In the book The Watsons Go To Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, the protagonist, Byron Watson, a teenager who thinks he is to handsome to be born by his parents, learns to not take everything for granted. Byron was in his hometown, Flint, Michigan, causing lots of trouble; killing a bird with a cookie, lighting fires and the last straw, getting his hair chemically straightened. This caused the whole Watson family to travel to Birmingham, Alabama because they thought their Grandma Sands could straighten Byron out. In Birmingham, he was exposed to the real world of racism whereas in Flint, everyone was the same race. There was violence because they didn't accept different types of people.

This shows that Byron’s says of protecting not only his brother but his family isn’t the most respected way, but he still cares about his family even if he doesn’t act like it. Kenny didn’t believe his grandmother so he went to check it out with Byron and Joey but Byron and Joey were so against the idea to swim in there even Byron.

James and Christopher Collier use My Brother Sam is Dead to influence the hardship and pain and loss of war. Irony convinces Tim to take a neutral stance toward war because of the senseless brutality against Life, Jerry, and Sam.

In the novel “The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963”, there is a character named Byron Watson. Byron is the brother of Kenny Watson and Joetta Watson, and the son of Wilona Watson and Daniel Watson. The Watsons plan to send Byron away to live with his strict grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama due to his dangerous, mischievous, and negative behavior. I strongly agree with this decision for three reasons.

They clearly state reasons why they are against war. The book shows how war divides loyalties within a family. It also shows how war cause huge arguments of generation and the principles versus reality as well. In this book, although both sides of the war are shown, author's Collier and Collier ultimately argue that war is futile.

The American Revolution was a brutal war of principles fought between the Loyalists and Patriots. For example, the Loyalists believed in neutrality and peaceful negotiation; Loyalists were also against treason and the brutality of war. The Loyalists feared loss of land, wealth, and mob rule if they did not obey the kings rules. However, the Patriots believed in the rights of freedom, government, bearing arms, religion, assembly, speech, protesting etc. The Patriots fought for independence because they thought the king treated them unfairly.

War is an evil that can destroy nations, but without it, there is the potential for even more chaos in our imperfect world. Many wicked and corrupt institutions throughout history have been stopped by wars, further advancing society. Detrimental repercussions of combat, such as destroyed homes or lost lives, are justified by the anticipation of a better future. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier, Tim Meeker must decide if war is worth the bloodshed and loss to secure freedom for himself, and for America’s posterity. By the end of the story, the ironic deaths of Ned, Life, and Sam contribute to Tim’s decision to remain neutral.

War is a series of sacrifices used to resolve an international dispute. Choosing a side will show your beliefs and principals. Injustice causes war and war induces violence and destruction of nations. Freedom costs many lives, so a better future is ensured for the next generations. In this family, there are two typical parents that work and live as other families would. There are three children: Kenny, Byron, and Joetta. They are typical in the fact that they are all working-class civilians with no outstanding abnormalities or features.

In the novel, The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Kenny wonders why his brother Byron is so mean to people. Kenny does not treat others better than Byron because he laughed at Rufus and Cody, he was teasing Byron when his lips got stuck to the mirror, and he was complaining when he had to take off his little sister’s winter clothes at school. On page 43, when Larry Dunn makes fun of Rufus and Cody, Kenny laughs at them, too. A true friend could have stood up for Rufus and Cody.

Underground to Canada is a book about a slave girl by the name of Julilly who lives with her mother Mammy Sally who told Julilly about a place called Canada and that there, everyone is free. They live in the Massa Henson Plantation, Virginia. One day a slave trader named Sims comes and buys some of the slave children including Julilly. He also bought 3 slave men by the names of Adam, Ben, and Lester. He put them into a wagon and they travelled south for days until they arrive to a different plantation called the Riley plantation.

We are human and shouldn’t be required to express our regret and beg for pity for it.
