The focus of this paper is the core concept that traumatic events may cause changes in one’s family life, reminders the traumatic experience, and other adversities in relation to the trauma. Amarika, an 18-month-old girl, was with her mother in the park when a stray bullet from gang violence hit Makisha, Her mother. This initial event caused many changes in Amarika’s life. Makisha had complications from surgery and had to stay in the hospital for an extended period of time. When Makisha was to return home, the family also faced the distress of her rehabilitation.

Women are known as the forgotten offender. Within the educational and vocational programs there is definitely a lack between male programs and programs for female offenders. Women typically have traditional educational and vocational programs such as classes on home economics and parenting classes versus men who have programs that lead to skills that can be related to jobs. Another forgotten thing is mini correctional facilities policies do not understand the importance of the bond between mother and child. For this there is a fear that most women who give birth in jail believe that the long separation period the mother and the child may not be able to reconnect with each other.

Lastly, it is not a good idea to send a child to jail, because when the child gets released from jail the child will not be able to handle the interaction with people after being locked away for so long if they do get possiable for

A 2006 study supported the notion that greater exposure to childhood adverse situations were associated with behavioral problems as well as mental health problems (Daniel, 2007). Incarcerated women have a higher incidence of mental health disorders than the general population. For example, 12 percent of females in the general population have symptoms of a mental health disorder compared to 73 percent of females in state prison, 61 percent in federal prisons, and 75 percent in local jails (Daniel, 2007). Most incarcerated women do not receive treatment or assistance for these problems and are unlikely to meet goals of mental stability without the help of prison resources. The stories of the ladies in Maryland only women prison allowed me to see the reality of what women are truly facing and dealing with. These women have been fighting with their self for so long to come and find them self-having to face time behind bar. Trying to figure out how they’re going to find some type of peace and comfortable with in such a small cans cold area with no one to help through the emotions that there feeling. In order to assure that the health needs of incarcerated pregnant women are met by prison and jail administrations it is important for them to know the profile of these women before they enter the facility. These prisons should have resources, staff, and information ready for these special groups of women. Since these women represent a small portion of the facility, it may be difficult to provide special healthcare needs. However, these women should not be treated as if they were a standard inmate when in fact they are not. Courts in certain states claim that pregnancy does not constitute as a serious medical need, basically meaning that being pregnant is not an illness or disability (UCLA Women Law Journal, 2010).

Children need to feel secure and loved and need supervision and guidance. If a parent cannot be present to care for and look after their children, it can cause the child to feel afraid and they may act out or behave in ways that they would not if the parent were living with them. Several studies have found that a significant number of children of incarcerated parents struggle with a variety of childhood problems that have long term implications for adult adjustment (Kjellstrand, 2012). Even if children visit parents in while they are incarcerated, the physical and emotional distance can become a strain on their relationship. I think more should be done to encourage courts to take families into consideration in sentencing and correctional facilities should have better resources for incarcerated parents to maintain healthy relationships with their children.

Granting children, the right to visit their incarcerated mothers is a contentious topic with both sides having strong claims and counterclaims. Terrance Bogans does an outstanding job in his essay, “Being Mommy Behind Bars: The Psychological Benefits of Child Visitation with Incarcerated Mothers” addressing why children should be allowed to visit their incarcerated mothers, citing many reasons and using many argumentative components. Bogans has an explicit thesis in the conclusion “Child visitation must be increased in order to alleviate the psychological strains that take place during incarceration” (15). Bogans uses this clearly stated thesis to tell his main point and to address his opposition. The author’s purpose is to convince readers that children and incarcerated mothers have a right to see each other and no one should stop that.

Both mother figures in his life fail to fulfill their duties and provide basic guidance. Today, it is common to see careless mothers who fail to train their children due to various circumstances, this takes an immense toll on the child mentally and physically. It is important to note, that children are vulnerable and innocent, as it is only expected that a mother will groom, nurture and provide for their child. However, this is not the case for all children, a mother's failure to do the aforementioned can lead to permanent consequences and destroy the familial

Firstly, a child may have an initial reaction such as post-traumatic symptoms, painful emotions, and cognitive distortions. Secondly, children develop coping strategies that are aimed to help increase their safety or reduce their pain. This is an important concept as children find it difficult when there is a problem for them to face. I will be analysing how a child and a parent will be affected because of their spouse in Prison. I will be analysing six sources to see what researches have said and what they predict. For a child who is experiencing separation as one of their parent has gone to prison, is a difficult time as they have not been away from one of their parent before.
