I decided to study the process of how whisky is made, from start to finish. I visited the local Penderyn distillery, Aberdare situated in Rhondda Cynon Taff on the 2nd October 2014. “In 2007, Penderyn Distillery introduced three new brands: Brecon Five Vodka, Brecon Gin and Merlyn Cream Liqueur. Like Penderyn Single Malt Whisky, all three have won international recognition and are gaining an excellent reputation in the UK and abroad as premium spirits” (Penderyn Whisky, 2008). Each malt bin holds 16 tonnes of barley. The barley when it is ready will then be passed to the malt conveyor. The malt conveyor weighs one and a half tonnes and once it’s reached this weight, the barley will then be passed to the grist mill. The grist mill will take the barley and grind it down to a finer element, so it’s more receptive to the water treatment that Penderyn give it. The barley, using the bucket lift, will then pass to the top, to the malt holder. The process of whisky bottling is a very important step and is crucial in maintaining the whisky’s high quality. The way the whisky is bottled can affect both the alcohol percentage and the taste of the whisky. “Reducing the strength drop by drop with our very own Brecon spring water, we bottle Penderyn wysgi without chill-filtration”. (Penderyn Whisky, 2008). Penderyn distillery does not dilute the whisky during bottling, which is called cask strength bottling, meaning the alcohol percentage stays the same and is much stronger than diluted whisky. The resulting whisky is stored in glass bottles, which do not react with the whisky's flavour. The bottles are filled simultaneously on bottling lines. Each whisky bottle consists of the glass bottle, the cap and the labels. The Penderyn high quality whisky bottles are packed into paper boxes, which are then packed into large cardboard boxes ready for shipping around the world. Around 2012 the Brewery realized that its return on its assets did not reflect on the product that the company was selling nor did it reflect on the potential net profit of its market. Since then the Brewery’s marketing and advertising strategy has increased its profitability and surpassed its main competitor in the liquor industry in St. Vincent, Gonsalves Liquor. This was also partly due to the company attaining distributorship for Remy V.O.S.P and Gonsalves loosing distributorship of Corona.
Staff member S.D approached writer with concerns that J.C had been drinking on property. Staff member S.D saw J.C outside the property line and felt that he may have been intoxicated. Writer approached J.C outside and asked what he had done today and he began to ignore the questions and speak about biblical aspects and people who he knew that were actually biblical people. Writer asked J.C again about his day and J.C mentioned that he had been outside walking around the property all day because he was not allowed inside. When writer asked J.C why he was not allowed inside he said that forces above would not let him in because he had been caught reading the bible.
Due to rum’s reputation for lasting long voyages, and the harsh climate in the first few American colonies, Jamestown, Virginia, and the two Puritan holding ships, the Arbella and the Mayflower made it so that rum and other spirits became a necessary drink in Early American life. Additionally, it is said that rum specifically has helped us break out of the British hold and gain independence, due to the colonists’ dependence on these drinks. One of the first occurrence that had sparked the beginnings of rebellion in these colonists, occurred in 1733 when the British decided to place a tax on the importing of foreign molasses due to the New England distillers’ loyalty to buying molasses from French sugar plantations, and the fact that the French were beating the English in the sugar market. The British didn’t correctly enforce this act, and smuggling sugar became normal to the colonists, creating a relationship where the American colonists grew resentful and had little respect for the British government, while the British didn’t see it as a personal attack on them, but as a professional decision to create more revenue.
The water at the bottom makes an airtight seal and this causes the water to raise until the pressure is the same as the outside pressure.
The machine was powered by a hand crank that turned two cylinders with teeth on it. One cylinder would separate the seeds from the cotton and the other cylinder would pull the cotton into a separate compartment (Whitney, 2014). It was important to separate the seeds into a different compartment because they also had economic value, but nowhere in comparison to that of cotton. The seeds were used in cottonseed oil that was used in the production of candy, cooking, cattle feed and paper (Woods, 2009).
Further, it was important for us to identify our customer(s) as the whole operations and marketing strategies revolved around this key decision.
