New Nationalism vs. New Freedom In the 1912 election for president there were four candidates, two were Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Both had reforms that they placed as the center of their campaigns. Roosevelt’s reform was New Nationalism and Wilson’s was New Freedom. While they were different in ways they also had some similarities, and their own significance to the people of America. Roosevelts New Nationalism focused on things such as women suffrage, social welfare, more aggressive progressivism and increasing regulation of big business. While Wilson preferred small enterprises, improved individual competition, anti-trust laws, and a free market for the economy. New Nationalism promoted social justice for the underprivileged and getting more power over big businesses by the government. New Freedom promised things such as greater economic opportunities business competition, and keeping a limited, small government. One thing that changed was the foreign policies. Many things played a role in these changes and the way the U.S handled it. From the Westward Expansion and The Spanish-American War to World War I and II. These events caused the United States to take things into consideration and do some renovations. The Westward Expansion consisted of almost 7 million Americans migrating west, hoping to get land and be wealthy. It is often called Manifest Destiny, because many people believed settlers was intended to expand the west. Because so many people thought this way it was also thought the U.S was physically separated from Europe. This migration of people included people from Spain, France, Mexico, and other countries.
