The book A Shopkeeper’s Millennium: Society and Revivals in Rochester, New York, 1815-1837 touches upon many of the social, political, religious and economical changes that occurred in Rochester, New York from1815 to 1837.The author Paul E. Johnson, organizes the data collected into sections to help the reader better understand certain aspects of the different stages of the revival. He starts the book off with a man named Charles Finney traveling down the Erie Canal to the town of Rochester, NY. The Erie Canal places Rochester, NY in the center of the trade markets, which in turn pushes the town’s craftsmen to develop a new style of business. John Locke’s Two Treatises of Government is echoed in the Declaration of Independence, particularizing the importance and necessity of the “consent of the governed”. Seventeen years before James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights enumerating “the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances,” John Dickinson, author of the Articles of Confederation, wrote his Petition to the King, a formal list of injustices committed by King George III. The inherent right to peacefully express discontent with the actions of the government is the cornerstone of American democracy. In a letter to James Madison in 1789, Thomas Jefferson suggested the Constitution be rewritten every nineteen years.

In Interpretation A, Krout states that the power of the evangelical Protestantism was the greatest factor in the temperance movement. While there is validity in this statement as through congregationalism, evangelical Protestantism had a large following and therefore can get a large group of people to support prohibition. However Krout also mentions that an economical factor was often the reason why people became supporters of prohibition. Krout also mentions that the economical factors included increased taxation and reduced production. Around this time big business men like John Rockefeller put large amounts of money into the temperance movement as they felt it would benefit them as they would have more efficient workers.

1920’s DBQ The 1920’s were a period of tension between the traditionalists and modernists. The tension between these two groups was aroused by the economical advancements, social developments, and cultural changes in the 1920s. These tensions were manifested by the economic outburst and the passing of certain laws.

The amount of consequences and repercussions of drinking can itself be described in lengthy novels: ranging from minor things such as short terms effects that entail impaired motor movement and impaired judgement, to more dangerous things such as alcohol poisoning and liver cancer. With that being said, on the other side of the spectrum, the prohibition of alcohol also had numerous cons to it, to be stated next. The agenda of temperance often can be examined and perceived as something that will benefit all citizens. Sadly, the prohibition had numerous consequences as well. At first, the temperance movement seemed to have worked, crimes dramatically reduced across the board.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, American society began to focus on the welfare of minority groups. Women’s suffrage and abolition were rooted as deeply as the history of America, but asylum and prison reform sprouted with the Second Great Awakening, a movement that occurred in the early 1800s. The Second Great Awakening was led by religious leaders who advocated for changes in American society through the unity of the American people (Doc. Due to the Second Great Awakening, reform movements were established between 1825 and 1850 in order to represent the changes the people sought for in the issues of slavery, suffrage, and asylum and prison reform. The social aspect of the abolition movement led to the visible democratic changes in society and politics.

Many reform movements between 1825 and 1850 sought to expand democratic ideals by advocating many social and political changes including movements to prohibit alcoholic beverages, to increase public education, and to support rights for women. Movements within society were encouraged through the church as well as harmony.

The “Progressive Movement was an early-20th century reform movement seeking to return control of the government to the people, to restore economic opportunity, and to correct injustices in American life.” (Danzer R54). The Progressive Era marked the end of the “Gilded Ages” and a start of a new era. The Progressive Era started in 1901 in the United States (Fagnilli 26). There were many major reforms in the Progressive Era that altered and advanced American society.

Since the birth of the US through the early nineteenth century, the primary goal of all citizens and governmental leaders was to establish a solidified nation and to secure the laws and rights outlined in the Declaration of Independence and later, the US Constitution. Jumping forward to the 1820s, the young country faced numerous challenges to the prosperity of its citizens, bringing forth a slew of reform movements to do just that. During the 1920’s alcohol was beginning to be viewed as a problem. Many groups complained about the various effects it had on culture. Women complained that their husbands would get drunk and beat their wife or children. In the business world managers and company owners complained that alcohol was the cause of men coming in late and coming in drunk or hungover which directly affected

The Temperance Movement, starting in 1808, was the first significant attempt to outlaw alcohol. Members of the movement believed alcohol was unconstitutional and caused family violence and crime. In 1900, Carry Nation, who believed saloons were associated with gambling, prostitution, and violence, organized the destruction of many saloons and was arrested. Later in twentieth century came the Prohibition Movement. Supporters thought the poor were wasting their limited money at saloons, and industrial leaders believed a ban on alcohol would increase productivity of workers.

It began in the early 1800s because people worried about public health, morality, and social reform. Lyman Beecher, a Presbyterian minister, was one of the first people to lead the movement. He said that drinking alcohol was bad and could harm families. Then in 1826, he created the American Temperance Society to support not drinking. The Temperance Movement grew bigger in the 1840s and 1850s.

The country was trying to control America’s alcohol problems by law. The ban on alcohol worsened America’s alcohol problem, in fact, it did quite the opposite of its intention. All caused by prohibition, America had an increased crime rate, death rate, and to top it off, America was losing slathers of money.

During the 19th century, socioeconomic change was occurring rapidly. Industrialization was gaining speed, economic expansion was swiftly spreading, and urbanization was taking over. All of these changes also brought with it new social expectations. Alcohol, which used to be a major part of society and widely accepted, was now frowned upon and seen as a damper on employees. This all gave way to the Temperance movement.

The ratification of the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution introduced a new period in American history most commonly known as Prohibition. It was the result of a nationwide temperance movement during the 1910s and ‘20s. The enactment of Prohibition led to a large increase of organized crime, the government lost millions of dollars, and there was corruption among government officials and police officers. The Anti-Saloon League (ASL) played a major role in the temperance movement against alcohol, starting late 1800s to early 1900s, with its establishment in 1893. The ASL consisted mostly of women, along with a few men.
