“Never shall I forget those flame which consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget that Nocturnal Silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall i forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall i forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long God himself. Never.” (Elie Wiesel). “Night” is a book written by Elie Wiesel about his experiences with his father in the Nazi German Concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald, throughout the Holocaust. The book was originally published in 1956. Throughout “Night”, one of the major themes was the idea of small acts of kindness. The police officer told Elie and his family he would warn them if anything would where to happen to them. He wanted to help them but was a bit to late. They were taken to a concentration camp in Auschwitz. A quote from the book the show the Hungarian police was trying to help them was “It was an inspector in the Hungarian police, a friend of my my father, before we went into the ghetto, I’ll warn you” (pg.11). This shows not everybody thought the same as hitler. Some Germans want to rebel against Hitler. This is important because a police officer try to warn them and help them as much as he can. Elie had difficult time in the camp. His father was very ill and ost of the time elie would give him his swoop because he was sick. Elie father had dysentery a terrible disease that back in the days there was a cure for it yet. This made you have a dry mouth and just won't make you want to eat but just drink water, If you drink water you were basically killing yourself from the inside. He trying giving his father his own food and mainly because he didn't want to see his father in this condition. When Elie he was in the ghetto he was a healthy kid and now that he saw himself in the mirror he doesnt recognize him and looks like a corpse. A quote that relates to this is “ three days after the liberation of buchenwald i became very ill with food poisoning. I was transferred to the hospital and spent two weeks between life and death. One day i was able to get up, After gathering all my strength. I wanted to see myself in the mirror hanging on the opposite wall. I hadn't seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me” (pg.83). This show how the holocaust change people life and left them with horrible memories like when Elie look at himself, The last time he saw
