Courage is a miraculous quality. Courage is great, because it gives people character, and can even provide opportunities. When individuals use courage the right way, they can get far in life. This is proven true in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is used by Atticus, Jem, and Scout. Atticus exemplifies courage in several situations. The most important of these is defending Tom Robinson. In these times, things were hard for colored people like Tom. Almost everyone in Maycomb County had criticised Atticus and his children for taking up the case of defending Tom Robinson and they were even called "nigger lovers" by many. At first, Jem did not understand why his father chose to defend Tom Robinson when he knew that people would whisper and gossip about it and that the possibility of him winning the case was very low.

He even tries to get his kids to follow in his footsteps. What Atticus meant when he told Scout what courage was, was that even if you know that you're going to lose something it doesn't mean you shouldn't try.
The entire town was against Atticus and his decision to defend Tom, but he stood up for what he thinks is right. Another way Atticus shows how courageous he can be is when he decides to spend the night alone outside the jail making sure Tom Robinson would be ok. Even when most of Maycomb came and tried to jump Tom and Atticus, he still wouldn't budge and continued to still stick up for Tom.
Another example of courage is that Atticus continues to read to Scout even with the disapproval of her teacher, Miss Fisher, this shows Atticus’ ability and courage to keep a strong bond with his children by reading despite the teacher saying that his ways of teaching was
People have in mind that courage is about being able to save other peoples’ lives and risking your own, or to climb Mount Everest, or to jump from the top of a high building.
