Trail of Tears
During the 1830s, the Cherokee Nation was forced to relocate from the southeastern part of the United States to westward beyond the Mississippi River. The white settlers who were led by Andrew Jackson forced the Cherokee out of their homes. This tragedy would be considered a resource conflict. A resource conflict is an argument between two groups over land or materials. This move destroyed more than ten thousand natives and drastically changed the Cherokee way of life. This conflict, eventually known as the Trail of Tears, was caused by the white settlers wants and needs that differed from what the Native Americans wanted. There were numerous causes, goals, and steps taken on each side of this dilemma to get what each group wanted, but there was never a peaceful agreement made between the white settlers and the Cherokee Nation.
As the United States started to expand with more people, they needed more land. The white settlers were pressuring the government to take the Cherokee land, so they could live there. One of the main reasons the settlers were interested in the government taking the land from the Cherokee was that gold had been discovered in the area. Expanding their farming land to grow more cotton was another reason the settlers pressured the government for the Cherokee land. The Cherokee did not want to give up their land

The white settlers wanted the land for their own personal uses such as farming and looking for gold. They had little concern about the people who were already established living on the land. The Cherokee’s goal was simple. They wanted to continue living on their land causing no problem with the white settlers; but they were not willing to give their land to the white settlers. Unfortunately, the Cherokee knew if they wanted to keep their land it would not be worked out
Hundreds of Cherokees were moved from their land by white people for selfish reasons. The Cherokee lived in northern Georgia. The Cherokee were not citizens of the American so they couldn't vote. The didn't have any rights. They had a lot of land and access to the rivers and lakes.
In 1838 and 1839, as part of Andrew’s Jackson’s Indian removal policy, The Cherokee nation was forced to give up its land east of the Mississippi River and to migrate to an area in present-day Oklahoma. The Cherokee people called this journey “The Trail of Tears”, because of its effects. The migrants
However, they faced many hardships such as, treaties going unrecognized and attacks from the Cherokee. When the National Government made a treaty with the Cherokee on where boundaries lied; Settlers were outraged, because some of the lands had already been inhabited by the Settlers. Wars broke out between the Settlers and the Cherokee. Though Franklin could
stood to gain copious amounts of land and in return the American government would sacrifice its honor. The Trail of Tears and the 1830 Indian Removal would be the beginning of a great division that would occur within the U.S. Americans would later watch in disgust WWII would occur speaking to the similarities of the events and the comparisons of leaders. But what remains a fact is the 1830 Indian Removal was nothing short of ethnic cleansing. The loss of thousands of Cherokee people had to be answered for and balanced out according to Cherokee Law.
Robert Lindneux painting, Trail of Tears, depicts this unequal opportunity quite well showing miles of Cherokee Indians traveling along a narrow, treacherous road after being expelled from their ancestral homelands as a part of Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy. These migrants faced hunger, disease, and exhaustion, which eventually killed around 4,000 of the original 15,000 Cherokees. This migration of the Indians was caused by the colonists greed and desire own the Indians fertile and prime land located in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. These colonist’s greed led them to steal Indian livestock; loot and burn their houses and towns; as well as establish property on their land.
Even the soldiers escorting them felt bad for them, but they had to follow orders. Native Americans had long lived in settlements stretching from Georgia to Mississippi. However, President Jackson and other political leaders wanted to open this land to settlement by American farmers. Under pressure from Jackson, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act. Congress then established Indian Territory (land in what is now Oklahoma) and planned to move Native Americans there.
Due to the colonists wanting the best agricultural land possible, the Natives were removed from their homes. The Natives who wanted to protect their land used American law systems in the cases Cherokee Nation v. Georgia and Worcester v. Georgia in an attempt to stop the unjust actions. The supreme court agreed that the native nations were “sovereign nations” and could not be affected by the Georgia laws. Jackson went against this ruling and told the Cherokee Nation to “accept their fate, cede their eastern territory and move west”. The Trail of Tears was an event where seventeen thousand Natives were relocated to the west.
This move, called the Trail of Tears, crushed the Native Americans as well as killing hundreds of them. Even though the Cherokee Indians court rulings did not help them directly, they did help to bring awareness to the fact that Indians need to have rights like the white
The Cherokees in Georgia owned land that they had always owned. The Cherokees were a civilized tribe and tried to do what the government asked when the request was reasonable. Then, gold was discovered on Cherokee land, and Georgian speculators asked the Cherokees to sell their land. Cherokees refused to sell their land because of tribal stuff.
The trail of Tears in 1838 and 1839, as a part of Andrew Jackson’s Indian removal policy, the Cherokee was forced to give up their land that were east of the Mississippi and they were too migrate to present-day Oklahoma. The Trail of Tears began during the 1830’s. The reason the Trail of Tears took place was because of the enforcement of the Treaty of New Echota. The Treaty of New Echota was an agreement that was signed under the provisions of the Indian Removal Act. The Trail of Tears was a big event that happened.
They wanted the land that the Native Americans lived on; they wanted to be prosperous living off the land so they had slaves; they fought with other countries so they could expand their
The trail of Tears was an unethical decision implemented by the government of the United State. The President Jackson used force to push the native American out of their lands. According to www.ushistory.gov, << Over 20,000 Cherokees were forced to march westward along the Trail of Tears. About a quarter of them died along the way>>.
The Cherokee have had this land for a while, since before they could remember. “We have taken care of this land respectfully. It contains the ashes of our father.” They have had the land for a long time, do not think they should just give it up. They respected this land, it contains the burials and ashes of their fathers.
The tribes had lived in cabins and were in different sections. With the introduction of the white man, Cherokee had quickly adopted different ways of life from these people. The search for gold and other resources was the main driver for Cherokee displacement. Of historical note, the movement of the Cherokee people from west to east is known as the Trail of Tears. Many have lost their lives during this journey.
Indians had lived in the same areas for many years and had become much more accustomed to being civilized and had even started schools, making laws and becoming farmers. But all of that didn’t matter, there was increasing pressure to open up the area the Indians inhabited so the white men could settle there. The Indian Removal Act stated that all Indians must move to lands west of the Mississippi River, Jackson said the Indians would receive money for the land they lost and that all expenses would be paid for. The act was supposed to be voluntary but they were pressured to go and the tribes that did not go peacefully were forced. While most tribes did go peacefully the Cherokee Indians wanted to fight the Removal Act and took it to the Supreme
