Post-secondary education is imperative, considering the fact that those who obtain some form of higher education are less likely to be unemployed or live in poverty. The social issue that plagues my community most is the low enrollment of students at post-secondary institutions. Having a higher education is one of the key components of a healthy, stable, and successful life. Nonetheless, students shy away from a post-secondary education for several reasons, including tuition costs, lack of encouragement to attend a college/university, difficulty level, and the chance to earn more money without attending college. Because of society’s lenient standards, higher education is becoming progressively irrelevant to students. Although not everyone attends college, having a higher education will better prepare one for corporate America, create a well-rounded individual, and increase one’s chances of getting a lucrative job …show more content…
To fulfill our mission, we will provide numerous scholarship opportunities, both merit and non-merit based, utilize constructive resources and tutors to better the things colleges look for (i.e., standardized testing and essays), assist students with building impeccable resumes, and require that each student complete community service which will also satisfy the expectations of many colleges. By doing so, students will not have excuses for not attending any institution. If my program is successful, I would like to attempt to get a bill passed that requires each state to have at least two programs similar to the one that I plan to create. In order to change America, we must build an empire of organizations across the world that support the need for higher education. Moreover, this will result in more students attending colleges and be able to live a healthy, stable, and successful
In the article, “Should Everyone Go to College,” authors, Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill’s, published by the Brookings Institution, discusses the benefits of a college education. The article begins by mentioning the arguments related to the requirement of having a college degree while entering the middle class in the United States. Having a college degree reminds people that higher education is the best advancement humans can make to allow them to make more money in their lifetimes, rather than if they just had a high school education. A fact that does not get much attention is not all college graduates, or college degrees, are equal. Even though Owen and Sawhill focus, in general, alternative career paths may result in equally lucrative

The Value of a College Degree Having a college degree is arguably one of the most important things you can achieve in your lifetime. In today’s society, it is getting much more difficult to survive without one. Most places of business that offer substantial wages and benefits require some sort of college degree. This is a problem for most people in the United States due to the fact that only 17% of the U.S. population has earned a college degree (Odland).
All your life you are told you need to go to college to be successful. In reality college is a chance to be successful but, doesn’t mean that you will be. In his article “Americas Most Overrated Product” Marty Nemko talks about college student statistics stating, "College is a wise choice for far fewer people than are currently encouraged to consider it” (527). Nemko states, “Among high school students who graduated in the bottom forty percent of their classed, and whose first institutions were four-year colleges, two thirds had not earned diplomas eight years later” (523). People who end up getting college diplomas hardly ever work in the career that they have a degree in, let alone can get jobs that require a degree.
Many people feel it is beneficial to invest money on a college education. In most cases, earning more money depends on the field one chooses to enter after graduating from college. Most employers today want to see an applicant have some sort of higher education when applying for jobs as this has changed from the past. As there are many paths one can take to be successful a college education is the most traditional idea of how to live the “American Dream”. Dreams of attending college, getting married, and starting a family are the typical persons aspirations.
People being educated can be a great influence to people in today’s society. Charles Murray believe that a college degree is like a “a price ticket for employees”. The two reasons Murray says is that “employees do not value what students learned, just that the student has a degree” the other reason is “employees do not even look at applicants who have no college degree”. College is beneficial and plays a big part because we can gain more knowledge and learn how to be a responsible young adult and about our own
Furthermore, if someone wants a well paying job college is beneficial. “74% say their college education was very useful in helping them
The importance of a college degree College, the word that you here most about when you go to interview for jobs. In the article Even Cashier Pays Off by David Leonhardt, he states that going to college is a good investment in life. I agree with David Leonhardt’s claim that having a college degree can benefit you through a career. Having a degree pay more than a high school diploma. Families expect their children to have a future with a good paying job and a degree that can last for a life time.
For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.
Not only does college increase one’s possibility of higher earnings, furthermore his or her skills will be enhanced by simply attending. Owen and Sawhill state that, “Research suggests that additional education improves overall wellbeing by affecting things like job satisfaction, health, marriage, parenting, trust, and social interaction” (pg. 210/para. 3). In fact, college can help an individual manage his or her time, money and also help with problem solving, as well as social interaction. America has come a long way in its education system. It is easier now, more than ever, for people of any race or gender to get an education. However, it is arguable that the educational system does not do its job to prepare students to become successful young adults. There are many flaws in the order of education, which causes students to worry more about satisfying others with test scores and academics rather than actually preparing them for the real world. While the educational system does prepare students for the academic stress of college, it does not qualify students to become young, successful adults and survive in the real world.
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated makes people better, and happier in the future and sometimes even in better health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is good for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you 're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’”
Throughout a student’s time spent in the classroom, higher education is emphasized as a resource that provides a higher state of living following the acquisition of a degree. Thus, the recent drop in enrollment rates is enough to raise alarm for individuals. The OECD, or Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, released a graph demonstrating the rates at which students within participating nations, including the United States, pursued higher education. America, while having a low rate of individuals who did not graduate with a high school diploma, had an almost equal rate of those who did graduate with a high school diploma and those who earned at least a two-year degree in college (OECD). Compared to other developed and first-world nations, the United States’ rates in regard to college attendance are significantly fewer than others.
Our society treats a college education as a pathway to success. It is seen as a way to get the right job, an amazing salary, and the perfect life. Everyone wants it, but yet, not everyone can have it. This is because of the rising cost of higher education. This is a very important problem because students across the country are not able to afford the costs of college, and therefore cannot receive the education that they not only want, but need in order to excel.
