Summary Of A Separate Peace By John Knowles

When the main character Finny dies in A Separate Peace, the author John Knowles does not put the burden of the blame on one single character but shows each character's thoughts of the accident. Finny and his best friend Gene go to an all boys school in New Hampshire. Finny is an extroverted star athlete who is friends with everyone, while Gene is more of an introvert who focuses on his academic career. One summer afternoon while Gene and Finny are walking along a river, Finny persuades Gene to climb with him to the top of a tree he spots and jump into the water below. Finny tragically stumbles on a limb on the top of the tree and fall off, shattering his leg.

In the book A Separate Peace by John Knowles the protagonist, Gene, has a psychological moment where he is coming of age and becomes mature at the moment of when he jostles the limb causing Finny to fall. In the novel the author made Gene jealous of Finny since he was very athletic and also was able to get good grades without trying. While Gene on the other hand had to study every night in order to get good grades. Soon Gene wishes he could be as good as Finny in sports which is causing Gene to be jealous of Finny.

At the end of the novel, Gene has lost his true identity and acts like someone else. (137 words) Finny is the main character's roommate. Finny is very hyper, athletic, and spontaneous. He is well liked at the Devon School by his classmates and teachers. He is the rebel of the story.

In the book, A Separate Peace, both Finny and Gene view the definition of friendship differently in their own special ways. Finny shows a lot of respect for his friend, Gene. Even though sometimes things always need to go his way, he shows deep care for Gene. Throughout the few chapters in the book, Finny shows that he truly loves Gene like a brother and is very caring towards his friendship with Gene. “If Finny hadn’t come up right behind me… if he hadn’t been there… I could’ve fallen on the bank and broken on my back!

There are, and always will be, characters in literature that constantly conform, and just want to fit in. These characters, however, are not typically the narrator, such as is true in A Separate Peace by John Knowles. The narrator, Gene, constantly changes tone throughout the novel. These changes in tone are erratic, and are seemingly random. When it’s closely examined, it becomes increasingly clear that Gene clings to and mirrors the tone of the strongest leader available.

During the late 1930’s and early to mid1940’s, Allies were fighting the axis powers in WW2. Along with the high tensions amongst countries, there was also high tension amongst civilian lives. John Knowles’ A Separate Peace clearly shows the tension within a friendship similar to that of Britain’s and Germany’s relationship. Through Allegory, John Knowles shows the tension within two friends that eventually leads to their inevitable demise. The symbolic items in the book are: Gene, the main character, Finny, the deuteragonist, and Finny’s pink shirt.

When Finny finds out that Gene is going to be the assistant manager for the crew team he questions it because he knows that Gene is good enough to play sports, especially since it’s his senior year

The friendship Gene and Finny have throughout the story slowly changes to envy that Gene portrays towards Finny as a result of his jealousy. Finny is only one of those sort of gentlemen that is extremely understood and individuals truly like. However, Finny is the kind of individual who is great at everything including sports and talking himself out of trouble. For example, Finny breaking the school swimming recorded lead to Gene being desirous. Gene predicts that Finny is attempting to show off his athletic ability.

Enemies will betray you, backstab you and can be very difficult to deal with. Destroying your enemy will leave guilt in your heart. In the novel A Separate Peace, John Knowles exhibits peace from reality. Gene cannot handle his emotions so he creates three imaginary friends to avoid his real enemies which were his hatred, insecurity, jealousy, enmity and envy. His imaginary enemies were Finny, Leper, and Quackenbush.

Gene considers Finny to be his best friend. In this type of friendship there is an implied vow of trust, loyalty and sense of forever friendship "Finny could shine with everyone, he attracted everyone he met. I was glad of that too. Naturally. He was my roommate and my best friend" (Knowles 40).

The author, John Knowles, in the novel, “A Separate Peace”, conveys the lesson of friendship, or rather the lack of, with his use of diction. The strategy in which the author phrased certain sections of dialogue between Finny and Gene is there to show that Finny cares for Gene despite Gene’s obvious discontent. The friendship is a one-way street, and the author uses diction to represent this unbalance in the relationship, leading to friendship being a key theme throughout the book. There exist many examples of this diction throughout the novel, one of these is during their illegal beach trip. “I hope you’re having a pretty good time here.

I do not believe that Finny should forgive Gene. I believe this because Gene admitted to purposefully making Finny fall, Gene ruined the trust between them, and because Finny’s injury will last forever. On page 62, Gene tells Finny that he “deliberately jounced the limb so you would fall off.” A direct confession from someone of purposefully causing you harm is very hard to forgive. A counterargument to this could be that perhaps it was an accident.

War: Its Effects, and Disguises Every person can be a veteran of war at times, even if it is in personal battles rather than literal war. This is the case for the Gene as well as Finny in John Knowles 's A Separate Peace. The significance of the contrast of internal conflict with external conflict highlights Gene 's multiple conflicts with himself as well as Finny, building internal and external conflict through both characters. Ultimately, Gene becomes a veteran in the literal and figurative sense of war, regardless of uniform. Gene 's victory in this war with himself portrays how war can prevail in and out of uniform.

Devon, an elite boarding school, is highly competitive, forcing students to have envy for one another. In the story Gene’s envy for Finny is a constant theme throughout the book. Working little for his goals, it can be seen that Finny gets everything he wants using his persuasion and athletic abilities . As Finny’s friend it is easy to feel pushed away from the spotlight. Gene thinks everything he does with Finny is a competition.
