Discussion Questions For The Veldt By Ray Bradbury

Many Americans have pets or children in their household. What do you think would happen if you neglected these things? They would replace you with something else. In the story, "The Veldt", by Ray Bradbury, Mr. and Mrs. Hadley allow technology to replace them as the parents in their child 's lives, but, when they threaten to turn off the nursery, an extremely realistic virtual reality machine, However, then the Hadleys begin to hear familiar screams. However, because the children frequently visit the African Veldt, and watch lions eat things, they decide to turn off the nursery, and go on a vacation.

In both The Veldt and The Pedestrian it shows readers that life can be very difficult at times. As the story continues stuff happens, more advanced machines are being invented and in one story (The Veldt) the kids start to get very attached and don't care about family and work like they once did. To begin with, in The Veldt the parents gave them everything they wanted, some may say they spoiled their children. They would do anything to get what they wanted and to keep this nursery open. In one part it says ¨I sensed that you had spoiled your children more than most.

They use metaphors to help connect their own lives to the lives of others. Whether it is from literary works that they are reading or connecting to each other’s lives. This use is very effective because it helps us to know what is going in the student's lives by connecting with things and sayings that we can understand. Allusions are also a very effective in this piece because it connects the real-life problems that the students are going through with things that everyone can understand. An example of this is when the students compare their lives to the lives of Holocaust survivors.

Throughout the entire novel, the author’s use of literary devices is very clear. These literary devices, specifically similes and personification, help the reader get a better idea of the exact sounds and feelings which will allow them to know what it feels like to be there in that moment. “ I stood there, trying to think of a comeback, when suddenly, I heard a whooshing sound, like the sound you get when you open a vacuum-sealed can of peanuts. Then the brown water that had puddled up all over the field began to move. It began to run toward the back portables, like someone pulled the plug out of a giant bathtub.

In the short story, the parents feel like they have no use as a result of the Happylife Home taking care of the children by itself without the need for their parents. The parents dislike the change of not having to care for their own children, which causes them to feel useless. Although, some disagree and say that the main theme of the story is abandonment. The children were abandoned by their parents and nursery.

After the theatre trip, the friends head home. However, Lavinia senses someone is following her.

“The Veldt”, by Ray Bradbury, is a short story that contains a series of events where the children, Wendy and Peter, are constantly being spoiled with the use of technology. Their parents, George and Lydia, bought a technology filled house, which contains devices that do almost everything for them, including a nursery for the children. The nursery’s walls transform and display different environments, of which reflect one’s thoughts. The children, however, are caught using violent content inside the nursery so their parents threaten to take away all technology, including the nursery. The children become upset, throw temper tantrums, and end up locking their parents in the nursery, left there to die with hungry lions.

“A green lovely forest, a lovely river, a purple mountain, high voices singing, and Rima” (Bradbury 5). This quote shows the extreme change between the hot African veldt, and the mysterious imaginary forest of love and paradise. Imagery is used many times in the story for the same purpose. “The lions on three sides of them, in the yellow veldt grass, padding through the dry straw, rumbling and roaring in their throats” (Bradbury 10) captures the suspense the characters feel and giving it to the reader to make the story more exciting. Imagery is used repetitively to keep giving the senses and suspense to make the story feel real.

They instead have “a tendency toward a slight paranoia here or there, usual in children because they feel persecuted by parents constantly” (Bradbury 7). The theme of death is a driving force throughout the story that exemplifies how technology can cause a tendency toward violence. There is a feeling deep inside the characters, especially the wife and husband, who realize that the way the children behave is not right. The wife, Lydia Hadley, helps her husband begin to see how negatively affected the children have become as a result of technology. It now does everything and “is wife and mother now, and nursemaid”
