There were many musical elements heard throughout these pieces and it was interesting to hear how they varied in each song and suite. In Intermezzo, it began with a quieter violin solo melody creating a monophonic texture. Soon after, it became accompanied by the other violins and cellos, then the full ensemble came in creating a moderate, flowing melody at about mezzo forte and switching to a polyphonic texture. Next, there was a harp solo at forte with many crescendos and decrescendos. The full ensemble enters again raising the dynamics to forte before decrescendoing and slowing down to end with a held note and final tone. The first movement of the Swan Lake Suite, Scene, which began with the violins playing with an oboe solo on top. The oboe was playing various crescendos and decrescendos at a mezzo piano dynamic and the tempo was moderate. This ends with the high woodwinds playing a string of the melody, passing it to the low brass with the strings very quietly in the background and then what seemed to be a diminuendo. I had been in band from fifth grade through high school so even just hearing an ensemble sound again was amazing as I miss band very much. I also really enjoyed The Swan Lake Suite as it has been one of my favorite pieces since I was little, so it was also really nice to hear something that I already knew a little of how it would go. The orchestra sounded amazing and I am also good friends with one of the bassoon players so it was neat that one of our concerts to choose from had someone I knew in it. It was so interesting to hear all of the elements we have been discussing in class, actually in person and it was helpful that I was in band throughout school so it was easier to pick out certain aspects like melody, tempo, and dynamics for example. On Wednesday, the 18th of May, I attended and participated in the Final Band Concert of the year. Throughout the year, all band students continually practice pieces and the Final Band Concert is the only concert to have every band student in it from fifth grade all the way up to twelfth. This concert is always very special because it is both the first large concert for the fifth graders and the last for many students. The concert started from the Fifth Grade Band, then to the Junior 6th Grade, Advanced 7th and 8th Grade band, and finally to the High School Concert Band. The concert began exactly on time at 19:00.
The fact that people could actually sing like that and all of the different special effects and scene changes were happening right in front of my eyes got me hooked. I am sure that is a similar story to many other peoples. Andrew Lloyd Webber changed the way the general public responded to live theatre. He had the world hooked on the beautiful melodies as well as the intriguing story lines. I think he is the reason many people began theatre in the first place.
As the string instruments moved in harmony, the brass instruments were incorporated with a slow tune. The piece eventually progressed to be more theatrical. The melodies gathered pace and the music became more powerful with the consistent entries of different instruments and melodies. One category of the instrument was pursued by another and eventually all instruments were playing in harmony with each other. The ending was the peak of the piece.
A comparison of the Beijing Opera and the Italian Opera reveals a significant contrast in almost all fundamental areas of music between the two examples. Because of cultural influences, the two performances share little commonalities, as the timbre, medium, elements of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, form and phonic structure are definitely not similar. For instance, the musical and physical performance dynamics of the Beijing opera music are forceful, the timbre is loud, tinny and harsh, the rhythm is lively and vigorous, while the Italian Opera music has a gentle dynamic, steady and rolling rhythm and an emotionally deep timbre. One commonality that is noted for both examples, is the powerful delivery of the entertainment.
This piece consisted of two different movements. The second part of it was a lot more allegro, upbeat, and energized. The introduction of the piece is the same as that of “The Raiders March”, but with strings playing in the background. The A melody begins with the trumpet as the strings fade out (0:07). The first minute and a half of the song is played the same as that of “The Raiders March”, though due to differing sound equalization, some parts stick out more or less than they do in the original. For example, in the third repetition of the A melody, one can more clearly hear the xylophone accompanying the melody here than in “The Raiders March”. The piece begins to differ more significantly after the break following the third repetition of the A melody when the piece modulates down a half step instead of up like in the original (1:37).
A Chorus Line was different from any of the plays that we had seen during the semester, given that it was a musical. This is definitely what I am more accustomed to from watching my friends through the years preform this style alone essentially as well as my sister playing any Broadway musical soundtrack she could get her hands on for weeks on end. This felt so drastically different from anything else we had seen in the semester because it seemed that there was no end goal or resolution, it just ended. Sure, a handful of characters grew but a lot was left to the imagination at the end of the play. One thing that always sticks out within a musical are the songs itself.

It features two main themes, plus many melodic episodes. It brought a sense of suspense, with the opening bass drum so loud and firm, the audience jumped a little in their seats. You could envision war while listening to this piece, the stage was the battle field, the left side of the orchestra was the Axis Power, the right side was the Allies and the bass drum were the drummer boy. This Chaconne begins with a singing violin melody almost beguiling in its character, with a natural sense of ebb and flow that traverses numerous episodes. With the addition of double stops and chordal textures, the intensity gradually rises until it reaches the breaking point where the violin charges forward through a frenetic, virtuosic passage. The tension and register continue to rise to the point where the violin sounds as if it is screeching. I really enjoyed his enthusiasm and love for music, which was very noticeable during his performance. I enjoyed his part in the song and his great skills on the piano. The rhythm of a song allows the audience to add their own motion to the unique beat and “Concord Blues Plus 8” created an entertaining beat that I appreciated greatly. When I was younger I played the piano, so I felt I could relate the most with that instrument and could understand the piano part the best. The songs that were played at the concert added depth to the course because all the musicians were very talented and brought a great jazz experience to the concert.
Prior to this, I have never attended a classical concert. I actually had no clue as to what to expect because I could not find a review for UH concerts. The Jazz Orchestra performed in the Moores Opera House on a stage setting similar to that of my middle school band. The band instruments were tiered on the risers while the other performers were simply beside the risers. There were a few noticeable differences such as, the microphones set in the center for soloists, and a marker hanging from above to mark the center of the stage.
First of all, the piece is quite interesting as a prelude – an introductory piece of music as it start off with dynamic and vibrant sounds that include the whole ensemble. This piece is structured as a three-part or ternary form which consists of ABA’ form. The idea of this piece is mainly act as an introductory of a story because this piece is only an excerpt from a bigger orchestral performance. From what I have heard, the solo performance is mainly comprise of the woodwind instruments in part B that indicated the slight sign of relief and calmness. The piece has a lot of variation where the composer include different timbres and dynamics such as the high dynamic structure during the first and the last part with the associating crashes of cymbals.
This movement begins with a beautiful love song until a turbulent middle sections rudely interrupts its dream-like reverie. The finale, Andante-Allegro, begins with a quiet, introspective introduction in the piano alone which then leads into an exuberant Allegro. At the Allegro, the violin breaks forth with ascending, slashing passages from its lowest to its highest register, creating a sense of drama and importance. However, then comes a playfulness that sneaks into the music almost without notice. And then after a rush of virtuosic passages from both violin and piano, the sonata comes to an explosive end.
