The Unredeemed Captive (1995), a non-fiction book by American author and historian John Putnam Demos, is the true story of a kidnapping that shocked colonial Massachusetts. England and France are at war over dueling claims to the Spanish throne, and the conflict has spread to the North American colonies where the Mohawk tribes have become aligned with the French. On February 29th, 1704, the war comes to the small New England town of Deerfield. The town is brutally attacked by a Mohawk raiding party and set on fire. Some of the residents are killed and scalped, some escaped, and others are captured and taken back to the territory of New France in what is now Canada. The target of the raid was Deerfield’s prominent reverend, John Williams, who was planned to be traded for the French captain Jean Baptiste Guyon, who was currently being held by the English. The Williams home was raided, and the two youngest children were scalped. Williams, his wife, and five other children ranging from fourteen to four were captured along with a hundred and twelve other Deerfield residents. The Williams children were scattered among the Indian tribes, and the captives were eventually sold to the French and traded in exchange for captives. Three years later, John Williams was able to make his way back and negotiate for the release of his children. During that time, she would become a grandmother, and settle even more into her life in Canada with the natives. The idea of her leaving her native family would become even more remote. However, eventually she and her brother would make contact again, via a letter sent and translated to Stephen shortly before her seventy-fifth birthday. She asked for news of his family and of his health, and stated that they would likely never meet face-to-face again, because she had become too old to travel extensively. They never met in person again, although Stephen lived to the age of ninety and Eunice lived to eighty-five. Despite their infrequent communications, they did form a bond that would outlive them, and their descendants kept in touch deep into the nineteenth century. Their communications became an invaluable resource for the author as he worked to recreate the story of the woman who became known as the unredeemed captive. Thomas Putnam 's loss of inheritance and authority instigates his desire to punish fellow community members. Putnam reveals himself as a "man with many grievances" (13) and shows that his "vindictive nature was demonstrated long before witchcraft began" (14). Prior to the witchcraft trials, Putnam experiences multiple personal conflicts that created a fiery desire for vengeance. These conflicts include the community failing to recognize his land inheritance and selecting Parris as minister over his brother-in-law. Although the alleged perpetrators in these events had little involvement in his diminished stature, Putnam concludes that "his own name and the honor of this family had been smirched by the village", which caused him to "right matters
Option D With the incline of Hysteria throughout the village of salem the so called “Virtuous Puritans” became backstabbing in some cases greedy folk who were only in it for themselves. From Putnam to Parris they were profiting trying to gain something or save themselves from trial. Putnam himself would just outlandishly accuse many villagers most likely them all innocent just to gain land for his own greed gains. As a side note to keep himself from the danger of the trials.
In reading the Book, The Unredeemed Captive, By John Demos, I found that the relations between the Native Americans, the French and the English were different than I had anticipated. These people groups had many differences in their cultures and also had varying religious, military and family views. The two communities I will be addressing are the British Colony at Deerfield and the Native American and French colony at Kahnawake. Kahnawake was made up of Indians, from different tribes such as the Huron, Iroquois, and Mohawk, to name a few. But not only Indians, they were also in coexistence with the French, as Kahnawake was, a Catholic mission.
Thomas Putnam is a greedy man who is bitter and use to getting his own way, which motivates him to falsely accuse his neighbors of witchcraft. He is a rich man who can afford to buy any land forfeited by a witch. To him the, Salem witchcraft trials, is an opportunity to get rid of his neighbors and take land away from them. In the Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion, John Williams was concerned with both cultural and the religious differentiations. Williams was Puritan and viewed foreign religion, Catholicism, as a danger of his viciousness captors. Williams’s captivity was a ruthless journey of constant abuse and pressure to transform him by the Jesuits and his master into the Indian’s culture. He was bought by the French and upon his arrival to St. Francis, Jesuit tried to force him into Catholicism. Williams battle those and wanted to rescue his children and others from the French Catholic beliefs and the violent cultural ways of the Indians.
Though captivity narratives in the 18th and 19th centuries had great “popularity and prevalence”, many “represented no truth at all.” This reaffirms the notion that such memoirs were no longer produced to tell of personal triumphs but instead to promote political ideas throughout a large community. Yet while these narratives predominated, D’Agata quotes Alice Wright of the Smithsonian Institute as saying that these types of memoirs “‘probably represent the minority of actual Indian captivities.’” However, the majority of captivity stories were not successful owing to the fact that they didn’t excite, scare, or entice the reader. Since the perspective where captivity wasn’t horrible did not play into the notion perpetuated by many other popular writers, it disappeared into the background.
