Thomas Paine Wrote The Age Of Reason

Nick McFaden Dr. Foster History 121-24 September 17, 2015 Thomas Paine Thomas Paine was born on January 29, 1737 in Norfolk, Great Britain. He was the son of a Quaker corset maker and an Anglican mother. Paine received very little education, however he was literate.

Chris Shannon: Mr. Paine, how did you get to America and what was your role in the American Revolution? Thomas Paine: At first, I was an excise officer in England. I was dismissed, though, after writing that a raise in pay would be the only way to end corruption in the field. I was lucky enough to run into Benjamin Franklin while he was in England though, and he told me that I should move to America and gave me some contacts in the colonies, so I could get a job once I moved there (Foner) I arrived in America on November 1774 and went to work for the Pennsylvania Magazine for about a year and a half.

If all that was said about Thomas Paine was true, then I don’t see why we don’t recognize him as one of the Founding Fathers. Jefferson, himself, even stated that Paine did as much labor as any other man. The only reason I can think that we as Americans haven’t officially recognized him as a Founding Father is because of all that was said about him. Thomas Paine had a way with words and freely expressed them without a care. In 1794, there is an excerpt on Christianity in the book The Age of Reason that was very harsh.

In this next paragraph Thomas Paine talks about a summer soldier explaining that we need people to fight for the right fight in the worst of times. He goes on to talk about Joan of Arc using her as a symbol of honor, liberty, and dignity. He tries using these examples as a way of telling the people that we need to fight and you need to be strong enough to stand against britain. Thomas Paine also talks about the flames of liberty saying this is what we need to fight for. He also talks about the powers of hell and that they are limmeted sygnifying that britain is not an unstopable

In the eighteenth century there was a mix of opposition of independence, and a hope that the new nation would become a home of freedom. Thomas Paine’s argument was that America needs to gain independence from England. Some of the reasons Paine wrote Common Sense is because of unnecessary wars, monarchial government, and the way Britain treated America. Regardless of Paine’s popularity with Common Sense, Jonathan Boucher was a minister who explained his opposition of the revolutionary movement in his sermons. He believed if God wanted America to be independent it would have happened, and it is our duty as citizens to obey the laws because we will be disobedient to God.

Throughout the excerpts of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” he makes many compelling points on why America during that time was in the perfect position for independence. In the first paragraph Paine writes about how the economy of the colonies could thrive if they were not under the rule of the Britain. He makes points on how if America was not limited in trade by Britain and the colonies had its own legislative branch the economy would be a lot stronger. In the second paragraph Thomas Paine talks about how in the past if the colonies tried to rebel their military would not have been ready but during the time “Common Sense” was written the American military was ready. Thomas Paine was one of the most influential political pens of the eighteenth century. He was a champion, political philosopher, and revolutionary who played a crucial part in the American Revolution and the French Revolution. Paine's ideas were grounded on the principles of common sense, which he believed were essential for the establishment of a just and indifferentsociety. In his leaflet" Common Sense," Paine argued that the American colonies should seek independence from Great Britain. He believed that the colonies had the eventuality to be a great nation, and that independence was the only way to achieve this.

Thus with the Holy Spirit’s hand and G-d’s creation, in any circumstance whether in an office with paintings or in a forest clothed in autumn radiance persuading the mind of Thomas Paine is possible. In conclusion, with a common goal for discussion and an appropriate environment, I can enter into a productive conversation with Paine about his beliefs. By asking Paine questions about what he believes, Thomas Paine will automatically ponder his answers and possibly change his mind by seeing the inconsistences in his argument. Paine’s purpose for writing the piece was to convince the colonists to declare independence from Great Britain. He adopts a patriotic tone, explaining the advantages of and the need to proclaim independence from a tyrannical country. Paine also utilizes multiple rhetorical strategies, and any means necessary, to persuade his audience to share in his beliefs. With the use of constructed argument and rhetorical devices such as ethos, logos and pathos, as well as diction and syntax, Paine is able to present the argument that the United States should strive for its independence from England.

Thomas Paine, a local pamphleteer in the pre-Revolutionary War era, wrote a convincing pamphlet to any colonists who were not already supporting the war for independence from Great Britain. In his argument, Paine uses rhetorical strategy, an emotional aspect, and divine revelation towards the citizens to create a very moving, passionate, and convincing call to arms. The first line, “These are the times that tried men 's souls,” is one of relatability and preparedness for the oncoming difficult times. Paine starts his essay off with a refutation of his argument, stating that although he wants this fight, he knows it will be tough. Paine then challenges the men’s bravery and patriotism to their country by stating the line “The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country.”

Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine have a lot of similarities, with one of them being their beliefs on religion. They both had very strong beliefs that organized religion was a tool that was being used to manipulate people. Thomas Jefferson went as far as writing his own version of the bible. The idea that organized religion is used for control is one of the major reasons they both agree and believe strongly on the separation of Church and State. Though they were seen as “anti-religious” or “anti-Christian” they just believed in variations of what at that time the Christians believed.
