rainsford thought he could outsmart the hunter. Rainsford wanted to trick the hunter because if not the hunter would kill Rainsford because the hunter does not like to hunt normal things but humans. If Rainsford survives three days he could leave which is why he has to outsmart the hunter.
As well as, in “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford used is craftiness to show what it takes to be a survivor by being hunted by General Zaroff. In the story, Rainsford prepared a contraption that General Zaroff did not realize and he was struck in the shoulder by a lifeless tree.(page 14 line numbers 592-597) That contraption was very crafty to create. The contraption saved Rainsford because he would have gotten shot by General Zaroff. That also gave him another night to create another contraption so kill General Zaroff. Being crafty showed what it takes to survive by being hunted by another
The IRA Sniper overcame the pain of his wounds. He then proceeded to attempt and succeeded in a daring and dangerous plan to save his life. Deuce too overcomes the pain of her wounds but she later endangers her own life to save another at the risk of being eaten alive. My own experiences show that determination comes in many sizes. Determination is something necessary for every choice and while having all the determination in the world will not guarantee success, having too little will most definitely will ensure failure.
Back in North Korea, Lee’s family was settled on the border to China in the northern region of the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea). Lee would always look across and marvel at the “sea of lights” in China, and wonder why North Korea did not have even the luxury of electricity. She would also see
It didn’t matter to her that she would fail. It mattered that she was able to choose her decisions for herself and not having other people to do it for her. She was bullied, pushed to the brink, but still she never gave up on
“Her actions remind me that, even under unbearable circumstances, one can still believe in justice,” in David Henry Hwang’s foreword, in Ji-Li Jiang’s memoir Red Scarf Girl, commemorated even during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution anyone can overcome adversity (9). Ji-Li Jiang was a young teenager at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, and living through a very political time in China’s history made Ji-Li into the person she is today. Ji-Li’s intelligence, her choices, and family devotion made her into the headstrong and successful person she is today. Even when Ji-li thought she was unintelligent, others saw she was wise. There were many moments when Ji-Li was reminded she was very smart.
In the short story The Most Dangerous Game, the author Richard Connell shows that Rainsford needs control of his emotions, patience , and expert hunting and decision making skills in order to defeat Zaroff. Rainsford needs to gain control of his emotions to outthink Zaroff, who symbolizes Rainsfords "steep hill". When he finds that he is going to be hunted his natural instinct is to run and panic, but then he stops to look around and get a grip on the task at hand. Then at a critical moment when Zaroff finds him in a tree, Rainsford panics again because he realizes Zaroff is on his trail and is toying with him. Once again, he gains control of his emotions and formulates a plan.
Everyone has to overcome adversity in their life. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character, Rainsford, fell of his boat at night time On the Island, Rainsford finds a home where General Zaroff lives. The problem is that the only way he can leave the island is if he survives a “game”. Where General Zaroff is hunting him. So Rainsford has to survive for three days.
Rainsford faces many conflicts along his journey on the island, such and man v.s nature, man v.s. himself, and man v.s man. He has to overcome all of this in order to keep calm, and survive. One of the conflict in “The Most Dangerous Game”, was man v.s. nature. This conflict presented itself at the beginning of the story, when Rainsford fell into the water.
The the last scene is significant because Rainsford has the confidence and skills to win against General Zaroff. Likewise, how he trusts his instincts and himself to set up the traps, but also, jump off a cliff. Richard Connell uses situational irony because Rainsford the hunter becomes the hunted. It states how Rainsford made a trap in the quicksand. As well as, when he jumped off the cliff he made good decisions.
He must use his skills as a hunter to evade capture and survive in the wilderness. Through these challenges, Rainsford’s physical abilities
“The Most Dangerous Game” Essay In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell A man named Rainsford hears a gunshot and falls off a boat on to which he was traveling upon. Hunters believe animals are not capable of reasoning and they see them as something lesser than humans. Throughout time, these positions can change. The short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell, consists of General Zaroff being the hunter and Rainsford being the hunted. During the story, their positions change to the complete opposite.
Determination means having or exhibiting the quality that makes a person continue trying to do something even when it is difficult, and the events that transpire throughout the novel have definitely shown that theme. Determination has aided the teenagers to do many things that they thought they were not able to do before. For example, Ellie was listening to Robyn recount her heroic effort to carry an injured Lee to safety. As Ellie is listening she thinks to herself, “Now I know Robyn’s fit, and strong, but she isn’t that strong”(Ellie 133). This is truly a remarkable feat of strength, achieved through Robyn
These reasons are why I believe that Rainsford’s ability to reason is a very important and helpful characteristic and it played a very important role in his survival on Ship Trap