Such stories were regularly utilized as promulgation or propaganda: accordingly, Europeans frequently stereotyped Native Americans as merciless and whites started to see subjugation of African-Americans as detestable. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the two narratives which are A Narrative of the Captivity and The interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equianoa. A Narrative of Captivity by Mary Rowlandson and The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano by Olaudah Equiano are two generally read imprisonment accounts , which, individually, relate the encounters of a grown-up white lady caught by Indians and an eleven-year-old Black male caught for the American slave market. Looking at these two accounts uncovers fascinating similitudes and contrasts and in addition in the encounters and responses of these two prisoners.
Introduction George Jacobs Sr. said, “You tax me for a wizard, you may as well tax me for a buzzard I have done no harm.” Although his words were true, many chose to either believe this hysteria or turn the other way. He died along with many other women and men. This was just the start of the many terrors of the Salem witch trials. Yet if you confessed to being a witch then you had a better chance of living, but if you denied you would automatically get hanged.
King Philips War and Bacon’s Rebellion were two pivotal points in early American history. Ironically, they both shared many similarities between them. There are three main points of discussion in comparison of the two conflicts: 1) why the fighting started, 2) what they were fighting over, and finally 3) who they were fighting against. Each of these conflicts resulted in tragic loss of many lives of settlers and Indians and caused even more tension between the English and the Native Americans.

Putnam is yet another powerful male figure in Salem Betty has taken a grip over in the town. He, in this quote, truly believes that the devil is among the town of Salem based on Betty’s current condition. Reverend Hale, encouraging Tituba to give more names of witches, tells her to look at Betty’s “god- given innocence; her soul is so tender; we must protect her; Tituba; the Devil is out and preying on her like a beast upon the flesh of a pure lamb.
Title Native American Indians of the Revolutionary War Nearly 250 year after the Revolutionary War, there was a mistaken idea that the war was fought only between the British and the 13 British colonies. However, the Native American Indians played a major role in the Revolutionary War. Long before the Revolutionary War was active, around 1772, the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and the Seneca Indians created a nation to become stronger and stop the colonists from taking over their lands. The indians had hoped that their lands would be protected by the British after Joseph Brant was influenced them to help.
The people who preside over the trials are corrupt. People who were accused of witchcraft are wrongfully indicted, and those transgressions must be justified. Danforth is the governor of Massachusetts who thinks of himself as a fair man. Thomas Putnam who has grudges against the people of Salem, and Abigail is a shameless liar who leads the accusations against the people of Salem. What the people of Salem have seen as demonic possessions of the girls is nothing more than an act of deception.
Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano: Comparing Captivity Experiences Americans have been intrigued by captivity novels and works for centuries. It could be the sense of danger and unpredictability that makes them so interesting and popular. Or maybe the idea that captivity was quite possible for readers in previous centuries made captivity narratives popular in Colonial Times. Speaking of Colonial Times, two popular captivity narratives that took place in that era that have many similarities and differences are; A Narrative of the Captivity of Mary Rowlandson and The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano.
What common themes bond together the literary works of the 1800’s? Frederick Douglass and Kate Chopin both realized that people were not being treated fairly and thus it influenced their writing. Through personal experiences and observations Frederick Douglass conveyed how African Americans in My Bondage and My Freedom were treated unfairly. Kate Chopin used the plot to show how women were treated unfairly in “The Story of an Hour”. My Bondage and My Freedom by Frederick Douglass tells of some of the experiences he went through as a slave.
“Condemned to be free,” a quote from Jean- Paul Sartre, a atheistic existentialism philosopher who had a different view on human nature also known as existentialism. Sartre strongly believed that humans were free to create their own nature without a God, and were not made to have a purpose in life (pg. 67). I found this philosopher very interesting because I agree with believing that humans are fully responsible for their own actions. In addition, as Sartre stated, “we must suffer the anguish of own decision making and accept responsibility for its consequences,” which means that even though humans have the right to make their own choices, they also have to be responsible for the pain that comes along with it (pg.67). For example, someone who decides to kill another person out of their own free will.
