This is a story about three brothers who live with each other after their parents were killed in an accident. Darry is the oldest and works as a roofer. Sodapop is the middle child who is handsome and works at a gas station. And Ponyboy is the youngest, a smart kid trying to grow up. The town they live in is socially divided in two. The greasers are the poor kids who wear leather jackets and oil their hair. The socials, or Socs, are the rich kids who have nice cars and clothes. These two groups are constantly fighting. However, the church they were staying at catches on fire and some of the local kids are trapped in the building. Ponyboy and Johnny go into the burning building and rescue them, but both are hurt. They are admitted to a hospital, where they are declared heroes. Meanwhile, the socs and greasers are planning a big rumble to settling things. Both gangs line up and fight each other. The greasers win. However, Johnny dies from his injuries from the fire and Dallas gets himself shot by the police. Ponyboy is acquitted of all charges for the slaying of the one soc and the three brothers grow closer together. The underlying theme of social class and the division that social classes create is important. This isn't quite the Capulet and Montague setup we get in Romeo and Juliet, but it's something more relatable to contemporary readers. Money does divide people. Poor people tend to live in a certain part of an area, while the rich people live in another. From here it progresses. Without knowing it, Ponyboy, Soda Pony’s older brother, Johnny and Two-bit, start flirting with two Soc’s girlfriends. This sparked a number of events, such as when Johnny and Ponyboy get home, Ponyboy 's oldest brother, Darry, gets angry at him because he was out too late and then hits him which lead to Ponyboy and Johnny running away to the nearest park where they get jumped by Socs and Johnny kills a man, from there they became criminals on the run. They hide out in an abandoned church which later catches on fire and they rescue children from it but Johnny gets hurt. Ponyboy is a 14 year old who lives with his brothers in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Dally finally gets bored of teasing them and go gets food for himself. Ponyboy, Johnny and the girls start having conversations about their gangs. So now the girls need a ride and their boyfriends(which are socs) sees them walking with greasers and they get out and fuss a little and the girls get in the car and drive off. Johnny and Ponyboy stay out a little longer and the socs return. Johnny and Ponyboy where getting jumped and one of the greasers were drowning Ponyboy to death.
When pony starts to pick up one of the the kids they bit him. One last similarity is that the greasers and soc’s still have a rumble, and after the rumble Ponyboy is badly hurt. So Dally takes him to the hospital to get him treated, and so they can see Johnny before he dies. While on their way the get stopped by a policeman because they were speeding. Dally makes something up and tells the policeman that he saw Pony fall off his motorcycle and is taking him to the hospital.
When the boys get back to the church, the church is on fire and there are some children there on a field trip, the boys race inside to help the children who were not fortunate enough to get out. On the way out the roof falls on Johnny burning him severely and breaking his back. Johnny dies after being carried by an ambulance back into town, before dying he tells Ponyboy to “Stay Gold” which had a big impact on Ponyboy. Dally is filled with grief and decides to rob a store, he flees the scene but is chased by the police to a vacant lot. The police see Dally hold a “black object” and shoot
Even though the Socs seem to have it all, they also face rough times. In an important event, Ponyboy's friend Johnny is hurt badly by some Socs, showing how violent the fights betweeen the two groups can be. This shows that even if you seem to have verything, you can still have rouble and danger. The Socs may have stuf and money, but they still have to deal with the problems that come from fighting with the greasers.
Instead of the Socs hurting them, Johnny does by actually kills one of the Socs, making the Socs run away and Johnny and Pony to run away to an abandoned church because of their actions. Eventually, they go out to get lunch with their other Greaser friend who planned their run away, Dally, but the church they were just in is burning now with kids in the church. They save the children and are celebrated as heroes but Johnny dies from saving the kids and unfortunately, Dally suicides because of Johnny’s death.
Why did this happen? p. 6-7 On the way home from the movies, Ponyboy got jumped by the Socs. He got beat up, and they tried to cut his hair with a switchblade. This happened because the Socs noticed that he was all alone.
Then there 's the Greasers, who live poorly and get blamed for most of the things that go down in the city. Ponyboy, and Johnny, two Greasers, that at first, clang to the fact that they hated Socs. All they wanted to do was fight the other gang to look tough and earn respect. In the beginning of the story, Ponyboy wishes he looked tough.
Ponyboy and Randy at first dislike one another very much, because there on opposite sides of one another. One evening, the greasers went to the movies, Ponyboy and his buddy Two-bit tried to pick up Cherry and Marcia, but the boys didn’t know that Marcia was Randy’s girl.
