To What Extent Was The Election Of 1824

Jackson’s voting policies were democratic because they increased the power of the people. In Document 1, the table shows that after Jackson was elected, presidential electors were chosen more and more by the people instead of the legislature. By 1828, the ratio of legislature to people was 2:10. By 1832 and 1836, the ratio changed to 1:11. In line with Document 2, Daniel Webster said that he never saw anything like it, meaning he saw many poor farmers celebrating instead of rich upper class men.

This led to many debates in congress and posed a threat to the continuation of slavery in America. The constitution of 1824 was also a topic of political debates. This constitution gave the president increased power and political roles. Similarly the presidential election of 1828 was the first to have such unrestrained and damaging mudslinging. This election sets the example of what all elections try to avoid to this day.

The election of 1828 was like no other before for many reasons. The election was different partly because of changes in social and campaign practices. More people were starting to pick a political part and vote for that party’s candidate only. People not only picked party’s and stood by them but they also started to show support for their candidate in new ways such as parades newspapers and any way they could spread and show their support for their candidate. The makeup of the electorate played a big role in the election of 1828.

During his two terms in office, President Jackson would not only implement a series of policies that drastically expanded slavery, but he would also create a pro-slavery sentiment in America that would reverberate for many generations after his final term in office. In the first part of this essay, I will introduce the election of 1828. In the second part of this essay, I will attempt to explain why Andrew Jackson's arrival to the presidential Mansion had such a profound effect on Southern secession. The presidential election of 1824 is one of the most unique elections in American history because the four candidates in the election, who were William Crawford, Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson were all from the Jacksonian Republican Party. There was only one-party government in the United States in the previous few years since the United States was established. For the Election of 1824 they was 3 people running for president, they were Henry Clay of Kentucky, Andrew Jackson of Tennessee, and John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts. Jackson won 99 electoral votes, giving him a plurality, or largest single share. But according to 10-1 in paragraph 2, sentence 4, it states,"Under the Twelfth Amendment, when no candidate gets a majority of electoral votes, the House of Representatives selects the president. " During the House prepared to vote, Clay and Adams made an agreement that Clay would use his influence as Speaker of the House to defeat Jackson.

As Monroe’s second term was coming to an end, the Americans were still holding onto these new feelings that they had developed. There were three candidates with no majority votes. During the election, Representative Henry Clay withdraws from the presidential election. After withdrawing, Clay promises to support Jackson in the election. He also charged Adams for corruption while winning the election in 1828. During his presidential term, Jackson lowered the property qualification for the suffrage rights.

Andrew Jackson won the important Electoral College vote by ninety-nine votes, however, John Quincy Adams, who only got eighty-four Electoral College votes, won the presidency. Even though Jackson got the most votes, it was only forty-three percent, and due to it not being the majority, the House of Representatives chose the winner out of the two of them. Henry Clay, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, had also ran for president, coming in third it the Electoral College vote. He detested Jackson, and it was because of this that Adams won the election. He forged an Ohio Valley-New England Coalition that secured John Quincy Adam’s place in the White House.

Jackson portrayed himself as the “common man” president and connected with the electors. This was a pretty messy election because Jackson and Clay have been enemies for years. During the election of 1828, Andrew Jackson accuses Henry Clay of killing his wife. John Quincey Adams was running against Jackson and major accusations were being made about both running mates. Andrew Jackson claimed that Adams used tax payer money to buy gambling tools.

By this time, the Federalist Party was no longer, which meant the United States was being dominated by the Democratic-Republicans, who led the one party system. However, in 1828 he ran again, and won in a landslide in both the electoral and popular votes. During his presidency, he expanded the electorate, creating suffrage for all white men, regardless of wealth or property. This was the first step in giving all Americans the opportunity to vote. Expanding suffrage for white men not only began expansion of suffrage, but also sparked the interest of more people within politics, and created the idea of parties and party loyalty.

When the year of 1807 came around, the way that America elected a president changed. In previous elections, only the rich men were able to vote which as a result whoever promised more the wealth was elected for president. When the common man was able to vote in 1807, the type of candidate to win the election change. As seen in the election of 1828 the person who was more relatable to the people, won because the common man was able to vote and so they used that opportunity and elected whoever they thought was going to help them. Overall the people preferred Jackson over Adams because Jackson was able to relate to the people better, and because he was a symbol of the American dream.

In the Election of 1824 you got to see John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay in a crooked deal that became known as the “corrupt Bargain”. John Q.Adam agreed to make Henry Clay his secretary of state in return for him to be president. Because of this the next president will not be chosen behind closed doors.
