In the documentary The Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, Morgan Doughty, the girlfriend of Paul Murdaugh, states, “They [the Murdaugh family] would come up with a storyline...when I tell you it's like, you could snap your fingers and it was gone” (np). The Murdaugh family, as some would say, were above the law. Throughout six years in the secluded town of Islandton, South Carolina, five murders occurred and they all lead back to one family: the Murdaughs. These murders were initially seen as mere “accidents,” but when police decided to take a deep dive into the most recent case, the murder of Paul and Maggie Murduagh, shocking new evidence came to light. Alex Murdaugh, the father and husband of this family, was accused of the murder of …show more content…
Alex Murdaugh struggled financially, he believed murdering Paul and Maggie would solve his problems. For example, Alex Murdaugh abused his client’s funds from the family’s firm to satisfy his personal financial needs. Alex Murdaugh spent through his savings to pay for the illegal substances he used on a daily basis. Bates adds, “In addition to this alleged attempt to commit insurance fraud, PMPED has claimed that Alex Murdaugh's resignation from their firm was because it was discovered that he misused funds from the law firm” (np). Alex Murdaugh unexpectedly stepped away from the Parker Law Firm because of his financial struggles. He resorted to using the law firm's money for illegal activities. He then suspiciously stepped away before the problem was made known to …show more content…
To emphasize, Alex struggled with his addiction for many years and he hid it from everyone. Gloria, the family maid, found the drugs under the bed and informed Paul. Paul confronted his father about it only to receive backlash. This could have been another trigger that set off the killing of Maggie and Paul. Harpootlian says, ‘When PMPED went public with embezzlement accusations, the story from Alex’s team gelled: Alex suffered from 20 years of opioid addiction and blew “most” of his millions on “checks written to drug dealers’’ (Westfall,49). He was hooked on his opioids, affecting his savings and family. Consequently, the discovery of his opioids may have led to another murder. Morgan states, “Murdaughs don't get told 'no' much” (np). A couple weeks after Paul confronted Alex, Gloria unexpectedly tripped over the hunting dogs and sadly passed away. Gloria had worked for the Murdaughs for 25 years so it is suspicious she happened to trip over the dogs that usually stay in their kennels. Along with his financial issues, his use of opioids made everything worse including his relationships he destroyed throughout his
Secondly, Alex is perhaps a little too trusting. He trusted Lao Xu because he appeared to be a good and knowledgeable person, “Lao Xu was there too. He’s a great guy.”(pg 27) Later in the book, when Eddie talks about Lao Xu being a spy to hurt Alex, Alex exclaims,“ ‘Spy!
He was extremely wealthy and operated a law firm. This law firm had been owned by generations of the Murdaugh Family. Alex had a wife and two sons whom he appeared to love dearly. Little did anyone know the secrets the family had hidden. In 2021, Alex had frantically called the police because someone had shot his youngest son, Paul, and his wife, Maggie, killing them.
Throughout the book so far Alex has been in the courtroom as the prosecutor against Brendan Quillian. The trial right away goes really well for her then the jury starts to lead towards the defense when her key witness lets out a secret that Alex had not known about. This throws Alex a curveball; it made her as angry as a lion disturbed in its habitat. After the third day of the trial the explosion takes place, which has Alex running around with her friend Mike trying to figure out who did this and how it could be connected to Brendan. Alex because she was so mad at her witness, stated, “I’m adjusting my temper, not my body heat.
Alex Murdaugh was a South Carolina lawyer, so it was basically his job to lie. Alex knew that society was not going to be kind to him after the double murder or the suicide attempt because this is how society views murders. As to the murderer’s end, of the three alternatives—execution, suicide, and madness. The first is preferable; for if he commits suicide he refuses to repent, and if he goes mad he cannot repent, but if he does not repent society cannot forgive. Execution, on the other hand, is the act of atonement by which the murderer is forgiven by society.
Once upon a time, there lived a young boy in his low teens by the name of Sir Thomas “Tommy” Edwin Sevington. He was the son of noble house Sevington. He lived in a time of tyranny, where egalitarians were few and far between, and the social structure was very stratified. The penal system was so harsh that very common people had their hands cut off for stealing bread or fruit. By the time he was partway through seventh grade, Tommy had been corrupted by the horrible surroundings he grew up in.
