The Pros And Cons Of The American Dream

Although seen as one dream of self prostration and wealth, the American Dream differs from person to person. As many people come to find out,“Wealth, rank, or imposing name counted for nothing,” (Source E). Society implements the idea of wealth and riches to impose self value; however, it is not money that makes a person happy. Riches and fame only last a certain amount of time, and if that it taken, a person will not have anything left. The American Dream suggests that any status of a person can bring themselves from their social class and make something of themselves; therefore, most infer this means money.

Since the beginning of time in the United States, the idea of the American Dream has had a heavy influence on society. According to Document C, American Dream is defined as earning enough money to be happy, obtaining a worry-free lifestyle, and running in a high social circle. While working Americans still hold on to the hope of the American Dream, individuals from other countries often move to the United States with the hope that they too may have a piece of the pie. Despite the novelty and allure of the American Dream, it is nothing more than false hope.

The American dream is the belief that individuals who work hard will be successful. However not all wealthy individuals worked hard for their money such as inheritance, luck, and illegal means. In contrast there are many hard working americans that are just barely getting by and hardly able to support themselves. Whereas a person doesn't have to have all the wealth or materialistic items to keep themselves happy. The American dream is a false concept and should not be pursued because the pursuit of materialistic things can be consequential.

Over time, the American Dream has changed drastically. It used to be working harder to earn a better place in life. It was working hard order to earn a better place in life, as it should be. However, in today 's society for most Americans the Dream is earning that higher place in life while hardly working to truly achieve it. The American Dream seems to have different interpretations in the different types of people, for Americans, they believe in earning a lot while not working hard for it, for many immigrants, they still believe in working for what they desire.

The American dream is to start your life with little to no money and work your way into making a liveable salary. The American dream is often thought of by immigrants, many immigrants move to the U.S. thinking they follow the American dream. In the book The Great Gatsby, James Gatsby the mysterious wealthy character who dropped out of college and started his life as a young man. Gatsby could be compared to the immigrants in the thought of the American dream.

The American Dream is a set of ideas which includes each person’s opportunity to follow their dream of achieving a future and own happiness. The meaning of success in one or other way is to be rich. Everyone wants to improve their future, America is where everyone can equally get opportunities to improve ones’ future. America gives people an opportunity to dream of bettering their lives. Many people move to America dreaming of a better future, because no matter the race, everyone is given equal opportunities.

“The term “American Dream” is used in many ways, but it essentially is an idea that suggests that anyone in the U.S. can succeed through hard work and has the potential to lead a happy, successful life.” (McMahon). The American Dream, according to Google, is everybody can achieve wealth and through hard work, determination, and good fortune. For most people, the American Dream is for lower class people trying to climb the social ladder to be considered upper class.

The American dream is an illusion that is deeply implanted in the minds of the people, it sets a bar for life achievement and offers hope to work hard to achieve their dreams. As for Americans, they are raised in a society to where they are expected to make lots money and to have a healthy family. After all in our society success is largely based off positions of power and financial stability. For example, in The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there were multiple interpretations of the ideal American dream in the 1920s. In the 1920s, due to the growth of materialism, people advertised and fancied the power of money to fulfilling their dreams.

The Problem with the American Dream According to the history books, the widely-known expression “the American Dream” was originally coined by James Truslow Adams in 1931. It was first described in Adams’s book “The Epic of America” as “...not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain the fullest stature of which they are innately capable.” Over the years, America has become more egalitarian, but much must be done until there is true equality. Although the concept of the American Dream has always been believed to be open to everyone, throughout American history it has only been continuously accessible to the upper-class majority.

American Dream James Truslow Adams, in his book which was written in 1931 and called “ The Epic of America” wrote about American dream, that American dream is about being richer and living in better life. Also that American dream is more materialistic, that people work a lot of hours to gain things which they want to have. Such as luxury cars, big houses. They want to be wealthy, rich and have all expensive things and live in a world of money and wealth.

Why is the “American Dream” not taken advantage of? Do we get blinded by love so easily in this country that we forget what we actually came for? The American dream is a desire for improving our way of life such as achieving goals to have riches, a high education, and material goods. Parents leave their countries of origin so their kids can have a better living environment, and sometimes even bring them along so they can get a higher education. I couldn’t believe Mago, Carlos, Leonardo, and Betty did not take advantage of being in the land of opportunity.
