Atticus showed his children that he was a brave man when he stepped into the street to face down a dangerous dog. Although he didn't believe that act was especially brave and he was completely not interested in proving anything to his children but Jem and Scout were proud of, and impressed by, his courage in such a dangerously unsteady situation. But shooting something wasn't really Atticus' idea of courage. He looked courage on a more thinking-related level, as a moral thing, not as something that can be proved with a weapon. During 1930s, white people were considered superior than black people and there was racism. Atticus being a white men also showed courage by going against the Maycomb people and willingly defended Tom Robinson, a black men. Due to that he was often called N-lover by other white people. Despite of those criticisms given by many of the town’s people, he did his best to defend Tom. He said, "If I didn't I couldn't hold my head up in town, I couldn't represent this country in legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something".(page 75). On page 149, Atticus says : “Son, I told you that if you hadn't lost your head I'd have made you go read to her. I wanted you to see something about her. I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you …show more content…
He knew that being an officer of the court, withholding information from an investigation could have thrown him in jail. Nonetheless ,doing what is fair and right is Atticus’ way of thinking. Boo had performed a great deed by saving Jem and Scout’s life. Atticus knew that exposing Boo would be an awful way of repaying him; it would have been like "killing a mockingbird." Because a mockingbird does no harm instead it provides beauty and sings melody songs. So killing something that is harmless is like destroying the innocence. Therefore, Atticus chose to protect Boo from the people rather than abide by the law and his "honest" ways he was so accustomed to follow. That takes
Boo is unfairly judged because of his actions. He is tied with morality and is upholding his dignity and fighting prejudice. Unlike Boo symbolizing the mockingbird, Atticus is different. He tries to keep Tom Robinson from being killed.
Boo doesn’t get the opportunity to show that he truly is a good human being and wouldn’t harm anyone unless he needed to. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird, and it’s a sin to kill or harm Boo
The reason Boo was able to save them from being killed was because he could see well in the dark along with rushing to help as soon as he could even though he was not armed and Bob was. One quote in the book is where Mr. Tate says “Draggin’ him with his shy ways into the limelight-to me, that’s a sin.”(Lee 370) as he realizes bring Boo to testify what had occurred would be akin to shooting a mockingbird. Mr. Tate comes to this conclusion as bringing him to court would cause significant gossip and fame, which Boo has been avoiding and figures out that Boo only killed Bob out of kindness, and like a mockingbird all they do is help the community. That is why Boo is considered a mockingbird in this situation as he risks danger to protect two children and asks for nothing in
Boo just wants to be left alone. That’s one thing that might happen if people were to know the truth about Boo saving Jem and Scout. So it was very thoughtful of Mr. Tate to keep this between Atticus and himself. That was a lesson Scout also learned in the story. Do not kill a mockingbird because it has never done anything to hurt you.
Atticus shows courage by defending Tom Robinson in court and by going so far as to defend his life as he sleeps in a jail cell. Atticus’ motivation for all of this is his wanting for wanting his kids from “Catching Maycomb’s usual disease” (Lee 117) of prejudice and racism, seeing that if he doesn’t take this risk and give it everything he’s got, he can do nothing to keep his children from becoming like the rest of the town. Atticus’ devotion to keep his children with open-minds drives his courage to the point where he puts himself between a mob of Maycomb’s hateful racist folks and the man that he is
Throughout the novel, Atticus has cared about nothing other than doing the right thing to be a positive role model in their lives. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a black man that was convicted of raping a white girl. In this time period, defending a black man will earn you the title of "nigger-lover. " The ultimate insult, this is precisely the title that Atticus earned. This identity of Atticus became so well known around Maycomb that even the children at school told Jem and Scout that their father was a "nigger-lover.
One way Atticus shows courage is when he shoots the dog Tim Johnson and reveals his skill to his family and his neighborhood, Atticus pulls up in a car with Heck Tate and they are both shown where the dog is, Heck gets the gun set up and tells Atticus that he is the only one who can make a shot
“I want you to understand that courage isn’t a man with a gun in his hand,” (Lee 112). This is a quote spoken from a courageous man who put himself in other people’s positions and did not believe he was superior to African Americans like many in that time period. Atticus Finch is a lawyer, and also the father of Jem and Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The finches live in a small town called Maycomb during 1933, also known as the Great Depression era. Throughout the book, the town faces many racial discrimination issues, especially when an African American man named Tom Robinson is falsely accused of rape of a white female.
In her book, Harper Lee shows us courage means standing up for what is right no matter the cost even if it seems that everybody else is against you. Harper Lee makes it crystal clear what courage looks like through the character of Atticus.
As Atticus states, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Pg 30). Atticus acknowledges the daunting odds stacked against him in the racially charged society of Maycomb County, yet he remains resolute in his pursuit of justice. Additionally, Atticus challenges societal norms and calls upon others to do the same when he passionately implores, "In the name of God, do your duty. In the name of God, believe Tom Robinson" (Pg 104).
In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the most significant themes is real heroes do not always use weapons. For example, one of the meanest woman to ever live, Mrs. Dubose, was a morphine addict. The addiction made her needy because she wanted to take the drug, but resisted. Mrs. Dubose was determined not to “‘leave this world beholden to nothing and nobody... she meant to break herself of [the addiction] before she died’” (60).
To Kill a Mockingbird - Courage "Courage is when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee 's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. "Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus fits into this definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it several times throughout the novel. "The only thing we 've got is a black man 's word against the Ewells '.
"Jem, I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It 's when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. " This insightful statement was told by Atticus Finch to his son, Jem Finch. Many people in Maycomb had to deal with racism, hatred, and discrimination because of their skin color or because of the court case.
When Boo killed Ewell, saving Jem and Scout, Atticus’ perspective of Boo completely changed. " [...]Sheriff Tate interrupts, telling Atticus that Jem did not stab Ewell; that he fell on his own knife... Atticus and the Sheriff decided that Boo should be spared a trial. They tried him in the secret courts of their own hearts, and declared him "not guilty," and Scout endorses their decision: to try Boo would be like shooting a mockingbird" (Dare 86). Jem and Scout notice that he wasn’t as scary as they
Three stories that show courage's true meaning will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs. Courage can cause either catastrophe, change, or both. To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is the story of a man named Atticus who defends a black man on trial knowing very well the consequences of that decision. His children, Scout and Jem, admire
