On everyday sociology blog, I came across an article which interested me the most and it was “Thirteen Sociological Things about 13 Reasons Why”, by Jonathan Wynn. The article discusses the Netflix series show which was based on suicide. I have watched the show and the show doesn’t only focus on suicide there are many other factors which are connected to why the suicide took place. To start off, some of the factors included bullying, drugs, sexuality, rape, mental illness, and how adults/parents play a role in a teen’s life. These are all connected with one another. The article also talks about how the way we communicate with others has changed completely. For example, the author writes, “He explains how technologies make us less empathetic,
He remembers people coming into their house and crowding around their television to watch it with them for the first time. In today’s society, there is so much technology and we have gotten so used to it we do not think for ourselves. Mr. Francis explained to me that since there was no technology or cell phones, people actually communicated with each other and had real conversations. He told me that today’s generation relies on our phones and social media so much we forget how to communicate in the outside world, and we talk to people like we talk to them online.
The increase in technology is decreasing human interactions even though communication is essential for everyday

Slowly Disconnecting With every technology related innovation, we get lost; and so does our connection with reality. As a result of this disconnection, our behavior changes. The people closest to us are in our lives, but no longer part of it. Families no longer interact during dinner, or take part in family activities.
13 Reasons Why is a drama series that is on Netflix, the main purpose of this show is to display how teen bullying can ultimately lead to suicide. In the show, Hannah Baker is a new student at Liberty High School. As we know being a new student can be difficult and challenging but for Hannah it was different, her bullying was not the same as everyone else’s. The biggest reason why this show was created was to show everyone that all of those “little things” people do can add up and make people turn to the breaking point.
People have been arguing if 13 Reasons Why is bringing awareness or glamorizing suicide. This show has attracted thousands of people because of how it got started, the good of the press, and the heat it’s taking from the worried parents and officials. First and foremost, we have to know how 13 Reasons Why started. 13 Reasons Why was originally a book written by Jay Asher in 2007. It was also a #1 New York Times and International bestseller listed in July 2011 (13reasonswhy.com).
The infamous “13 Reasons Why” premiered on Netflix in March and has stirred one too many pots ever since. The Netflix series follows high-school student Clay Jensen and his classmate Hannah Baker, who committed suicide. She leaves behind cassette tapes that explain 13 reasons she says she took her own life. Each tape is made for someone who she felt was responsible for her suicide in some way. The show is facing major controversy.
"Technology should make communication easier when it's appropriate," Roberts said. "But when we have access (to more direct forms of communication), we don't use it. Part of it is just that it's human nature to avoid. It's easier. " People have taken the once convenient form of communication used through a screen and swapped it out completely with face-to-face communication.
How is technology changing the way we interact with people around us? Some say technology is resulting in people hiding behind their screens, while others believe it is making relationships stronger. I believe that technology is having many different effects on how people are interacting with each other. I feel that it is causing some people to hide, some try to appear different than what are, yet it is allowing others to stay in stronger contact when they are not able to see each other. “The phone, it’s awkward.

You know technology really isn’t as bad as you think. Technology is not ruining our friendships, although some people think so it’s because, “we can share our feelings better”(Tarshis, p.18), “communicate with someone in another state”, (Tarshis, p.18), and “you can watch a friend grow up with them not living around you”, (Tarshis, p.18). No, technology is not running our friendships, we are getting closer with our friends and people all around the world. We can share our feelings better because now we have these things called emojis, and we feel more comfortable sharing stuff, like our feelings, with our friends and it’s a lot easier than trying to find a word that suits your mood. For me i know it’s hard to tell people what is going on
Ancient forms of human communication include cave drawings, smoke signals, symbols, and carrier pigeons. During the late 1800’s, communication became more advanced with the invention of the typewriter and the telephone. Roughly one hundred years later, a military project resulted in what we know today as the internet. With a little innovation, the internet made social interactions between people easier than ever, although, the convenience may come at a cost. Some theories suggest that heavy reliance on social media for human interaction will weaken communication skills, hinder meaningful social interactions, and negatively impact personal relationships.
People are spending more and more time using technological communication systems, and they are losing their ability to interact socially with others. Melissa Ortega, who is a child psychologist, stated that children are unable to “handle conflict face to face because so many things happen through some sort of technology,” and that children are having “trouble initiating interactions,” because “they don’t have as much experience doing it because they’re not engaging in it ever,” (Katherine Bindley, When Children Text All Day, What Happens To Their Social Skills?, huffingtonpost.com). This shows that newer generations are living in a world where their ability to start conversations with new people is absent. All in all, there is definitely a significant decrease in the usage of social skills and personal interactions between people, and when they are not interacting with others, they are not able to tolerate or accept
A quote by Albert Einstein “I fear the day that technology will surpass human interaction” will ring a bell at many of us due to the advancement and implication of technology and what the impact on face to face communication among people living in urban area in our country. Technology has advanced a lot in order to make life simpler but on the other hand it is also causing a lot of negative impact on our personal life. The quality of our relationships with people and interaction around us is greatly influenced by the presence of these technological gadgets. For example when gadget such smart phone, tablets, laptops, notebook and cameras completely active in household, everybody finds it easy to communicate by send a text from the living room
