Transcendentalism In High Schools

Although some might think it is easy to just go drop everything and live in the wild, it is not possible to live a transcendental life in modern day America. Most of the pillars of transcendentalism are not possible because of the media and the illusion of “perfect.” However, a few of the pillars are easy to live out like self-reliance and understanding the importance of nature. In sum, it is nearly impossible to live a transcendental life in modern day America with no strings attached.

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”- Henry David Thoreau. Transcendentalism is an American philosophy that revolves around self-reliance and independence, commonly in nature, a Transcendentalist wants to find the true meaning in life. I believe that Chris McCandless was a Transcendentalist because he was able to leave his whole life behind and take on a minimalist lifestyle while having a strong relationship with god. However, I believe that I am not a Transcendentalist, but simply an adventurer.

Oscar Wilde once said, “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” Wilde’s quote is describing, in whole, the laborious idea of transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is a simple way of living life that promotes reducing the dependence on property, self expression, and the goodness of human and respect for other beauty. Starring in the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless shows many examples of transcendentalism through his simple lifestyle.

Is Transcendentalism a good or bad thing? Everyday in life people come across traits of transcendentalism and don 't even realize it, it can be as easy as looking at the trees or doing something else than what everyone else is doing. These are all examples of transcendentalism and people don 't even realize it. For example my family and I went to San Francisco and went to the Redwoods where respect for nature was so strong because I was amazed at how cool the trees were and how long they have been there.

Good morning students and teachers. I honestly can't believe I've made it through my last year of schooling here at Southern Cross. Throughout my senior English studies, I have realised that individuality is something that is unfortunately lost amongst the trends and expectations of a developing society. Especially in regards to adolescents, I believe that it can be incredibly difficult to maintain a sense of independence and uniqueness in a society where everyone is expected to conform to the majority. Over the last two years, texts such as “The Kite Runner”, Shakespeare's “Othello”, Robert Frost's “Into My Own”, and the film “The Breakfast Club” have definitely inspired me to be myself and to stay true my own beliefs.

In 2006 famous zookeeper and environmentalist Robert Steve Irwin died of a stingray sting while doing what he loved; being with nature. While many mourned his death, he was immortalized for his deep appreciation of nature and his connection with animals. The 2007 film Into the Wild, directed by Sean Penn, details the real life experiences and death of Chris Mccandless and his journey to Alaska. Chris, inspired by the transcendentalist movement, wanted to live and survive with nature alone and so, he did until his untimely death at the hand of food poisoning and starvation. Although many argue that Chris was rash and impulsive, ultimately, Chris Mccandless is a transcendentalist because he lived independently, learned and observed nature, and

Transcendentalists were a movement of this time that had both its ups and downs. In other words failure and successes. When it comes to reform movements the things most people really care about is the success of it and if it made any real change to people during the time period. Transcendentalism had an effect on people of the time that really started something completely unheard of and misunderstood. What transcendentalists did was take what was known and look far beyond it.

A recent study released by Pearson that questioned over 400,000 students in grades 6-12 shows that only “48% of students think their teachers care about them…and only 45% of students think teachers care if they are absent from school” (Hare, 2015). This shocking statistic demonstrates what American students think about their teachers. Most students are under the impression that their teachers don’t care about them. When teachers don’t care about their students and allow them to fail, many students with unrealized potential give up on education. Mike Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average” describes his journey through high school on the vocational track after the results of his “tests got confused with those of another student named Rose” (Rose, 1989, p. 2).

“So many people live in unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation” (57). Chris McCandless was determined to not be one of those men, he strived for a life in solitude, away from the demands of society. For that reason he went on an epic transcendental experience that took him from Mexico to Alaska. Along the way, he met and made an impact on peoples’ lives, people like Wayne Westenberg and Ronald Franz. Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild discusses Chris’s journey, and makes the reader question Chris’s reasons for going out into the wild.

Kevin Sun Mrs. Cohen English 2CP --D February 22, 2018 Another Perspective The film Into the Wild is based on the life of Chris McCandless, a young man who rejected the consumerist society of America in order to live a more simple life. Through his travels, Chris carried essays by Transcendentalist philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, suggesting that McCandless is impacted by Transcendentalist ideals. Two key tenets of Transcendentalism that clearly influenced McCandless’ choices are the value of simplicity and the importance of self-reliance.

Was Chris McCandless a true transcendentalist? Transcendentalism is a system developed by Immanuel Kant, based on the idea that, in order to understand the nature of reality, one must first examine and analyze the reasoning process that governs the nature of experience. Influenced by romanticism, Platonism, and Kantian philosophy, it taught that divinity pervades all nature and humanity, and its members held progressive views on feminism and communal living. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were central figures. In Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild, McCandless is viewed as a transcendentalist.

Dead Poets Society Transcendentalism is about life in which nature and the soul connect. In the movie Dead Poet Society, one of the characters who shows transcendentalism in Neil Perry. In the movie the students quoted poems and had their alone time with nature. They also relied on themselves and sought the spiritual side of things.

“I went into the woods because i wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.” This meant that you live how you want to live and do whatever you want to be free from conformity in your life. This quote by Henry David Thoreau is what the Dead Poets Society and its members lived by everyday. The transcendentalist members always acted differently and disobeyed many so that they could follow in the footsteps of the original Dead Poets Society.

In the 19th and 20th century transcendentalism was a new and exciting topic that caused tremendous controversy. In the novel Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless was a man with a very unique character. In more detailed words Chris McCandless was a transcendentalist. His actions and moods played a big part in his life, from beginning to end. He was a transcendentalist because of his self-reliance, confidence and non-conformity.

I am a firm believer that my classroom should be both Existentialist and Progressive. As stated previously I want my students to be able to express themselves through art. Many high school students go through emotional and life alternating transitions that may cause them to fail, dropout or not believe that they are good enough. From my highschool experience I saw various students feel like they were not good enough to go to college since they did not make the grades they thought they needed. Since they did not believe in themselves it was hard for them to value and try in their classes.
