To Kill a Mockingbird was an amazing book. Hands down was one of the best books I've ever read. The theme of the story can be a bit hazy at times though. You have to intently, examine the book in order to figure that out. However I have found it. The theme of the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, is to always be courageous, no matter what. Examples of courage show up all throughout the novel. From Atticus, to Jem, to Dill, and to Mrs. Dubose they all show courage. Whether they are reading to Mrs. Dubose or running up and touching the Radley house they are all courageous characters. One example of Atticus showing courage is when he takes Tom Robinson's court case against the Ewells (Lee 89). Atticus knows for sure that when he takes the case he …show more content…
One example of a very courageous man is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He fought for equality among African-Americans in the U.S. He was the symbol of the fight against racial discrimination. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. truly was a hero. Rosa Parks was also an amazingly brave person. When she refused to give up her seat, on the bus, to a white man she knew she was in for it. However by doing so Rosa Parks helped end segregation on public transportation. She was a great, courageous lady. Finally Muhammad Ali was a very brave soul. The will it took to say no to the people of America and not fight in Vietnam was tremendous. Even when he was threatened with jail time and public opprobrium, he stood his ground and didn't back down. All three of these historical people were very courageous …show more content…
You can just be a normal Joe and still be brave and still make a difference in your everyday life. Take Dustin Rowen for example. He's a twenty-five year old man who lives in Detroit. He saved a woman from drowning in a massive flood. Rowen also saved two other people later that day, which shows you don’t have to be a superhero to be brave. Someone else who showed great courage was Deborah Hughes. She saved a man from being beaten to death in Detroit. All 4 foot 11 inches and 126 pounds of her. She leaped on top of the man who was being beaten and potentially saved his life. As a result of this, she was in a coma for a week. Those were just normal, everyday people who made a
By showing the world courage, heroes impact our society and teach us how to be better people. Georgia Gilmore and Elie Wiesel demonstrated courage during the hard times of segregation and the Holocaust. Georgia Gilmore courageously fought for the civil rights movement despite all that was against her. Her actions inspired many people to do the same. Georgia Gilmore was an African American woman that lived in Montgomery, Alabama, and participated in the Montgomery bus boycott by fundraising for the organization, Club from Nowhere.
Atticus keeps going even after the guilty verdict which many people would not have the courage to do. This is an example of real and rare
It take a lot of courage Out of all the people in Maycomb, Atticus shows the most courage. In a small county call Maycomb county, the county is in a bit of trouble because of a case. A father convicted a man of “raping” his daughter.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a novel by Harper Lee, and was written as an educational novel. It was published in 1960 and in 1961 won the Pulitzer Prize. The plot and characters are based on the observations of the author of her neighbors when she was ten years old. The novel is known for its humor and warmth, despite the serious situations of things like rape and racism. The father of the narrator, Atticus Finch, has become a model of morality for many readers, as well as an example of an honest lawyer.
Courage can be defined in many ways, but for the most part, courage is taking a stand and taking challenges. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main character Scout and her older brother Jem face the difficulties of growing up while living in a small southern town in the 1930s. They deal with discrimination from their racist community due to the fact their father, Atticus, is defending a black man, Tom Robinson, in court. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Atticus to show true courage is standing up for what is right even when it is difficult. One way Atticus proves what courage is, is when he is explaining to Jem why he made him read to Mrs. Dubose as a punishment.
Beowulf & Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A basic definition, of a hero is a person that puts others’ lives and safety first. Therefore, he’s defined by his acts and traits not by his looks or social status. He is well respected not only by the ones that he saves, but also by his community as a whole. Heroes come from everywhere around the world, with different capabilities, backgrounds and beliefs. Yet, they have a lot in common, most importantly standing up for the ones that cannot stand for themselves.
Atticus Finch is a smart, passionate man looking to do what’s fair and what it takes to turn the heads of others, for not only a good way but influential way too. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD By:Harper Lee Is a good classic novel made on July 11, 1960.This novel is about a middle aged man with two kids named Scout and Jem Finch. This novel is based around one main thing, taking a stand. Atticus is faced with a problem when a black man named Tom Robinson is accused of rape and the beating of a white woman, Atticus takes the case and is being bashed about it every day by the white community known as Maycomb.
Atticus was chosen to defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who was accused of rape by a white woman named Mayella Ewell. During the 1930s, when this book was set, the attitude towards black people was very racist due to laws and culture called Jim Crow. Atticus knew that because of the racial injustice, he had no chance of winning the trial. We know this because of some of the things said by other people. We hear some men say “you know the court appointed him to defend this n####r.”
Controversy will always be woven into society. Yet, controversy would not be a problem if everyone did not have different opinions. " People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for" (Harper lee). Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird as a social commentary, so that we could learn life lessons about what used to happen to and so that it does not happen again. This is one of the most taught pieces of literature to students, because of all of the controversy and to make sure that students learn from the horrid mistakes of the past.
Harper Lee successfully demonstrates the theme of courage through the characterisation of Atticus. One such instance is when a lynch mob surrounds him at night, wanting to kill Tom Robinson. Walter says “‘You know what we want, get aside from the door, Mr Finch.’ ‘You can turn around and go home again, Walter,’ Atticus said pleasantly.” (pg. 153)
All Atticus is really trying to show is that he is a man just like the men on the jury and that he should not be
Courage is not something to be underestimated. The biggest example of courage is when Atticus defends Tom Robinson in court. When Scout first acquires about the trial Atticus states, “‘I’m simply defending a Negro- his name’s Tom Robinson.’” (Lee 100). This is courage because had to overcome many things because of his choice of defending a black man.
Courage “Courage is simply the willingness to be afraid and act anyways” - Dr. Robert Anthony. In courage is one of the main themes. There are many examples of courage in the book. Atticus shows courage in many ways and parts of the book and so do many other characters. In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus shows courage towards Tom in a couple ways and Boo Radley shows courage.
Take for example, Harriet Tubman she is individual that persevered and showed her resilience despite of being born into slavery, for 29 years Tubman was a slave in a Plantation in Maryland. Before escaping, Tubman suffered through family hardships and personal sickness. When she finally escaped to Pennsylvania a free state, she went on to become one of the greatest abolitionist of the 19th century. Tubman role in the underground railroad was as a conductor, she went on to free her family and hundreds of other people through the underground network of safe houses. In addition to being a leader of the underground railroad, Tubman worked with the Union Army as a cook, nurse, scout and even as a spy during the Civil war.
Think about someone that you admire, do you admire that person because of something brave or courageous they have done? Bravery and courage can be found in many different kinds of situations. It is when you stand up for something that you believe in or when you commit an act that pushes you out of your comfort zone. Often times, an act of bravery or courage is done without that person even knowing it. There are several examples of courage in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
