The Plastic Flamingo: A Natural History

In 1936 Georgia O’Keefe’s used oil on canvas to create a painting titled, “Deer’s Skull with Pedernal.” It was painted in the desert of New Mexico while O’Keefe was living there. It is one of her many works that reflects what she saw during her time there. The first thing the viewer’s eyes are drawn to is the deer’s skull. Skull’s similar to this are also included in “Summer Days” and “Cow’s Skull with Calico Roses.”

Around the world, balloons are being used for parties, releases, and even as gifts. However, these balloons are causing many problems to the environment. First, it causes animals to think it is food. Also, animals are getting tangled in the string of a balloon. Finally, metallic balloons are getting caught in power lines.

Parrothead  or Parrot Head is a commonly used nickname for fans of Jimmy Buffett. Origin of the Term "Parrot Head" The term Parrothead was coined during a Jimmy Buffett concert at the Timberwolf Ampitheater outside Cincinnati, Ohio. At that show, Jimmy commented about everyone wearing Hawaiian shirts and parrot hats who keep coming back to see his shows, just like Deadheads. Timothy B. Schmit, a current member of the Coral Reefer Band and a former member of both Poco and The Eagles, coined the term "Parrothead".

In her essay “The Plastic Pink Flamingo” Jennifer Price looks at the strange popularity of the popular lawn accessory of the 50s, the plastic flamingo. She talks about the history of flamingos, the color pink, and how the color relates to the flamingo. She criticizes Americans for their laziness and ignorance. She begins the passage by describing the importance of flamingos before the 50s. She begins with a critical tone, she uses italics in the sentence, “First, it was a flamingo.”

Malcolm Muggeridge, a British journalist, once commented to “Never forget that only dead fish swim with the stream.” What the journalist learned was that it is significant to have individualism instead of following the stream. In Jennifer Price’s essay, “The Plastic Flamingo: A Natural History,” Price gives a history about flamingo to emphasize the fact that Americans lack individualism. Price analyzes American culture and American mindset through flamingo by utilizing great diction, sarcastic tone, and examples to build up on her insight. Price begins her essay with excitement.

The Orlando Museum of Art, also known as OMA, is a hub of Central Florida when it comes to pulling in remarkable works of art for the public eye to pay patronage to. Today I visited such a place for the annual Antiques Vintage and Garden Show, which took place between February 19th through the 21st. Scientific Concepts in “The Beak of The Finch” On an island in the middle of a volcanic archipelago, where Darwin first created theories on the idea of evolution, Peter and Rosemary Grant spend twenty years proving that Darwin did not understand the power of evolution. I now understand better how natural selection, hybridization, and adaptation work in the real world. When I first took biology freshman year I didn’t quite understand how natural selection and evolution were real. But, as you read this book you begin to learn that natural selection is not a rare thing nor does it work slow.

Price supports her examination by separating the article into two separate categories: the flamingo and the color pink. The author’s purpose is to point out to the rise in interest of the pink flamingo so that people understand how it shows that Americans do everything they can to prove their wealth. Price appeals to the readers interested in United States culture using the relationship between the pink flamingo and the United States culture.

Culture is the arts and manifestation of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively in society. Over many years, Americans have created their own identity, trends, and traditions furthering American culture. Americans display pride, integrity, determination, and gratitude. Although circumstances force us to drift away from our culture degrading what Americans really stand for, we stay true to our values, which keeps American culture great.
