His purpose in these exaggerations is to make a statement about censorship, individualism, and authoritarian government. The concept of Newspeak in the book is to censor and control the people through the manipulation of the English language. It is meant to be a revised version of the English language that minimizes the language to limit how people communicate with others. During 1984 by George Orwell, the main character, Winston, yearns to remember what life was like before ‘the Party’ took over. However, as the government has brainwashed people and begun to control their minds, Winston finds himself unable to remember or have any proof regarding the truth about the past. In this particular passage, Winston reflects on how the party controls everyone, seemingly hopeless about ever knowing the truth instead of being controlled by the Party. He considers how ‘the Party’ possesses the capability to turn any lie into the truth, just because of the fact that they are the governing force in the society, and they declare how people should think. As people’s minds are what shape our world, when the government controls people’s minds, the government ultimately shapes the world.

Living through the first half of the twentieth century, George Orwell watched the rise of totalitarian regimes in Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Soviet Union. Fighting in Spain, he witnessed the brutalities of the fascists and Stalinists first hand. His experiences awakened him to the evils of a totalitarian government. Winston understands how the party controls the people but not why they do. He thinks about the party slowly destroying words to constrict though words, so Oceania’s residents are mindless zombies who do as they are told without any resistance. Moreover, Winston realizes that that Oceania’s citizens are just agreeing and people are submitting to Big Brother’s will without realizing it for themselves. Hence, Winston computes thoughts with his oldspeak and does not succumb to the party’s grasp to force people on newspeak. To reiterate, 1984 is about Winston Smith who does not fit in George Orwell persuades the reader to know that being one of the pack is not acceptable, one needs to be unique in their own way.

Joseph Goebbels once said,”Propaganda works best when those who are being manipulated are confident they are acting on their freewill”. This statement is proven to be true in 1984. The author, George Orwell, creates a fictional dystopian society in which the population is manipulated into thinking they live in a great world, whereas the government has full control over them. In 1984, George Orwell’s prime message, supported by the article called Liberty in North Korea by Hae Re, was the lack of individualism gives power to the applicable leader, which is conveyed using the characters speech and symbolism. As a result, the people have very little capacity to rebel against the Party with regards to other concepts and subject areas, as they do not have the relevant words which allow them to think rationally and to articulate themselves clearly to others. Additionally, the Party is able to manipulate the way in which the people conceive reality, by making use of principles such as “doublethink” and “duckspeak”. With all these methods, the Party is able to control and make the people submissive to itself, thus allowing it to maintain its rule and authority.
