The Red Scare In America

In the 1950’s, America just came out of World War 2. The economy was prosperous, many soldiers were creating families, and communism was a widespread fear for Americans. The Red Scare was the fear of the threat of communism arising in America. The Federal government took many measures to make sure communism didn’t spread in America. In 1949 there was word of Russia making nuclear tests.

The Red Scare was really what the name says it is a “Scare of the Red”. The red was Russia or communism. Right after World War I and the Revolution in Russia, the United States was overcome with fear. There was wide spread fear of communisis and socialists. The time frame was in the 1900s between 1919 and 1920.

By the end of the Cold War, Americans analyzed each other for traces of communism. When a guilty culprit arose, Americans stripped them of freedom and bound them to life in a cell. Fear of subsisting as one of these guilty culprits crept into the lives of Americans, creating the Red Scare (History.com Staff). The Red Scare dared Americans to strive for distinguishing factors between themselves and communists. Soon Americans used the Christian title to rule out any traces of communism against them.

After WWII and during the cold war the fear of a nuclear conflict helped to raise the crusade of the second red scare that was also known as McCarthyism (Schultz, 2013). The campaign was built on the concept of fighting against communism within the United States. However, this movement extended its influence by lessening civil rights and ending the political warfare for any and all groups or individuals no matter their position. President Truman fearful of allegations that there were communists within the US government, implemented the process of investigating the background of all public employees and would not hire anyone that was deemed a security risk. In the spring of the early 50s John McCarthy would go around America accusing innocent people of being communist spies. This era would be named McCarthyism and the red scare was also part of this era. This would set the stage for a story down the road. The crucible by Arthur Miller is an allegory for the red scare in the McCarthy era because of the false accusations, general hysteria among the townspeople, and proving of injusticing by authority/ accuser. Enter John McCarthy who first started his false accusations of supposed communists in America in the state of Wheeling, Virginia.

Fueled by the anti-Communist actions of Congress, particularly a Senator from Wisconsin by the name of Joseph McCarthy, the movement escalated and many people lost their jobs as a result of various blacklists. Congressional hearings, both in front of HUAC and McCarthy Senate committee were a study in organized persecution. The actions taken during the "Red Scare" were eventually given the general name McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence.

No one can deny that the Red Scare and communism have affected America in multiple negative ways. In 1924, Congress was considerate and voted to give a bonus to all the WW1 veterans. They agreed to $1.25 for each day overseas and $1.00 for each day served in the United States. The trick was that the payment would not be made until 1945. Then 1932 the nation had slipped into the Great Depression and the unemployed veterans wanted their money as soon as they could get it. When they went into the Great Depression they made a camp right across the Capital to prove a point to the Congress.

In a news article published during the Red Scare, the author describes the Communist red flag as symbolizing “defiance of law, order, and constitutional government. It is an insult to the stars and stripes.” It also states, “There is no room in this country for any flag but our own.” (source) The article goes on to say that the federal government must do whatever it takes to eradicate any forms of communism.

This was fueled by events such as the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and a series of bombings in the US by anarchist groups. The Red Scare had significant impacts on American society, politics, and economy. People were terrified of communism spreading to the United States, so when accusations started floating around everyone would believe them. McCarthy accused people of communist behavior, although many were falsely accused, no one knew better than to think they were guilty because of how scared they were of communism spreading. This resembles how certain characters were accused of witchcraft in The Crucible. The Red Scare caused nationwide hysteria just how the Salem Witch Trials caused hysteria to the people of Salem.
