Deep In the Lies
White lies tend to be known as a minor or harmless lie. Everyone are all liars. People lie to others, and they even lie to themselves. No one can ever say they never told a lie but if they do then that is the biggest lie they have told. Starting from a young age to growing up, everyone is programed with the message that honesty is key, from parents, teachers, and society itself. In today’s society, white lies are often told because it is a common behavior that is accepted and everyone is so use to it, so it would just be a normal thing to do. People tell white lies for so many different reasons for example, they are trying to get out of trouble, avoid becoming the bad guy or mean person for actually telling the truth

She did very well explaining the danger in white lies, which made it eye opening how white lies can make a situation worse or even damage someone’s life. It may seem like white lies are okay and nothing will happen but people need to realize that it can be very damaging for themselves and others. Someone telling a white lie just to get themselves out of trouble can eventually get themselves in a deeper situation. They can hurt their relationship with others because they cannot be trusted once the truth comes out. They can also give themselves a bad look because they will be known as a liar. It is much easier to just tell a simple lie but by telling these lies, it is just hurting or upsetting the person that is getting told the lies once they find out the truth. It may seem okay now for people to tell white lies instead of telling the truth, but it is the wrong path to go because they will eventually hurt …show more content…
It can really damage both people and maybe ruin the relationship in the process. In the article “The Reprehensibility of the White Lie,” Pier states, “The most important element of a white lie is its destructiveness; the act of telling one hurts both the receiver and sender.” For example a wife may ask, “Do I look fat in this dress?” The husband may lie just because he is in a rush to go eat so he will say, “You look fine.” He may have gotten away with that simple lie but he just may continue with lying just because he was not caught. Once his wife catches on, she will come to a point that she will doubt anything he says to her. Was he really working late or was he actually with someone else? It may make her feel as if she was not worthy of being told the truth. At the time of answering her question, he had a quick and easy answer in that moment but in the long run, he took the first step into hurting his marriage. Trust is an important element to have in a relationship, and when the trust is not there anymore the relationship is falling apart while both people are hurting.
Telling white lies can do so much to a person, like affecting their reputation. People want to feel powerful and have a good standing with others. In the article “Why Those Little White Lies Do More Damage Than You Think” by Katherine Schreiber she states, “We often lie because we want another person to love us—we’re trying to protect
Lying diminishes trust between human beings. If people generally did not tell the truth, life would become very difficult, as nobody could be trusted and nothing a person heard or read could be trusted Everyone would have to find everything out for himself. Lying is bad because it treats those who are lied to as a means to achieve the liar’s purpose, rather than as a valuable end in themselves. Lies are bad for a person's health also, It can cause a person's brain to get used to lying about things and to get in a habit that is not one that a person needs to get
In The Way We Lie by Stephanie Ericsson telling such little white lies is done in order to save someone's feelings from being hurt. Though it could also be argued the person themselves have alternative motives, such as not wanting to be seen as a bad friend or person. While these actions are more or less admirable, it is still nevertheless lying. While Donald Trump's motive for using artifice, is simple, he wants the population to like him and believe he is a good president. His motive are more narcissistic than most, wanting only to be liked, makes him a manipulative liar.
Throughout adolescence we are taught that lying is not good, not even a little white lie. But what if this is not true? What if we can benefit from these lies? “A lie told often enough becomes the truth” (Lenin Brainyquote). We see white lies in our everyday lives, but some people use it for the benefit of themselves, rather than others who lie to benefit the people they care about.
In the real world, however, white lies can benefit your social life instead of hinder it. Ultimately, in my experience, lying is not that good unless it’s to cushion the blow of anything. In Acts 1 and 2 of The Crucible, people are often motivated to be dishonest because they do not want to suffer. In Act 1, Tituba lies because she does not want to be hung for her.
However, it gave false hope to the household what one day he might come home. Furthermore, each lie is different some are bigger than others, but even the smallest of lies can do the most damage. Ericsson (1992) says, "The white lie assumes that the truth will cause more damage than a simple, harmless untruth" (p. 160). Telling a white lie is unnecessary and can lead to arrogance.
Stephanie Ericsson justifies the habits of lying in “The Ways We Lie” using firsthand experiences and solid metaphors. Essentially, Take into consideration before you lie, because it could be at someone else's
She defines a white lie as a vote of no confidence, or a liar deciding what is best for the person they are lying to. Many people don’t realize
In the Ted Talk “How to Spot a Liar” By Pamela Meyer, She spoke about the tells of a liar and why people lie. Meyers had two truths, Truth #1 lying is a cooperative act. The lie has no power until the receiver believes the lie. Everyone who has been lied to has agreed to be lied too, for example when a lady asks her husband if she looks fat in a certain clothing item. Both he
Nearly everyone has lied at least once in our lifetime, but for what reason? The concept of lying is nothing new in fact, everyone lies are all very different. Most of time, lie has a motivation behind it. Everyone and even including the characters from “The Crucible” have different reasons for lying depends on their own purpose/goal. The decision to lie isn't without a purpose, it always has a motivation for goal in mind as with the connections between Bhattacharjee’s article “Why We Lie: The Science behind our complicated relationship with the truth” and the characters from “The Crucible”share/support the concept of lying for a purpose.
Lies are mentioned for bountiful reasons; lies can be invaluable to others or used for a greedy, egoistical reason. No matter the motive, lies are frequently told everyday. Even in the concentration camps of World War II, there were no exceptions. In the novel Night, Elie Wiesel is caught naturally lying to mislead his relative, Stein even though Wiesel has a chance to tell the truth, he decides against it. Even though he lied, I believe that Wiesel's lie was morally right.
This quote says that lying happens frequently; no one can resist it. It also says lying is deadly, which is also shown in the Bible within the story of Adam and Eve, when the serpent lies to Eve, convincing her to consume the sacred fruit. In modern society, lying is a common practice. A person may lie protect themselves, or to gain something wanted. This may be due to religious diversity or the decay of respect in society.
Ericsson defines the white lie as a little common lie we use it in our daily basic. A lie does more good that the truth; it is a lie that when one is lying in order to protect the other person. She gives an example as giving someone a compliment
On the one hand, I think lying is not always the answer; I personally avoid telling a lie because if you are going to lie you have to be carefully thinking about the consequences that those bring. I know that big lies can be a problem. For example, hiding your relationship with someone saying that you are single when you are not. That would bring so many consequences for yourself and for others too. That is why it is better to not tell big lies because that would affect you and other people negatively.
Some parents may lie to their children because they look up to them, and they see it as disappointing their children if they know the truth (Bronson, 2008). With lying, they are not exposed to losing the trust of their children, and they see this as an easy route since
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, honesty is the quality of being fair and trustful. I have always wondered why people succeed and are considered of great importance. Many tend to succeed through illegal paths, which will vanish faster than they think. Real businessmen build their heritage slowly, step by step through honest actions and decisions. A person who’s honest is not weak or fragile, instead, dares to practice honesty, to be considered trustworthy, and to be transparent in everything they do.