The Mississippi Murders three CORE workers were killed in Mississippi in 1964. There names were Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner. They were killed by Sam Bowers,Cecil Price, and Edger Ray Killen. Sam bowers the head of KKK of Mississippi. Gave out the order for elimination of Michael Schwerner.
I decided I couldn’t believe in a God who would let something that terrible happen to a boy like Alex.” (pg.60). This does show that he left for himself and never wondered what it did to the people around him. And if they got hurt because of it. But the book also says “He was polite, friendly, well-groomed… he seemed extremely intelligent,
The Murdaugh Murders documentary has taken the true-crime world by storm with its gripping tale of a prominent South Carolina family's fall from grace. The story follows the murder investigation of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, who was found shot to death on their family's hunting property in 2019. This tragic event has rocked not only the small town of Hampton but also the entire state, as the Murdaughs are a well-respected and influential family in South Carolina. The documentary delves into the complex dynamics of this high-profile murder case and examines how family ties can complicate investigations. From the outset, it is clear that there are many layers to this case, with rumors and speculation swirling around every aspect of it.
Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia or hallucinations Inability to cope with daily problems or stress Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people Alcohol or drug abuse Major changes in eating habits, Sex drive changes Excessive anger, hostility or violence Suicidal thinking. I will go back to this list and connect quotes from the book to prove that Alex was having many of these. For my first Scope I will prove and expand on how he segregated himself from society. The second will be that he through away a successful future and years of work. I will conclude with the fact that he lost the ability to judge the ability of himself and his body leading to his death.
Later in the investigation “His presence at the murder scene was uncovered thanks to a cellphone video taken by his son”. This video was taken by Paul of Alex at the kennels where Paul was shot and killed. This video comes only an hour before Paul was killed and in the video Alex was shown wearing a different shirt then what he was when police showed up. In addition “During his own testimony over two days, Mr. Murdaugh admitted that he was at the dog kennels the night of the murders, after previously telling investigators that he had not been there. Mr. Murdaugh said his lies were triggered by paranoia because of his longtime addiction to painkillers.”
I think that Alex harmed his kids by letting them get away with so much and that is why there is so much bad that followed them. The Murdaugh’s were not scared of the law which is why they always worked their way out of the trouble they got into. Paul would drive highly intoxicated all the time whether it was by car or boat. The power that the other families said the Murdaugh's held above everyone made it harder for them. They just wanted to protect their kids and find Mallory, but Alex was worried about Paul tearing down their family name because of the accident.
Around the age of ten, his father, James, abandoned Alex, his mother, and his brother (James Jr.), leaving the weight of raising two sons on Rachel. Three years later, Rachel died due to a severe fever, and Alex was left to fend for himself and his brother. Because they were illegitimate children, the Church of England did not allow Alexander and James Jr. to be a part of the church, and denied them an education in the church school. This, however, did not stop Alexander, and decided to educate himself.
The killings began in the summer of 1984 when the first known murder of 79 year old Jennie Vincow occurred. The stabbing murder and sexual assault occurred outside of her home. It took a while before the police found out who was behind the killings due to the clues not being revealing enough at the crime scene towards the start. A shoe print was the only clue that the police had at first. A lot of the crimes done were very similar (i.e. murder and rape) causing the police to think that they all could perhaps be related.
Alex has no regard whatsoever for the rights of others and the rights of society; the behaviour mentioned is common amongst psychopaths. Alex, spent his youth stealing, torturing,
The lynching of Jube Benson The Short story, “The lynching of Jube Benson”, by the African-American writer Paul Laurence Dunbar, takes place in the southern parts of the USA in the 1900s, which is at the same time as the emancipation of the slaves. More accurately, the story takes place in Gordon Fairfax’s library, where three men were present; Handon Gay, who is an educated reporter, Gordon Fairfax, who is an library owner and Doctor Melville, who is a doctor. The author collocate these three men at jobs which is powerful in the society. The story is about a white narrator, Doctor Melville, who explains, to the two others, that he has been involved in a lynching of his black friend, Jube Benson.
