In this analysis I want to focus on how Poe’s writing in The Raven progressively gives the reader the feeling that the narrator turns insane. How does he create the progression from a seemingly normal man to an insane one? Firstly I would like to start off with the effects of repeating the last line of each stanza in The Raven. Throughout the poem Poe follows the rhyme scheme ACBCCC ,which puts quite a heavy focus on the last lines of each stanza.

What gives the reader that feeling of being on the edge of their seat? Why would he want the reader to anticipate what’s going to happen next? That is how the author expresses tension. The author does this by using literary devices. Edgar Allen Poe builds suspense in “The Black Cat” by using specific literary devices—foreshadowing, allusion, and slow pace.

Poe emphasized the word nevermore to illustrate the depressed and despair mood. The narrator uses, "Nothing more" to comfort himself and ignore his fears. He emphasized this to develop the poem's mystery and darkness. Lastly, Poe uses different word choices to create the mood of the poem.

Edgar Allen Poe creates an atmosphere of suspense in “The Raven” and in “The Pit and Pendulum “making the reader wonder what is going to happen next by creating confusion. The typical gothic style of Poe’s writings is very dark and cold, affecting the narrator both mentally and physically. In both “The Pit and The Pendulum” and “The Raven”, both of the narrators are being tortured. In “The Raven” the narrator is being tortured mentally while in “The Pit and The Pendulum” the narrator is being tortured physically. Poe uses many gothic elements such as setting and supernatural elements making fear one of the most important unifying effects in the narratives.

First, the common theme of “The Raven” is grief,agony, and heartache. With dialogue like “while I pondered,weak and weary”shows that emotion. The narrator is sad about his lost love Lenore. Which is parallel to when Poe’s wife was deadly ill.
