Theme Of Judgement In The Crucible

Arthur Miller implemented heroism in the play, The Crucible, using the characters; John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Giles Corey. The first person to display heroism is John Proctor. John Proctor did not want to have his confession nailed on the church door and explained why, “I blacken all of them, when this is nailed to the church the very day they hang for silence.” (Miller 143). This shows that John is heroic because he chose to not let the church use his confession and let innocent people die because of it.

Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. During this time, many people are hung for being accused of performing witchcraft, but who is there to blame? During this time, many people feared for their lives, and others used this as a time to get rid of people. In The Crucible, Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Deputy-Governor Danforth are responsible for the witch trials in Salem. The play begins with many girls dancing in the woods and people being accused of witchcraft.

Judgment is an easy thing to do but to judge right is the hard part. In the Crucible bad judgment gets thrown around haphazardly causing permanent damage. In this story people manipulate others into executing the people that wronged them. First of all, The people of Salem jump to concussion to quickly cause false judgment in the town. When talk of witchcraft first surfaced in Salem, the town went totally ballistic. As word about the girls dancing naked in the woods got out, people were more afraid of the supernatural force more than ever. Some of the girls supposedly became ill and fingers started to point at Abigail. One can put him or herself in Abigail’s shoes and imagine how scared she was. Perhaps she was so freaked out by the thought of being accused of witchcraft that she made bad judgement of decisions, who knows?

The main characters of both works commit crimes: Raskolnikov by murder and John Proctor by adultery. These crimes act as a catalyst to each book’s plot. In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov is plagued by guilt which initially manifests as delusions. As this guilt grows, he unsuccessfully tries to confess.

This blaming started to create more and more hysteria about witches being in Salem. Had Abigail confessed to being in the woods and had not blamed everyone else for being witches for her gain, It would have been the first step in stopping the hysteria in

So once Abigail said they were witches they had to be killed for their wrong doing. It’s also like in The Scarlet Letter when people found out that Hester Prynne has been “fooling” around with another married man. If they both loved each other then they shouldn’t care what society says about them. Even tho she had a husband everyone thought he was dead

While most people use the book to study the Witch Trials, with closer examination it is easy to conclude that it is a direct allegory to the Red Scare and the McCarthy era of 1950s America. An allegory is an extended metaphor in which the characters or objects in the story represent an outside meaning. The Crucible is an allegory to the Red Scare and the McCarthy era drastically by its plot, characters, and the flow and outcome of the court trials. To begin with, The Crucible is an allegory because the plot of the book closely resembles the events that occurred during the Red Scare.

In The Crucible, John Proctor the protagonist, becomes a victim of the witch trials when his wife Elizabeth, is accused of witchcraft. In order to free his wife, Proctor must convince Judge Danforth of his wife’s innocence. Judge Danforth does not sign condemnations lightly and takes meticulous inspection of his cases to determine the guilty party. He is also a highly religious man who takes matters between God and men seriously. It is because of Danforth’s dedication to the law and God that Proctor utilizes ethos, logos, and pathos to persuade him.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a dramatic play that expresses a very important message and that is how far people would go to save themselves from the hands of death. There are many characters in the Crucible who are guilty of taking innocent lives, but there are three major characters who, without a doubt, are the most at blame. The play takes place in the city of Salem, a city filled with people that would do anything to keep their reputation clean. Throughout the play, Miller is introducing multiple characters that experience changes in their decisions and negatively influence more people eventually leading up to the witch trials. The main point that the story revolves around is that people would rather lie and blame someone else instead of confessing and accepting the punishment.

In the play The Crucible, character such as Abigail and Thomas Putnam seek revenge from others, so much so that it becomes and recurring theme throughout the play. The theme of revenge can best be shown through the characters Abigail Williams, Thomas Putnam, and Giles Corey. Abigail Williams, one of the main characters in the play, becomes one to the biggest contenders for the theme of revenge. It is revealed in the beginning of the play that Abigail has committed adultery with John Proctor. This becomes the root of the revenge because Abigail now thinks that “there is promise in such sweat.”

How do the Values and Morals that individuals choose to uphold help define personal identity and also affect the wider community? The Values and Morals upheld by Individuals within the progression of the play The Crucible allows for a further understanding of the individuals personal identity, and consequently affects the relationships of these Individuals. The values and morals of an individual determine how they’ll react to a situation as the play progresses, whilst the personal identity of an individual is the personality, and roles within the community that the individual associates himself with. The perception of individuals by the community of Salem is heavily reliant upon the shared understanding of the values and morals of individuals

In the Crucible by Aurther Miller there were many themes shown in the text. One of the most common themes presented in the book is Betrayal. Betrayal happens a lot through out life. Betrayal is when you go against someone who you were for at first. People often deal with Betrayal through out everyday life.
