Mark Mathabane uses the rhetorical triangle which involves ethos, pathos, and logos. The one he tends to use the most is logos because it appeals to logic. Throughout his writing there is credibility based off of his personal experiences that he endured and turned into a positive. For example walking away from getting rape or abuse by those men or even worse. He also used pathos as dealing with the audience emotions and offers solutions to the high school and the readers see’s both points of view in a better perspective.

Sidoonie smith and Julia Watson rhetorical situation, is that “people tell stories of their lives through the cultural scripts available to them”. Another situation is the fact people have a discursive practice of how they control the stories they tell about themselves. Claims made are the fact that people don’t really know that much about themselves when writing an autobiography. For this reason Sidoonie smith and Julia Watson explain to the audience how individuals use the concept of agency to tell stories about themselves and ways to do it. Referring to Michael Mateas’ article, I argue that Gerty is an example of “behavioral interactionist AI” which its different with HAL, Gerty focuses with embodied agents interacting in a physical or virtual world. HAL is an example of “symbolist, classical AI”, which focuses with symbolic manipulation and problem solving. Thus both of these two AL has abilities to accomplish many specific capabilities, such as playing chess, communicate with people, etc. However, HAL its illustrates goal-driven behavior, which leads him to express inner conflicts and tells complicated lies that creates strong contrast with Gerty; Gerty is more emotional about Sam but not trying to achieve his goal. “The Cry of the Restrained” “The world did know and remained silent…I swore never to be silent whenever wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation.” (Wiesel, Elie; “Hope, Despair and Memory”) This quote states, I shall not be silent and will rise up in any crisis to aid those in need; not aiding the oppressor(s). This speech demonstrates Wiesel’s point of view about human suffering and ideas to prevent or lessen the situation. And Wiesel achieves this via the use of third and first person and terminology.

The most effective rhetorical appeal used in the passage was logos and pathos. King used reasoning and experiences to try to persuade the clergymen or ministers, to bring unity and pacifism. In his applauding and jaw dropping letter, he writes from jail, to the ministers about his aspect on racism and segregation. Additionally, King uses allusion to refer to unconventional events in the past, that support his work. For example, in the letter he speaks of Apollo Paul.

Now as I’ve been agreeing with all the test’s results and their meanings behind them, there is something that Ms. Kendra Cherry speaks of that I don’t agree with, and that is some of her career choices for ISFJ people. Now she does gives an examples of some that are good choices such as a bookkeeper, banker, and an accountant, she thinks that some of the best career choices for people with the personality type are social worker, counselor, teacher, etc. The reason why I disagree with her choices is that I feel that her choices don’t go well with people who have the ISFJ type of personality. Knowing what it means to be a ISFJ, you would know by now that people who have this type of personality are kinds of people who wouldn’t fit the mold of

The article written by Caroline Bird “College is a waste of time and money” (1975), in which she addresses that colleges are not made for everyone, and persuade students and parents take a second thought about spending their time and money in tuitions. The author implies that college sells their institution to convince them to prefer them from the other universities. Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.

Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.

The United States is made up of some of the most diverse and interesting cultures in the world. Jamila Lyiscott proves this by showing her different dialects and how they are all equally important. Lyiscott believes that the way she speaks towards her parents, towards her friends, and towards her colleagues are all one in the same.  Throughout the entirety of her speech, Lyiscott changes up her vocal patterns and dialects so that the audience can understand first hand what each of these dialects are. When she talks about her father, Lyiscott uses her native tongue, when she talks to her fellow neighbors and close friends she switches it up to a more urbanized dialect, and when she is in school she masks the other two dialects with a professional sounding language.

Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

For many years, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writing of “Young Goodman Brown” has been used frequently when discussing the topic of a moral allegory. This story is both a literal and metaphorical journey of a man who is walking to a spiritual crisis, with the devil himself. The use of symbolism and imagery help to set the tone for the reader, when going along with Goodman Brown on his “soul-searching” journey. Herman Melville once wrote that Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” has only been improving over time. He said “like wine, was only improving in flavor and body.”

The Rhetorical Analysis Final Essay “It all started with a Sharpie”. Sharpie was launched in 1964 by Sanford Ink Company and it became the first pen-style permanent marker. Throughout Ellis Parker Butler’s essay “On Spelling,” Butler argues that American English spelling conventions of that time period need to be reformed. While most argue for change to more “correct” spelling, Butler believes that reforms should be made in order to omit unneeded letters, such as the “ugh” in although. The argument itself is developed mainly through bombastic and cocky statements, analogies made cross-discipline, and references made comparing the two different “solutions” put forth, one being Serena’s and the other being Butler’s himself. These three techniques combine to form an overall superficial argument with little logical backing.
