Thomas Jefferson was a smart man. He was the author of the Declaration of Independence and also had input into the writing of the Constitution. He once said, "The Constitution belongs to the living and not to the dead." Jefferson said this because the world is ever changing. There are always improvements made everything and more people are born thus more opinions are formed.

In the Declaration of Independence, it is said that “They are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” (Jefferson). This shows the people of the colonies that they have the right to be free from all ties binding them to the British, so there is no reason to not gain independence. Thomas Paine says that “God Almighty will not give up a people to military destruction…who have so earnestly and so repeatedly sought to avoid the calamities of war” (Paine). After much deliberation, Jefferson wanted to emancipate not only himself but intercede on behalf of all colonial settlers with the same freedoms that he dreamt of. Jefferson exposed the tyrannical acts of England so that he could create the image of the self-sustained man through the writing of the Declaration of Independence. This self-sustained man shows how growing his own food provides more than just sustenance, it provides freedom.

Thomas Paine was born in Norfolk England, the son of Quaker and left school early to become his father’s apprentice. Thomas Jefferson was born in Colonial America in the colony of Virginia to a wealthy planter father and a mother from a distinguished family. He was given an extraordinary education and attended college earning a degree in law. As a young man Thomas Paine traveled in England constantly, working and pursuing many different ventures before emigrating to America in 1774.
