During the early to mid 1900s there was a lot of racism, especially in the southern United States. This is expressed more inside the court cases of the time. While lots of these ended poorly for defendant, it was often because of the color of their skin, not because they were guilty. In fact many times the defendant was actually innocent.
The book To Kill a Mockingbird takes place during this time and even has a court case in it. This case is the case of Tom Robinson vs Bob Ewell. This case may be fictional, but it shows the racism that took place in that time period. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping and beating Bob Ewell’s daughter Mayella. There was a lynch mob that went after Tom, but was stopped by the main character,

There are many similarities between the two court cases including the false accusation of rape, the involvement of a lynch mob, the fact that many times they were proven innocent, and that they were all very young. I’ve observed that false accusations of rape was very common in these types of trials, mostly because it was a very serious crime in the southern half of the United States, where racism was very common. Several times after the defendant is proven guilty, someone will come out and say that they were innocent, but often times it is too late for the accused. Most of this type of trial frequent lynch mobs and not just after, but they will try and get to them before they are even tried. Many of these cases are ended by a confession. These are very often times false confessions and the people are just trying to get off easy and go to jail without causing people trouble. But the false confession just riles up the crowd way more than needed and the accused just ends up getting killed.
The boys were very lucky in only getting jailed for a small amount of time and weren’t found by any sort of mob. Tom was also lucky in the fact that he didn’t get attacked by the mob, but he never got to see his family again after he was imprisoned. The case of the Scottsboro Boys was a very large contribution to the abolishment of Jim Crow laws and Tom’s fictional case was there to show how bad racism was back during the
Tom Robinson Tom Robinson was a part of the unfair and racist Court system in the 1900s. He and many other black men were falsely accused of things such as Rape, Burglary, assualt etc…. This Case was very similar to the other Falsly cases around this time the only difference being Tom Robinson had a Lawyer who defended him well. He provided us with loads of evidence proving Tom Robinsons Innocent. No Medical reports, The eye opposite Tom Robison's dominant hand was blackened, and Mayolla and her father have mixed stories.
In this paper it will talk about how the girls were in this case. The scottsboro case was about a group of men that were accused for rapping two women on a train, in the 1930s. Tom Robinson’s case was about him rapping a white women. In the book to kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee. To kill a mockingbird is about Atticus defending a man named Tom Robinson.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a story about an african american man who has there life on the line because his being falsely accused of raping a white woman. To Kill a Mockingbird was based off the true story of the Scottsboro boys who were a group of african american teenagers who all had their lives on the line for being falsely accused of raping two white women. Both of these cases are similar because they both have to do with african american men who are being falsely accused of rape, deal with racial injustice or hatred, and are both represented by kind white lawyers. Both the Scottsboro case and the Tom Robinson case, where about black men that had their lives on the line for being falsely accused of rape. On April 9th,1931 an Alabama judge sentenced
In the story To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it displays how many racial issues occurred in the southern part of the country during the 1930’s. An example being when Tom Robinson who is a innocent black man who is being accused of assault against Mayella Ewell. At the courthouse, every witness stated that Tom Robinson raped Mayella Ewell on November 21st and punched her in her right eye. But, Tom Robinson can’t use his left arm so there was no possible way that Tom Robinson punched Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch attempts to prove Tom Robinson’s innocence by using strong, emotional appeals to convince the jury.
Everyone in Maycomb knew that “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.” (Lee 276). Mayella Ewell claims to be raped and beaten up by Tom Robinson after she asked him to help her in the house. During the testimony the truth that Robinson did not rape her emerges. Scout realizes during the testimony “that Mayella must have been the loneliest person in the world”
Tom Robinson has been falsely accused of rape over a father covering up his abuse. But because of his skin color he lost his defense and had been sentenced to death. Tom is a kind nice man and has been set to court because of Bob Ewell accusing him of raping his daughter. He has brought his daughter to his side but the reality is, Bob Ewell abused his daughter Mayela and putting the blame on Bob because he is black man and knows he will win in court. The fact that Tom is a black man and Bob is a white man, it would be for sure that Bob would win because of his race.
Although it would affect the younger members of the group, their incompetent lawyers were willing for the court to try all of the boys together. The two white women who accused them of rape, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates, were questioned quickly before the all-white Alabama Jury
I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 208. This book tells the adventures of a young girl named Scout, her brother, Jem, and their friend, Dill. They are trying to get Boo Radley to come out, as their father, Atticus, who is a lawyer deals with a difficult case of defending Tom Robinson. In this paper I will be characterizing and evaluating.
In 1937, the case was taken to the Supreme Court and the boys’ convictions were dropped. This case raised issues in the legal system and also caused people to rethink the judicial
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
The children begin to see the discrimination and inequality that is embodied by the Southern courts during their Tom Robinson trial. Jem and Scout find that the power of white men trumps the need for justice and fairness. Even if that white man is someone as untrustworthy and rotten as Bob Ewell. In the minds of the men witnessing Tom Robinson’s trial, there was no defense and nothing Atticus Finch says could change that. Tom Robinson was dead before the trial even starts.
The 1930s was a very challenging time for america, it was the peak of the the Great Depression and the social oppression of women. The fictional novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is centered around the political issues america faced. The novel takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb Alabama where we look at the case of Tom Robinson against Mayella and Bob Ewell. The story goes that Tom Robinson went into the Ewell household and took advantage of Mayella and beat her. Although Mayella was actually the perpetrator, she won the case and Tom Robinson was sentenced to prison.
The case is a typical case during these times in the south. A black man is wrongly accused. Tom is found guilty even though it is blatant that he is innocent. Throughout the story, the children’s loss of innocence is critically
Tom Robinson is a black man who is wrongfully convicted of raping a white girl, Mayella Ewell. This novel goes through Scout's life from when she was 6, till she is 9. She lives in the town of Maycomb Alabama, and lives an innocent life until about halfway through the story, where she begins to ask questions. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout shows the readers that racial inequality creates an unjust society through the African American community, through the people surrounding colored folks, and through Tom Robinson’s Case. The first example of the consequences of racial inequality is the African American community in Maycomb.
In the South of the United States in the 1930´s, the justice system was very unfair towards colored people. Colored people that were sent to court could not receive a fair trial because of the prejudice and racism from the jury. This happened all the time, especially in Maycomb Alabama. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a colored man named Tom Robinson was convicted of assaulting a white woman just because of the color of his skin. Tom Robinson should have been found not guilty for many reasons.
