Another character is Lindsey. Lindsey is introduced early on in the support group with Ben. Lindsey was abusing the prescriptions Vicodin and OxyContin. Lindsey explains that she felt that OxyContin was her one true love and that she would do it until her nose bled. She describes that after all she developed a tolerance to these drugs and in order to feel better again she moved onto heroin. She explains that she never thought she would be “one of those people” and claimed that she never saw herself taking it that far. Eventually, Lindsey says she became dependent on heroin and even lost her job and custody of her child as a result. Lindsey struggled with her addiction for quite some time, but in 2011, she became clean and stopped using drugs. The first was present in the Recovery Café. The Recovery Café was a support group that each of the main characters of the film attended. The leader of the group facilitated open group discussion, in which each member had the opportunity to talk about their substance abuse. The women who organizes and facilitates this group serves as an important support system and even promotes those in the group to lean on one another for support. The next person was Briana, and she is the chemical dependency counselor that worked with Yvonna. Briana was actually a substance abuser herself, and has now dedicated her life to helping others who struggle with the same issues. Briana is Yvonna’s support system throughout her struggles. Finally, there is a women named Maureen, who is a support addiction administrator at an outpatient treatment facility. Drug addiction is a consuming mental illness and it makes you lose sight of who and what is truly important in life, just as these two mothers did. Both these pieces of text are great examples of the theme Hopkins tried to convey through the book, the horrors that drug use can bring, how quickly your life can spiral out of control, and how even though you know in your mind that all of this hardship is brought on by these drugs you’ve gotten to a point where quitting seems impossible. Augusten Burroughs, started off from being one of the best advertising suffers from alcoholisms and his book goes into great deal of his journey that eventually led to his recovery. Burroughs, divides his memoir into two parts. In the first part of his book, consists of four chapter. With the help of her boss she attended an addiction clinic, where she embarks upon her road to recovery, which was successful. She became sober and stayed with the help of a sponsor named Val. At the age of 27, she went the a community college, even though she never finished high school. It took her five and a half years to complete a two year program.
She is an instigator and initiates much of the smoking and drinking that the characters get involved in. She takes her problems away by consuming herself in those activities. At one point in the book, she even admits to Miles that her reason for drinking is due to her unhappiness.
