After being humiliated by his new science teacher Mr.Dodge in class, Arnold thinks to himself, “I remember when people used to think I was smart” (Alexie p.86). Another factor that made his transfer harder was his speech impediments. Arnold suffers from a lisp and a stutter and was often bullied for them back at his old school.

The YA novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, written by Sherman Alexie and illustrated by Ellen Forney, takes place on the Spokane Indian Reservation.

In the book “The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian” the theme is about teenagers and alcohol and how it can change your behavior and how badly you think and do actions that could lead to certain destructive emotions from close ones. The main character/Protagonist is Junior aka (Arnold spirit), the theme connects to his family because it’s about his tribe and family struggling with money on a tribe in Spokane, Washington with living in poverty, and depression, and having people in his tribe being very addicted to alcohol, which caused many deaths of the people around him and having to go to multiple funerals. In the book chapter “Because Russian Guys Are Not Always Geniuses”. It talks about how alcohol can connect to junior's life of living with people around him affecting their way of life and how they are dying.

The protagonist from the book “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie had boundaries, just like you and I. In my opinion, transcending boundaries is one of the most important themes throughout this story. The rez, stereotypes, and poverty all created boundaries for him. They tried holding him back and keep him stuck there. Arnold Spirit Jr. Wanted to surpass them.

When people are traumatized by an event they are pushed to experience the five stages of grief. The “Gospel”, by Philip Levine and “the boy detective loses love”, by Sam Sax both use characters that are going through one of the stages of grief. Levine and Sax both explain the thoughts and process of what a person thinks when they go through these stages with imagery. Levine uses symbolism, a sad tone, and a set setting in “Gospel” to illustrate that grieving takes you into a depth of thoughts. Sax uses anaphoras, an aggressive tone, and an ambiguous setting to convey that grieving takes you into a tunnel of anger and rage.

In enduring these complex emotions, this section was the most remarkable part. One of the first apparent emotions the boy experiences with the death of his father is loneliness to make this section memorable. The boy expresses this sentiment when he stays with his father described as, “When he came back he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again,” (McCarthy 281). The definition of loneliness is, “sadness because one has no friends or company.”

Alone in the world, Junior is a young Native American, fighting against the rising tides against him to be hopeful. The novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, written by Sherman Alexie, is about the growth of a teenage Native American, Junior, as he strives to be more than what is given to him. Junior is trying to find himself amidst the dying world of his forefathers and is stripped of his culture. He is also initially hesitant of success for it may cost him the only thing he has left, which is his community. In the passage, “If You Stay On The Rez…” is an extremely important passage since it not only kick starts Junior’s desire to leave and have a chance verse the pitiful life he would continue on the reservation but also draws into the light, the feeling of ‘should I stay or should I go.’

Friendship Has No Labels How did Arnold make so many friends? In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie shows the multiple different types of friendships and how there are different ways they are made. Rowdy showed us that friendships can last a lifetime. Roger showed us that friendships can be unexpected, and Gordy showed us that sometimes friends can come to you at unexpected times.

The Management of Grief and Heart of Darkness are very similar stories if you are looking They both are about its lovers and their lovers’ issues how the reality is being kept out of the way. They both show what true love really does to people and how it can affect others in the path. The both show how people try not to view reality. The Management of Grief was a very interesting story, yet it was sad at the same time.

LOSS, GRIEF AND HEALING As human beings, we suffer losses of many kinds and sizes in our life time. While some of these losses are small and do not hurt much, some are big and hurt deeply. Those that are accompanied by pains that are difficult to bear include the loss of a loved one through death or divorce, cheating or unfaithfulness in a trusted relationship or loss of good health when a diagnosis of a terminal illness is made. In all these instances of loss, pain and grief are experienced and an emotional wound is created which needs healing.
